guess its that time on a Friday night LOL. I have been on this forum for a good many years and have met Glen too on several occasions. He is a 'spirited' driver and as a result I'm sure he will wear out components rather quickly, track days or not track days. If nothing else he is objective. When he states something it's less of opinion and closer to factual. He did a lot of work on his 8L at his expense that is still of use to those on that forum, debunking a lot of popular myths.

Part of the problem is where the balance of your driving skill lies and what you want out of your car. Our opinions of a car is very subjective. I'm very happy with my N/A Fsi, half this forum would get into my car and complain its all over the road. As regards to feel and feedback, best car I have ever driven would then be my MK1 golf that was make in 1982! Apart from Bowf, we are all agreed that it's horses for courses. If you want something fast and special, there are other options than the S3, but the S3 does things that the more 'driver' orientated cars cant.

Test drive a car and when you find one you like, buy it. Simple as that.

Someone else on this forum has summed up the s3 perfectly for me, I cant remember who said it, or what was said exactly, but it went along the longs of "the s3 doesnt have much depth". I think thats about right, it very easy to drive fast, and its no challenge, and I think thats why I dont find it interesting.

But it still does 90% of what I need, so I'll keep it for a good few years (unless I come into a lot of money) as a tool to do a job.

Would my response have any more credability if I typed it wearing amankini?
(you think I kidding)

Bit of a latecomer to this comedy thread but got to ask:
In the poll options, what's the difference between "dull" and "boring" ?

dull we can all drive it (inc our grannys), boring even the chavs can get it round a corner without loosing the backend? Bottom line, we can all argue to the ends of time but hey, if you like your car u drive it, if not sell it n drive something you do enjoy.

Elvis has left the building, goodnight LOL

Good question. I was thinking the same but felt like a twit to ask! But since you asked 1st, I dont feel so bad

C'mon guys, this S3 thread has been torn and stretched out of context. Im sure we're all adult enough to logically deduce the differences that an S3 has on offer. It'll suit some of us perfectly, some of us just fine and others will hate it. If it's the right vehicle for you at the right time - nuts to everyone else.

I know it's not cheap and may well be your personal 'pride and joy'. For most people, it'll probably be the largest single purchase (except from property). It's just a car, and this is just a forum. Opinions are bound to conflict, so dont take it literally to heart!

The S3 is a damn good car - efficient hits the nail on the head.
But thrilling to drive?
Next to what?
A Proton?

Being malaysian myself, I've driven many protons, and lemme tell you there are some pretty "fun" ones. 400bhp FWD tin can anyone?

Of course, cars here do not have to go through MOT testings, so you'd find all sorts of "questionable" modifications:ninja:

I've opted for the 'Good Allrounder' option.

It's a very capable car but it does not have the levels of interaction, the great engine noise, quick precise steering, the drama or emotional attachment that my 147GTA had.

Don't get me wrong, on pretty much any road the S3 would leave the GTA for dead but the GTA driver would be having much more fun trying to keep up (probably have their eyeballs out on stalks too!)

He He, did I really type this?

The perils of Lager and Red wine......(goes off for paracetomol)

I love mine, ticks all the boxes and I still go out to buy a pint of milk and end up being gone for an hour or two. My commute is about 2miles each way but i'm still doing 1k miles a month just because I love driving it. I don't like it just because of the money i spent on it, if it was ***** that would **** me off and I'd tell you about it

I've not added to the poll as IMHO the S3 fits many of the boxes, so based on the above scenerios I will add my two peneth and explain accordingly.

I would consider the S3:
1) Dull - A bit misleading and not meant as a bad thing but based on the above anyone can drive an S3 which arguably makes it a good all rounder.
2) Boring - Only in the sense of the above definition as I'd expect anyone with reasonable driving experience to be able to drive an S3 spirited around bends.
3) Fun - Obviously not to every ones taste but it has put a smile on my face on many an occasion.
4) Good all rounder - Nice to be able to drive accross Europe to the 'Ring' with effortless cruising at high speed, overtaking is a doddle, get out at the end with no aches and pains then do a few laps round the 'Ring'. I'd be the first to admit many other cars do the 'Ring' much better than an S3 but were talking "good all rounder".
5) Enjoy every minute of driving it - Err, yes.

Now as much as I fancy buying a Cayman S (put down them rocks please) that does not detract that I consider the S3 a very good car. I suppose it's all down to circumstances and what rocks your boat at the time. Lets face it, is there an ideal car that does it all ...... dunno?

Also, if i thought the S3 was ***** i'd have no problem saying so. Just seems sometimes purely for the fact of owning an S3 it becomes a problem to some and subsequent derogatory remarks become more frequent. S3 owners, do we consider ourselves above the rest in our ivory towers looking down on all other A3's as inferior ........ not at all, just enthusiats on a web site.

good fast point to pont car which has a good image and a quality feel.

Does take some of the driver input away and can see what people mean by dull when you compare the to an m3/335i and the likes.

Having said that there arent many cars in its class, hot hatches eg ctr,r26,vxr and st arent quite in the same field.

Well considering they list just under 27k before adding a few extras they wont be far off 30k list. Did you buy your second hand if it cost much less.
Did someone on here not spend 34k on the S3 which was talked about elsewhere whichis a fair amount for an A3 but is there perogative at the end of the day.

no 25k for a new facelift 8P 3 door with a small number of extras like BOSE, folding mirrors, USB connection. The facewlift spec is higher now anyway FBMFSW, armrest etc.

who pays list?

