aspiring to be a 911?

That's like saying an S3 is aspiring to be an RS4.
What's good for the goose, etc.
Honestly. can't you see the irony of your comment there?

People snidely looking at a Cayman saying "pretend 911"
Why?
Because it's made by the same people and shares the same sort of layout?
That's not at all like an S3/RS4, is it.
No, that would mean they'd both need to be made by Audi, both have front engines, both have 4WD and both look 'sort of' the same from some angles.
Oh, hang on....:p

im_lovin_it_NEW_logo2.jpg

I love it when I'm driving it because I'm lucky enough to have other spare cars at home to tackle situations where I might not like the S3, i.e. grocery shopping, moving people about, fetching pets, going to dinner, driving on bad roads, traffic congestion...

I drive it when I want to feel like a young **** in a hot-ish hatchback or while picking up easily impressionable school girls who go "oooOOOoohhhhhhhh" when you tell them that's not an A3.

oh and Jamie, where the hell have you been?

Someon said my S3 was a cr@p car so I had to go to rehab for a while.
Just kdding.
I got kicked out during one of the server changes - was hoping they would find my details and match me back to my posts, but it's not proved very possible so far.
R88PER told me to stom been stubborn and sign back up ;)

I read about your car mate - shocking news, but at least it's getting sorted and proven the differene your map makes :)

You not fancy getting over to Santa Pod on Sunday mate?

by the same layout you mean one is mid engine rear wheel drive and the other is rear engine, rear wheel drive? :jester:

Funny, it's a mate of mine who's been doing the server changes...he doesn't come on here because he doesn't have an Audi so I email him when the server's down and he restarts it...

I'll ask him about your posts etc.

Could potentially make Santa Pod...haven't really considered it. I'll see if fat Sam's up for it... (yes i know he's not fat but it's a funny name).

So we should comparing 911s with the evergreen VW Beetle then?

Just kidding of course, Im sure I could make some space for a 911 on my drive......

Hahaha - awesome - if he can patch me back to my old posts I'll be VERY happy!

Hopefully see you Sunday -I have your number from the Regal rolling road day

Come down to the pod Magnus, would be cool to put a face to the name.

And you too Paul?

well have they not both got a wheel in each corner? similar layout

i am currently looking for a pack of 'top trumps supercars' for bowfer on ebay.

Would love too mate, but its a fair old hike down to the Pod from Newcastle.

Anyway, I will be at the Newcastle v Sunderland game on Sunday, (and probably drowning my sorrows straight after)

Was up for the Croft meet last year but unfortunately didnt come off.
Maybe next time?

cheers

See if you can get a diagram of a proper circuit with corners for the Santa-pod boys as well, there's a good lad.

nil desperandum, I'll get on it immediately.

i think they prefer it without too many corners, as the keep getting 'done on the brakes' by 2.7 caymans on technical cricuits.

we cant have that can we? not when they have spent 30k on their 'golfs on steroids'

Where did all the corners go

Well, I'll be looking forward to catching up with some like minded people.
this thread is dead :end_of_discction:

I voted for the boring option. Its fast but boring.

edited to add: I also think its a good allrounder, but its still boring.

mine wasnt even near 30k

what you often find is that disgruntled buyers usually make the most noise about something they own

especially if their car has stupid high running costs (like the over used 8L example on the other thread)

the motoring press hate the S3 but cant seem to give a valid reason why. most owners I know love them.

Well considering they list just under 27k before adding a few extras they wont be far off 30k list. Did you buy your second hand if it cost much less.
Did someone on here not spend 34k on the S3 which was talked about elsewhere whichis a fair amount for an A3 but is there perogative at the end of the day.

This is a good point, I guess you can get a leggy low spec S3 for 18K but can still spend way over 30K for a specced up facelift, yet both both will drive pretty much the same.

Does that mean one is `worth it` and the other not?

In fact, it means you can have all that ability for half the price of a Cayman? (Note: ability, not fun)

I suppose this is a `pound for pound` VFM debate which is even more off topic......

cheers
Paul

done... and done!

