What Tyres??

Hi All

I have a 2005 (B7) A4 Avant S-Line 2.0TDI and I am needing to get two new tyres.
Does anyone know what the original make of tyres were on the car??
Or any recommendations welcome.
Tyre size - 235/40/ZR18 91Y

You know what, I've had number of economy tyres over the years with rep alloys & only one set of decent expensive road tyres, you know that I've only had issues with one tyre out of them all, it was the expensive one that blew for no reason, Goodyear Dunlop, completely no tyre damage so no reason it blew, also there customer service is absolutely *****, they can regulate themselves & even though they clearly said the tyre had no road damage so no reason to blow they still didnt refund anything of the tyre given it wasnt anything I'd done, ****** typical large companies are tight fisted ******* who dont care about the small man on the street

I'd consider cheaper ones these days as no real difference overall for me & thats after having best & midrange & from many manufacturers after about 6 new sets of wheels for different cars, only one was crap & that was as above, just goes to show not always the most expensive is the best product huh

I'll never buy anything from that company ever again

i totally agree with NHN, the economy ones now are all made to a better standard now and a few are owned by the bigger names anyway.
i run middle of the road khumos and have no probs at all.

suppose it depends how you drive aswell, if you want softer gripier ones.

Last weeks tyre test in Autocar made interesting reading...

In a braking test from 60mph at the point where a Golf fitted with Continental tyres stopped the same car fitted with cheap Chinese tyres was still doing 30mph.

Save £20 per tyre, and either gain £1000 worth of damage as you hit the car in front that suddenly stopped, or hit the child that ran into the road at much higher speed...

Sorry guys, really cheap tyres are a bad deal, but I do agree that premium brands do probably over charge and Falken , Vredestein etc are probably a better deal than Pirelli, Michelin, etc.

Tbh if my incident is anything to go by I'll stick to my current economy ones, they stop very well & had some close shaves to which they did there job very well indeed & I cant see difference between these & the utterly ***** Goodyears overall except for the exhuberant prices, I'd like to think we're seeing a turn around in fortunes for some of these overrated product companies to teach them a lesson or 2 about selling high priced crap.

Hmm..Im in the same position..need 4 new boots..currently got Dunlop SP Sport Maxx fitted..235/40/ZR18 95Y (Extra Load).

Personally never had much faith in cheapo brands, always ran either Michellin, Dunlop or Pirelli in all my other cars..looking for opinions on higher end tyres such as new Dunlop, Goodyear, Conti or Bridgestone..any other users running these at the moment ?

I'm on Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics at the moment and rate them highly, I wouldn't touch the Pirelli PZero Rossos that were OE fit and the Michelin PS2s are a real rip-off.

In the past I've really liked Yokohama's.

I would not touch budget tryes - in the end it the tyre that joins you to the road so why would you compromise & risk your own neck as well as that of your passengers?? Sadly I only got £10K from the factory fit Conti's on the front...........switched to Bridgestone RE050's now so we'll see how they go. I believe (from other threads and other forum) that the A4 is known to be hard on the tyres, especially the Quattro :-(

I'm on those tyre's too - and have recently been inquiring about prices.

The dealer top me that it was imperative that I used Extra Load tyres on my A4 - and that many insurers now insisted on them.

I've been a big fan of Toyo Proxes T1-R bit on my last car swapped to Continental Sport Contact 2 - which were stunning tyre's but very expensive.

The Extra Load bit seriously reduces options - but it looks to me like I'll be trying the VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA's

I've been quoted £135 a corner for these - which is the same as the Dunlops.

I do not know if it counts, but I would go for the Eco ones from Michelin from Costco !

Have just fitted four Bridgestone RE050 potenzas 225/45/17 91y to my quattro. Only had them on two weeks and seem great so far. Luckily they went on day before snow hit the south as the slicks I was running would have been useful.

I know they are the wrong size but point I wanted to make was shop around, list price on etyres and blackcircles was around £115 each, but kwikfit had a january sale with 4 for price of 3 which bought cost down to £84ish each. So 4 premium tyres for budget price.

I trawled through loads of reviews and the RE050 were a good balance of grip in all weathers and wear rate, I don't drive like a loon so all out grip wasn't needed. They look good too and have a nice lip to protect the rim from kerbs if you aren't careful. Main thing to note was quattro needed extra load rating, 91, which affected prices some sites offered.

I had eagle F1s on my S-line 2006 TDI and they all feathered up and ended up replacing them. The audi tech said they were like a 50 pence piece.

I'm now using Continental Sport Contact 2 as recommended by Audi. They said not to use Eagle F1s because of the pattern type isn't any good with multi link rear ends.

BTW what PSI should we be using on 235/40/18 on the s-lines ? I'm running 36psi

Well, I visited all the various high street "names", and a few local indy tyre specialists, and was quoted £150 for Michy PS2..good price..£140 for Goodyear F1, £130 for Vredstein, and £140 for Dunlop as fitted already. Managed to haggle a fair bit, and in the end got 4 new Dunlop SportMaxx fitted for just under £108 per corner. Result !!

Hi Sorry to jump into this post. But are Bridgestone RE050 potenzasextra load? I am guessing these are tyres that Audi Orignally but on the cars as they are quite common. But are they extra load?

Also what are ppls views on Avon ZZ3s? The stealer replaced the rears with these on my s-line..?

That's a load of bullsh..

Several RS4 owners are running Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics and rate them very highly for grip, feel, noise, etc. Wear? I've had a set on for 8k miles and they're less than half worn - for comparison a set of Pirelli Pzeroo Rossos lasted 9k miles and a set of Michelin PilotSport2's lasted 13k miles.
