After 5 years I've decided to go back to having an Audi again, this time its a 1999 2.8 A4 Quattro Avant. All being well I pick it up on Saturday (thanks to Wayner from this forum offering to take me down there) morning before taking it home for a much needed clean up.

Once I pick it up I'll get some photos up here.

Its currently done 109k so im booking it straight in for a service (nothing in the book since 86k despite Audi telling me it was done at 93.5k).

One downside is that the car only has one key and its not a remote, once I get the car I will check out the option codes to make sure it had remote locking from new but where is the best place to get a new key from?

Cheers

Damo

If your car is a facelift model (1999 - 2001) it'll have remote locking.

You can get the remote keys off ebay, but they'll need to be coded. Your car is also IMMO2, so not sure if you can programme them via VAG-COM.

The remote locking part can be coded pretty easily, it's the transponder coding / programming that's the issue.

Cheers Siena, I dont think mine is a facelift model, its registered Jan 99 but seems to have the older styling (seperate headlight/indicators, wooden dash inserts etc).

I had a search round the forums and found a link for the options'translator' so once I've picked up the car I will check them out before heading to the local Audi dealer to get a price for the key.

you need the SKC code to program the keys yourself.

I think all A4's after 97/98 had remote locking, if the option was deleted then the car was simply sold with normal keys, the pump is still the same.

When my ignition barrel broke it had to got to Audi as it needed new keys, they could match the barrel to my existing keys because it's an import, (tbh, I thought they were all the same - I guess it's more of a software thing as they still can't find it on the UK system), anyway, needed new ignition keys. So now I have 4 keys, 2 for the ignition and two for the remote c/l... I think it all came to about £170 if I remember right. Didn't somebody post a link on here for a compy that did after market remote c/l with lookielikie keys? Had a a quick look, can't find it.

Cheers for all the replies, I've called my local dealer and they have quoted roughly £170 for a new key with remote fob unit which seems to be the norm looking at the replies and other threads.

I think all A4's after 97/98 had remote locking,

For 1998 only SE models had it , as have got a few brochures/spec lists from that date, think it was the same for the '99 pre-facelifts as well.
Not sure about '99 model year facelifts though, but knowing how tight Audi are with options etc I wouldn't mind betting that only SE models had remote (radio frequency as Audi call it,lol) locking too...................

ye, but as far as i know they still fitted the same pump after a certain point, regardless of wether the car had it or not. Ie the pump is capable theres just no fob provided.

Wahay!! Picked her up this morning, after having to get a jump start thanks to someone leaving the lights on I had a nice drive back to Wiltshire from London.

All looks good so far, bodywork is in need of a machine polish but will have to make do with a good hand polish/wax for now till I can get a machine polisher next month. Somehow managed to pick up a screw in one of my tyres on the way home so thats going to have to be replaced on Moonday and the radio is in SAFE mode and it looks like the previous owner has lost the code so it looks as though I will be making a call to the local dealer to see how much they plan on stinging me for the pleasure of getting the code from them.

Whilst digging around I also found what I believe to be the remote pump hidding in behind a panel on the drivers side in the boot so it looks like I just need to get a remote fob and then just get the transponder matched to the car.

All in all a good day though, once I have finished cleaning her I will get some photos put up here.

Cheers for everyones help so far

Damo

They all have that pump in the rear panel, regardless of it being remote capable, or not.

If you get the part number off it, should be able to tell you if its remote capable.

Cheer aragorn, the part number is 8L0 862 257 G

I read somewhere that any with a suffix of B or greater were remote capable, is that correct?

Yup that seems to be the case.

You may need to enable it in vagcom, and then program the new remote fobs, and program the transponder to the immo

To program the Immobiliser transponder, you will need the cars SKC code. This can be extracted using VagTacho, or you can goto the dealer and let them do the lot.

Cool, so all I need to do now is find out what frequency the system is working on so that I can get the correct remote fob, oh and invest in VAGTacho and VAGCom as I plan to keep the car for a while. :)

your 'G' pump is remote capable,
but suffix part isnt true 8L0 'H' pumps were fitted to 97-99 audi's and arent remote c/l
