Hi,

I'm looking at upgrading from single din CD player to Navigation Plus.

To keep it looking tidy I'm going to purchase the double din climate control unit rather than trim down my single din unit.

Can anybody help me by identifying which of the units for sale on ebay is from a double din setup? I want to make sure I purchase the correct one!

Thanks in advance.

Pete

I just sold my spare one!

I do have a spare single din one though... You could cut that one down and therefore not have the issue of damage to yours.

I have just done the single to double din conversion and i would say its well worth it.

Cheers :)

p.m. me if your interested :)

Thanks for the reply - I appreciate the offer, but I'm keen to fit a double din unit and keep the install as factory as possible. I've found a unit on ebay but £90 seems a bit steep...

I had the RNS-E in my old A4 so keen to get into my A3 pretty soon.

V6 pete out of curiosity... do you plan to fit the unit yourself? I am looking into the retrofit and seems a little tricky to a DIY noob like myself. I emailed a company that specializes in the single din> double din conversions but haven't had a quote back as of yet.

Secondly I have seen the sawn down climate control unit on a guys car that done the retrofit himself and it was unnoticable to me, what are the differences to teh double din apart from losing some storage space?

Cheers

As said before I have just done the conversion and it was strightforward. Not like you need any special tools or anything can really go wrong.

The guides that are about show you each screw that needs replacing so its a fairly easy task.

And yes i think a oem finish can be made on the heater controls.

I did think about fitting myself, but was quoted £180 from Hazzy Days which I thought was very reasonable for labour, coding etc.

I tend to break stuff very easily when taking cars apart so would rather part with some cash and know its going to be done properly!

I still may go down the trim route, but if I can pick up the double din unit, and then sell mine, maybe losing £30-40 this doesn't seem like a lot of cash compared to the overall cost of the conversion.

Well let me know mate. Could sort summit with that exhaust!

I bought my cables for the RNS-E off Gareth at Hazzy Days and was really impressed with the service!

Always up for a deal, but if I'm going to trim, it will be to my existing unit - I won't be looking to swap the car back to single din, so I have no use in keeping a spare unit. Gareth offered to trim down my single din unit as part of the install, but still more inclined to buy a double din version then just sell mine when it's all been swapped over.

Good to hear positive things about Hazzy Days, it seems like a good service they offer, and whilst not a giveaway, prices all seem very reasonable, especially for a mobile service.

Yes i couldn't beleive how far he would travel for the money! Decided to do it myself in the end though! (tight northerner!)

I'm tight as well, but have decided it's false economy for me to fit stuff, as putting right my damage usually ends up costing more...

This is true! But i think you would be ok really not like anything will be rusted or damaged in there!

Hmmm, I hear you, but trust me, I shouldn't be let anywhere near a car with a tool kit.

I cut mine down to fit. Took longer than it should have as I was paranoid about taking off too much. Looks perfect though, besides it sits in a bit anyhow so you could get away with it being less than perfect.

I don't suppose you have any pics do you? If mine can be hacked down and look right, then I might just do this.

Just need to buy myself a double din cage and buttons and I'm nearly there....

Well I have an RNS-E, DD, 08 dvd's, antenna, new style buttons, trim & coin tray, rns-e has the new style genuine alum knobs I fitted if anyone's interested.

Very interested, as I need to purchase all that lot still! Let me know what you're after for them.

lmao! sounds like my good self V6pete  Plus I don't have the equipment to saw the unit down. I'll do a search for Hazzy Days... Sounds like a half decent price. Let us know how you get on with it. I think I'll do my s line/ s3 conversion first. I'm a sucka for looks!! But the RNS-E is next on my list (after I respray roofrails, fit matt chrome mirrors that is :) )
