Hi guys,

I've finaly managed to install my RNS-E into my A3. I had the single din so needed to swap the cage and trim down the air con unit. 4 hours work and I'm really pleased with the result.

I currently have software version 0500 and hardware version H72

Should I upgrade this ?

If so how easy is it and what benifits will I see ?

Also - Apart from the newer roads what else is on the newer maps ? Are the POIs updated ?

Cheers :)

the latest map disk includes firmware updates - -latest 2008 disk includes 650 software.

all you do is insert the map dvd, and the firmware updates itself then reboots the rns-e

precious little in terms of functionality but obviously newer maps and poi's may be updated but ive never found any - even my local audi garage that moved 2 years ago is still in its old place on the current map.....

You cant update the HW version. 0650 is on the latest map DVD. Or if you only want the lastest SW you can download just the SW. The new (2009) DVD should be out in nov/dec which will have a newer version on it.

0650 doesnt add much, it fixes a minor bug in the MP3 playback mix option, and allows the AUX-IN functionality to be added should you wish to have this option.

I've just got the 2009 DVD (8P0 919 884 AD) and the SW is still version 0650, only the maps are newer.

Where can you download the software? Do Audi offer this as a download facility now? Or do I need to trawl the web...?

Cheers
Paul

Personally I wouldnt bother updating the software, it makes very little difference.

Audi dont offer any facility for downloads. Search the usual Torrent sites etc. I might have a copy of 0650 somewhere if thats what your after?

Sorry for going off topic but how hard was it to go from Single Din to fitting this unit??

Im looking at buying an A3 and the one im interested in is Single DIN but i want to fit this unit after.

Yes, 0650. But, if it doesn't make a lot of difference, maybe it's worth me leaving it. I guess they automatically update these things at a service?

Cheers

theres a couple guides about what i've been looking into (thinking of fitting rns-e myself too)

thats a good link to a retrofit guide

Unless your desperate I would not bother with the recent 2009 DVD disc as there will be a 2009-2010 DVD disc out around Nov-Dec, this will have software & firmware updates. Only problem, if you have had the SDS hack you will have to have it redun

Don't forget the 09 disc has updated maps, so you may no longer find yourself driving in a field!

How do you know there will be a software update next year?

I think RNS-E development has slowed, if not stopped altogether.

Info came from Gareth at Hazzy Dayz, who by the way will sell you a copy of the 2009 DVD for £40 + pp.
Email:- HazzyDayz Ltd [hazzydayz@gmail.com]

You can download it for free!

I wonder where his info is from? As next years DVD is at least 6 months away!

He is an X Audi man so I presume he still has contacts.

Basically I want to upgrade the SW version from 0110 to latest 0650
but I'm concerned as to if my Current DVD 2005-2006 will work with that SW version...
I certainly don't want to disable my Nav just cuz of a SW upgrade!
Also.. if Downgrading is an option.

Thanks.

Hi, how do you upgrade the software version on the rns-e?? The software version screen on my unit does not show which version i have, how do i find out??
Cheers

I have a genuine set of both dvd's 1 & 2 boxed for sale that will upgrade firmware to 650 & they're 2008 DVD's, the 09 dvd's dont update the firmware as there isnt an update, just maybe some mapping updates

I got a 2008 map dvd with the unit, is this what upgrades the software aswell??

Yeah you just insert the dvd & it will auto update if it sees its an old firmware, you have to wait about 10 minutes while it updates so dont think its not working, it will restart the unit when update finished, but just go into Car & select version, this will show you current firmware version.

For some reason in my version screen it just says " SW VERSION" then its blank. Am i doing something wrong?

I downloaded the 0600 update from rapidshare I extracted and
burned the SDS folder on Root Level, along with the 5 files from the 'Dateien' folder into a DVD

I currently have SW: 0110

When I put the disc in the RNS-E I see it as SOFTWARE UPDATE CD/DVD 0600 BUT it sits there and does not start the update.

Something amiss? or am I being impatient?

There is little point in a pure S/W upgrade - very very little changes. You'd be better off getting a 2008/9 map DVD to be honest.

If you insist on it though...have you burned the files in a closed session on the CD? (doesnt have to be a DVD)

If your doing it, you might as well go to 0650 as thats the latest version.
