Well as some of you know I am selling my 140 TDI DSG mainly due to paying too much for my insurance. 20 male live in London, no NCB and less than one year licence so I'm basically****ed :)

Going to start a business so cant splash out every month.

Being male and my age I obviously need power in my life (140 seems like too much but I know its little ) so I need to chose between A3 1.6 or if its too underpowered, might just get an A2 with IG 4 :)

Any recommendations ? maybe something else ?

PS ive reduced my add price to 6995 but will sell for anything above 6k
:sob:

If your thinking vag - Id be tempted into a golf 1.9 tdi mk5 or even the mk4!

or how about a mini - 03 for about 4-5k - it would probs be a cooper and not a S though as they're irsurance group 15.

How much were you paying for insurance and who with if you dont mind me asking!

Cheers

Have you got an insurance quote on an A3 1.6? Is it really that much cheaper than the TDI 140?

If you're trying to save cash, then as unpleasant as they are, the A2 might be worth running around in for a while,

The problem is that anything nice with a bit of poke wil be pricey to insure.
TBH as long as Ive got male reproductive organs I wouldnt have an A2.
Dont take this the wrong way, but it almost smacks a bit of desperation to keep an AUDI badge outside the house.
Is it not an option to forget AUDI for a year or 2 until your business venture takes off and go for a more VFM car in the meantime?

What about a modern classic? No real depreciation (may even appreciate), and even consider 3rd party insurance on a cheaper car?

Guy at work has just bough a stunning, restored 205GTi for 3.5K and will get at least that back in 12-24months.
What about a nice restored MK2 Golf Gti?, cool, reliable, desirable.

This way you can offset the running costs against zero depreciation, although maintenance may be higher.

Good luck
Paul

The Audi A2 is widely regarded as a complete sack of ****. A 1.6 A3 will be crap aswell. Think you need to be looking at non premium badge cars, you'll get more for your money that way

When I was your age, with the same insurance credentials as you, I got myself a gen 1 hyundai coupe 2.0 16v. Cheap as chips to insure, looks cool, is quick and very reliable. But it all depends on how much of a badge snob you are really?

Personally I would not bother with an A2 or a 1.6 A3.
If I had 6k to spend on something which is cheap to insure but still desirable I would go for a hyundai coupe or a mini cooper.

Good luck!

P.S where is your car advertised? Have you got a link?

A!

My mum had two audi a2 and the second was a tdi 90 bhp and it was fairly nippy round town. Couple with that she averaged 74 mpg and she hardly hold back when driving then its a fantastic town car if you can get past the image. The insurance was low too. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what people think about the car you have aslong as it does the job for you. As far as I remember its only top gear that didn't like it and they said it was overpriced.

The technology was actually very far ahead and its only now when fuel prices have risen massivly that people realise what it was all about. The tax was only £35 too!

Don't be totally put off m8 just try one and see how it feels to be driving it, they are well made inside.

Depends what young guys want these days.

"When aah`were a lad"

`bang for buck` was my priority, couldnt care less about the badge.

Same here! When I was 20 (10 years ago now lol) all I wanted was the fastest car I could get for less than 500 quid and insurance preferably under a grand :yahoo: My weapon of choice back then were a Lhasa green Scirocco GTX, bit of a shed with water in the headlights, scabs all over it and a swimming pool in the footwell...I didn't care though because I thought it looked cool (rat-look before they invented it), was faster than most of my mates' cars, and I could out-corner everyone except my dad :lmfao:

I dunno, young people these days...:faint:

about 5 years ago i had a mk2 golf gti 16v - was quick but handling was terrible - and was a total rip off to insure - over 1k 3rd party....

the inevitable happened and i wrote it off (a court hearing, 6 points and 400pound fine later)

got a 1.6 mitsubishi colt (3 door) M reg
then a drunk driver wrote that off while it was parked up
astra 1.8 M reg (800 pounds..)

then 172 silver - 53 reg - wrote that off on the way to work - trying to charge my **** mobile phone, was crawling in 2nd gear - looked down for a second then went straght into the car infront lol!!

insurance pay out was pretty good so then got
172 cup - which i still have but am now looking to get something more comfortable (and with my past history of writing cars off - probably best i dont get something quite as quick)

hopefully the A3 tdi 2.0 dsg S-line (if i can find one for 12k with reasonable mileage) will bring me more luck

Those RenaultSport cars (Clio/Megane) are great `bang for buck` these days.