Love it... fricking awesome... even when I am sat in traffic... but I wish I knew what my ipod was playing! ;)

I have to own up for the 'OK' option. But that isnt taking any praise away from the S3. (in case anyone is puzzled by my rather tame response, I have an 8P S3)

I have to agree with other people describing the S3 as 'clinical' - maybe too clinical at times. It's fairly practical (in sportback guise), fairly quick (even in standard form), fairly economical with subtle sporty styling and reliable. IMO, the S3 does a lot of things very competently and ticks most boxes BUT I wouldnt say it excelled in any department. So one could argue it's kind of a 'jack of all trades'.

True,
There are cheaper cars than the S3
There are faster cars available than the S3
There are engines and exhausts that sound better than the S3 (V6, V8 etc...)
There are more economical cars than the S3 (diesel)
There are more practical cars than the S3
There are more involving cars to drive than the S3 (personal preferences)
and the list goes on & on & on....

BUT the S3 still does all those things more than adequately. For me, its a clinical all rounder - hence my 'OK' vote.

Currently me and the gf have S3, TT-s convertible and mini cooper.
Although it's the slowest, I love the crashy go-kart feel from the mini but I couldnt drive it all day long - hence my S3 ownership.
Exhaust note on the TT-s is 'raspier' and more distinct than the S3. I've noticed its design and style turns more heads than my S3. But it aint as practical as the S3

IMO, we all have different requirements, tastes and views about S3 ownership.
Hopefully this sounds balanced and unbiased towards the S3 without seemingly slating S3 ownership!!

Nope.
You must gush about your S3 or be damned.
It is the best car in the world.

Concede, or be banished to Other German car forums for ever:sly:

lol! Yeah, and dont go posting things looking like the face from a-team "hey baby, ive got three cars, one for fun, for for frolics, but my s3 does everything oooooook"

"Quit yo jibber jabber"

"Aye aint getting in no plane fool"

Yep, its `T` time

Its looking fairly conclusive, and cast doubts over Bowfers claims of "99% of the population find the S3 boring".

Maybe Bowfres comment was aimed at the S3 owners who are capable of removing their head from their **** and objectively driving other cars?

The S3 is a damn good car - efficient hits the nail on the head.
But thrilling to drive?
Next to what?
A Proton?

I guess it all depends on what you've driven...and what you can compare it to.

I doubt many are saying it's a bad car...as plainly it isn't.
But it doesn't thrill like some...

I don't see the problem with owners accepting that.

I'm assuming your reference is aimed at me, regarding the 'over used 8L' ... car that did 13,500 road miles in 3 1/2 years, so hardly over used.

I'd just like to make a point here:
I have never complained about the running costs of my 8L S3...they were high, but if I spent all week polishing it and weekends cruising to the local wine bar like many S3 owners, I doubt I'd have spent so much on 'consumables'. I didn't...I actually used it and used it hard - surely what the flagship sporty A3 was designed to do?
Drive an 8P the same way...and you'll wear stuff out too.

I also don't have a problem with either the 8L or 8P S3s...I think both are damn good cars (my 8L stands out as the best car I've ever owned) but efficient / clinical they are (both) and dull to drive (both) next to others I've driven.
If I were looking for another good all round car, I'd have an 8P tomorrow (but I'd accept it's not the dogs danglies where driving thrills are concerned)

the motoring press hate the S3 but cant seem to give a valid reason why. most owners I know love them.

I would hope owners do...

It's very difficult to criticise a car you've just spent £28k+ on...sadly, the line between finding it difficult to criticise and being blinkered is a fine one.
One many seem to be unable to cross.

I'm pleased they are happy with their car...but that doesn't meen it's perfect for everyone.

How did we get back here?
I think everyone has said that the Cayman will be more of a drivers car - no one is disputing that.
And frankly, any car can be thrilling, on the right road at the right time. You don't have to have a Porsche to have a thrilling drive - granted an S3 won't have the dynamic ability of a Porsche..... but everyone knows their meeting completely different design briefs!