You post a pic of that...and your response will be set in stone. Can't get much more credible than that.

Now...about this Mankini?

Paul's been outed

I'm assuming your reference is aimed at me, regarding the 'over used 8L' ... car that did 13,500 road miles in 3 1/2 years, so hardly over used.

It's very difficult to criticise a car you've just spent £28k+ on...sadly, the line between finding it difficult to criticise and being blinkered is a fine one.
One many seem to be unable to cross.

I'm pleased they are happy with their car...but that doesn't meen it's perfect for everyone.

'Over-used' as in half the thread is quoting and re-quoting the above information over and over again about your 8L as a reason for not getting an 8P. How is that helpful to the threads OP?

If you read the 'used S3' thread you will see that the majority of owners are fully aware there are many better cars out there and give a warts and all view of what the S3 offers.

Nicely put Kris :salute:

& not 1 single laugh at the mankini, I mean its got a bit serious this forum now, lol

So Jamie of subject what was the story of the S3-Talk shut down cause from what I can gather the owner was being a :shutup2: or maybe you'd like to correct me if wrong.

The mankini... I had to turn away... it was just wrooooooooooong!

RE: s3-talk don't know what to say to be honest.
It all flared up around advertising & a clash of interests from the people who set it all up and as a result both s3-talk and tt-talk were going to close.
tt-talk has had a second chance, but s3-talk sadly didn't survive. I was gutted tbh as a few of us had put a lot of effort only to have it all pulled from under our feet!
Still, never one to be defeated and finding the silver lining, the peeps who made s3-talk what it was are now working on www.vagoc.co.uk we've only had a couple of days to get things running but we're getting there and thankfully all the people involved are on the same page with this one.

Yes i know no idiot pays list its just a run of the mill car nothing special.:ermm:

It's got a not bad spec as standard compared to most audis...

If you read the 'used S3' thread you will see that the majority of owners are fully aware there are many better cars out there and give a warts and all view of what the S3 offers.

And if you bothered engaging your brain before typing, you'd understand that 8L and 8P are similar weights, similar performance (to a remapped 8L), using a very similar drive method, so the amount of tyre wear and brake wear will be similar, based on the same driver.
It doesn't take a genius to work that out.

Maybe the OP likes to drive hard...if so, then he should be aware of how expensive quattro cars can be if running high torque and you are making the chassis work.

And, just so you understand:
I am not saying I wouldn't buy a 8P S3. I would, and at some point may well (I have already stated - which you seem to choose to ignore - that my S3 was the best car I've ever owned)...but I am capable of accepting it's nowhere near as good as some seem to think.

The 8P is a fine car. But dynamically pretty bland, in my view...which last time I lookek, I was entitled to.

The point I'm making is that an S3 is a great all-rounder...but if you drive it close to the edge of it's handling limit...it wears stuff out, and fast.
Sadly, that's the same of ANY (mainstream) VAG car.

I'm drawing on a lot of previous experience with VAG cars (and please...don't try to tell me the S3 is different...it isn't)
I am hard on cars. They are mine and I'll break them if I want!

But suspension bushes, dampers, brakes, tyres etc I go through...along with 2nd-3rd gear synchros (yes, my S3's was past it's best too...along with 2x Golf GTI gearboxes).
VAG cars are heavy cars...so if you drive hard - and I mean throw them about on back roads, you wear stuff out.
I don't mind wearing stuff out.
I have never complained at the cost of replacing my S3's consumables...merely surprised it need so much, so early.
I never needed a wheel bearing though...
Even on my 12 year old GTI golf I've never needed a wheel bearing. Odd!

I moan about breaking gearboxes as it's expensive to repair and takes a while...but tyres, brakes etc...no issues. Just surprise at quite how much.

This wear, for me, is limited to VAG cars...my ITR didn't, my 911 doesn't.

The 8P S3 is a huge step up from the 8L...the Mk5 Golf is a huge step up from the Mk4 etc...better dynamically.
But, drawing on my experiences and those of friends who run fast Audis (including RS4/6s) the damn things have a fine appetite for brakes, tyres and suspension bushes that doesn't add up - when driven in a style like I have, and on roads that are franky, crap.

I fully except that these wear issaues my not be relevant to all...but they are for me.
Would it stop me buying one? No.
But I'd like to be aware of how much it *can* cost if you are hard on them.

Enough already!
I was worried about your taste in hosted pictures with the Elephant ***** pic...but this?
It's wrong on so many levels.
Seek help. Seriously...you need help! :moa:

Its you're fault numnuts, lol, you ****** well said if you could see it, so ok feck knows if it resembles Paul but it'll do, lmao, & that point of needing help went when I was born as I hazard a guess aload of us on here, lol

Well, I woke up this morning and it appears I hade sent Mankini portraits to my mates via picture messages.

Twats.

Come now...no need for the denial.

I like what you've done with the Bad Taste Bear. Nice touch.

What was the thread about again?

I have no idea...
Something about who drives their S3 wearing a Mankini?

lmfao, love it, lmfao, now to find that picture, lol

I know Paul, thats why I used a much thinner man this time, confidence boosting, lmfao

Ahh...I see a problem
A man with such bad hair would never be seen in a TT...in his line of work, surely someone at the Salon would have tidied him up, no?

My mate in the IOM has a TT quattro, was fun blast round the winding roads there... he is totally bald so dunno how that affects the hairdressing situation :)

Ah so thats who the bald headed mankini was, lol

You mean like one of those dogs that looks like one big wrinkle, lmao