This is the sort of thing I would be looking at.
Take a shafting on the insurance but get a lot of car for the money.
Balances out really.:)

I ran a couple of Reno5 GT Turbos when i was younger and there were brilliant, flimsy, cheap looking, lacked anything premium, but still brilliant in an old school, fast n flimsy fashion.

ive had a 1.6 07 a3 what ever you do dont get one there so slow aswell you go over 70 80 the engine is screaming its ar*e off and the engine drinks petrol as there only 5 speed the 1.6 really needs 6 gears its an awefull car you be better with a 1.4 turbo

Get a Lupo Sport TDI. £35 tax, cheap to insure and can be mapped to 115bhp with 70mpg!

They are also very cool! :)

I'd rather a 1.6 a3 over an a2. 6months after i passed my test i got a 1.6 a3 which is still on my driving doing nothing since i got my newer car. My insurance on the 1.6 was £980 fully comp. There not bad out of a full tank depending how you drive i'd get 450-500miles. And i dont really drive slow or like a idiot. Obivously not as fast or as good as a 2.0tdi. But for a 1.6 not bad at all. If i had to pick through any car with £6,000 i probably would get another a3 1.6. Not the fastest car and you and me are around the same age group im 19 in may so i know how you feel lol. As when i picked up my 2.0tfsi had the biggest smile on my face :) and a BIGGER grin when i put my foot down. But think you can always get a better car in a year or 2? My 2.0T fsi will be going soon probably as i need the money for a place to live. And rather not be tight for money. So i'll probably end up having my 1.6 a3 back if my mum doesn't mind.

If you do have a 1.6 a3 get the 1.6 fsi as they have 6 gears.
But you probably only picked the 1.6 a3 or a2 because you like audi. Like every one has said tried any other brand of car? or a 1.4 tfsi there not bad at all :)
Hope this helps but probably dont so sorry lol...Just go with what ever you like :)

What about Skoda Fabia VRs??? Their pretty nippy and can be remapped into a pocket rocket whilst being cheap to run! Or maybe a Polo 1.9 TDi 100 or 130. Can also have a look at a Seat Ibiza TDi as well.

Wooow this must be the busiest thread ive ever started, Thanks everyone.

Currently I’m with direct line (saving NCB) as a named driver and paying about 2k a year which is too much right now but i really do want something nippy.

I noticed a lot of you said to get some pretty fast cars but even a Skoda Fabia VRs is IG 9 ... and my a3 being 11 so is there really a difference?

Usually I look for the insurance group when I’m choosing or am I missing something ?

When I was your age, with the same insurance credentials as you, I got myself a gen 1 hyundai coupe 2.0 16v. Cheap as chips to insure, looks cool, is quick and very reliable.

Cheap as chips? ....Can it really be any cheaper? It’s a rocket!!!:wacko:

Can’t wait till I get my 2.0 TFSI my TDI is the fastest thing I’ve driven :arco:

PS I will post a link to my add when I’ve redone them tomorrow with 6995

Thanks for the input once again

You're 20 and in London. Insurance on anything nippy is going to be expensive. Insurance group 11 isn't all that high, so you're either going to save very little, or have to buy a shitter!

The hyundai used to cost me about £700 when I was 20 with 0 NCB. I did not live in London tho, so that may have something to do with it.

Over the years I have noticed that insurance groups are not a good guide to insurance cost. I have drive sporty cars ever since I was 18 tbh and never paid over £800 on insurance. You just need to find the niche in the market.

For example I had a mazda mx-6 gt 2.5v6i manual. It was the pretty much the same car as the ford probe (neither very good cars tbh) but the probe would cost about £1400 to insure and the mazda was around £800.

Mini one D is a fair choice as it will be fun to drive and once re-mapped it will be fairly nippy I suspect.

Have you thought about a Fiesta Zetec S tdci?

Well i was about to buy a peugeot 1007 (crazy I know) but it had only done 1k and was a 1.6 110 BHP at insurance G 5 ...

... when the dealer took the **** and offered me 4K for mine :)

Still kind of like the little 1007, HUGE space inside and sliding doors are great for carparks near me