I think people were taking offence to Bowfers instant slamming of the A3/S3 and rail roading yet another thread..... it's sad to read as it's an Audi forum, for Audi enthusiats here to share their expereinces.
EVERYONE knows Bowfer had a dud car and hated it, but I just get tired of him coming in to rip a thread to pieces becuase his one dud car, means that every other A3/S3 is a heap of cr@p too!

Doesn't go with the vibe of what a forum is all about - never feels constructive!

I'm off out for some vino rouge...

I personally if I was bored with my car & thought it was dull would sell it asap, I wouldnt be able to stand driving a car I actually didnt like that much, which to me saying these things is exactly what it is, I personally loved my S3 for 7 years until day went, every car I've bought was because I knew what I was buying & what to expect but still thought great car, never got bored & never dull, current one ye doesnt have the power of previous but still think its a great car

Just cant see how people on here that are wingeing there cars boring & dull still drive them, trust me if I thought this about my car the economy would also have feck all to do with it, it would be gone like that.

Anyway, anyone seen my hat

I'll just accept that you are so very right. besides ;looking at your signature, its obvious to me now *you know your stuff*...

Different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

I'll admit I have a boring car...semi-interesting at best...worthy of a giggle here and there...but inherently boring.
But it is fine for the service it sees (shopping run, comfortable a to b stuff, no problem getting the odd parking knock etc)...I see no problem with buying and running a boring car.

Horses for courses.

C`mon, there are more than a few cars that fit between the extremes of Proton and S3, and Im sure you know that.

Ive driven lots of very nice stuff, including 911s, Boxsters TVRs etc, and fine cars they are, and all more exciting than the S3.

Its not like us S3 owners fell out of the sky and bought an S3? I for one didnt.
Ive had a string of very good Hot hatches and small coupes and IMHO the S3 is as good as the rest in the fun stakes.
Maybe its becasue Im/we are ham fisted and easily pleased, but go easy.

Anyway, Relax, the `head up ****` stuff is bit OTT mate, not necessary, and all a bit prickly considering its an online debate, let the blinkered be blinkered if thats the case. (not suggesting anyone is, ******* hell, watch the eggshells)

Right Im off to get ******.
Have a goodun

Cheers

Paul

I stand corrected...
The majority do indeed accept it's not perfect.

Just one or two blinkered fools.

Is there such a thing as a perfect car, not from where I'm standing

S3 is a great car, but I'd agree its not perfect, for one the styling externally lacks somewhat compared to old one & next 8L down & given an sline is pretty much the same anyway interms of looks

Still I'd buy one anyday & will asap

I'll just accept that you are so very right.

It's not about being right...
However, it's nice to accept there are other views, just as valid as yours.

besides ;looking at your signature, its obvious to me now *you know your stuff*...

Another dig?
I'm obviously too thick to get that one. Care to ellaborate?

Nope. I very much doubt it.

The S3 is a good car, in my book.
And one I'll probably buy again too.

You wanna talk about digs? Read back your posts from start to finish, then question why ppls backs are rubbed up - mine included...

I dont take well to people telling me what i should "accept" or beleive.

You have your opinion, and to be fair the others, nobody is telling you how wrong or right you are for having it are they? just dont try forcing down peoples throat. Thats not what this thread was about...

So my comments get your back up?
How sad is that?

It's the internet...you are always going to hear comments you don't like, or don't agree with...but you have to accept them and move on, not get bent out of shape over them.
You can counter them with a valid line of reasoning...or you can throw your toys out of the pram...

I dont take well to people telling me what i should "accept" or beleive.

I don't think anyone it 'telling' you what you should accept or believe...merely pointing out alternate views.

Thats not what this thread was about...

No...the thread was about having a dig at those who hold a different view to you, regarding your precious S3.

...and you don't expect a negative reaction?

The thread wasnt for those reasons and if thats your view, its making it all pretty clear now. *Hurrah*

Do me a favour now, go hassle someone else. Im bored to flamin death with it :blahblah1:
