My new A4 Project

Well its FWD so big power is a no really.
V8 would be nice but weight, and getting it in the A4 would be hassle. I reckon a bored 1.8 should do it. Just need to research it. The 2.7 would be lovely though lol

I recon the V8 isnt going to be THAT much heavier than the I4 turbo, as its got an alloy block.

And seen as you need to replace the engine anyway it really should be worth considering.

I think the 300hp is probably borderline for a FWD chassis, but at the same time its probably not going to be much worse than the rebored 1.8 your thinking about...

Theres no real point going for a rebored block unless your hoping for >300hp imo, and i dont think there would be too much of a difference between a 250-260hp 1.8T and the V8 with respect to drivability especially as the V8's powerdelivery will be much smoother.

Yeah, deadly keen.

I understand youre dealing with a very very good friend of mine re: flywheel ;)

Hmmmmm i promised myself a turbo you see, but i must admit the VR6's grunt is awesome so the V8 would be nice. I just cant be ***** with loads of fitment hassles though. But ill certainly look into it!

V8! V8! V8! V8! V8! V8!

Can't beat a giant slice of German beef.

If you decide to go V8, let me know.

That's my chosen option - I sold my modified 2,7T in favour of V8 power.

Dunno if you've looked into it yourself siena, but vag cat suggests that the A4 and A6 share their subframes on certain engines which would mean the mounting points are similar. They also use the same engine mounting brackets from the engine to the rubber mounting on the I4 and V6 lumps again suggesting they're in the same place.

I'd hope that means to get one into an A4 all you'd need is the A6 mounting bracketry for the V8 and hopefully it would mount right up to the standard subframe? At a push you may need an A6 V8 subframe to match the bracketry.

Any gen?

@ Aragorn, I've got A6 4,2 V8 mounts to replace the V6 ones.

Direct fit, and lines up with the current A4 set-up.

@ Drizz: It'll fit.

Sweet. I hope at some point to build a B5 A4 V8 as a track car. The cheapness of early v6 quattros and the ABZ lumps means that i can put together a very capable car for comparatively little cash!

Don't worry about the audi, get that Justy running some big Bhp

Ive discussed the V8 idea, but i promised myself if i sold my Astra Turbo, i had to replace it with another turbo. So instead of spending £2500 on getting the V8 and fitting it, im gonna chuck a couple of grand at the 1.8 in the form of rods, pistons, cometic, arp's, T4 turbo etc, so once its in the workshop in a couple of weeks ill get cracking!

Oh and the justy will get a make over too ;)
The local pit opens next month so we can go playing in little puddles and pot holes lol

So we started on the Audi tonight:

Now it was at this point we found this bit:

Then these:

So it appears we have a hole somewhere. We started splitting the box and engine as thats all that was left before the engine could come out but struggled with 2 bolts and decided we were hungry and cold so came home, but we will continue later in the week!

i wondered what happened to you Drizz, keep it up matey!

Gutted, had you been closer i would have had the whole car for what you paid !!
Shame to see another one broken, but they worth more in bits than as a whole

How much do you want for the engine loom, clocks and the ECU? Send me a PM if needed im in Braintree so can collect. Not sure i need the ecu yet but a price on the lot would be good.

If its immo1 the clocks arent tied to the ECU.

Immo1 cars are <~97 and have a small white box tucked up under the dashboard beside the ignition barrel connected to the immo pickup.

immo2 doesnt have this box, and the immo pickup is wired directly to the clocks.

Drizz, PM me if you want some info on 2.0l 20v, I am buidling one now with Gt2871.
Scat rods, OEM forged crank, supertech pistons, supertech valvetrain, stock block bored to 83mm = forged 2008cc bulletproof block

GT30 in either 71 or 76 trim will see way more than 300bhp even on average boost.
The guys running them are getting 380+ at the wheels especially the 76trim.

By my calculations a GT2871 56 trim running 18psi on a 2.0l 20v will give 200bhp at 400rpm and close to 400bhp when it runs out of steam. that is lots of low down torque and plenty for a FWD to be dealing with.
This based on 630cc Tapp Auto file, custom mani, Tial Vband exhuats housing, 44mm tial WG, 3"DP and 2.75" exhaust, stock cams, inlet, FMIC etc.

I bought all my bits at PAG, QED and Tapp in US and Canada. buy loads of spare bits if you can and sell them on here to get cash.

I have heard that if you have a mate in the US you can have stuff delivered to them and then "re-import" the goods from the US to UK as if you are paying to have them returned to the UK without import tax (cos effectively they think they came from here anyway!! ;)
I wouldn't know anything about the details though......neither would my mate in NY.

Yeah already seen that. I wanted to go full hog on this project but cant justify this, my Vectra GSi, my Discovery and Defender 110, so Audi has to go as the GSi, and Disco are all runners. It was an impulse buy and if the Land Rover situation hadnt bugged me (i.e. wanting to build a defender) then i would have carried on, but i need to buy a house this year and the Audi is a bit more technical/pricey than a nut and bolt land rover LOL

ignore that then, just read the rest of the thread.
crankcase bits were they?

I picked up a spare block with cambelt damage for my project.
collected for free. served my purpose and allowed me to keep driving.
you can get 1.8t blocks with internal damage for next to nothing (if not nothing!)
its not like you need the internals.

Whats the defender project Drizz?

I'm currently (very slowly) rebuilding an old 90 onto a new galv chassis, and updating or upgrading as much as i can on the way. Hence I picked up a nice Audi 4.2 V8 to power it ;)

I currently have this:

And want to build something like this. On the first look it seems to be a normal 110, but its not. See the spec too:

i probably wont be going that extreme ;)

Will be keeping the suspension etc pretty close to standard 90 parts. Uprated shocks and springs, polybushes all round. I plan to keep the ride height standard, although i'll likely need to tweak the springs as the V8 wont weigh the same as the derv that comes out, and i hope to have two sets of wheels, one with proper mud offroad tyres (235/85 or perhaps bigger if i'll get away with it) and the other with proper road tyres perhaps on some 18's. Idea being that while offroad, the big tyres give the extra diff to ground clearance thats always needed, while not harming on road performance too much by using proper road tyres, and also means i wont wear out the muds doing lots of miles on them..

Hoping to use the V8 with an R380 and custom bellhousing, Probably some uprated bits in the axles and brakes dept, and some comfy seats.

Standard bodywork and a cool color to finish it off!

with proper mud offroad tyres (235/85 or perhaps bigger if i'll get away with it)

You should be able to fit 265/75 on a defender in standard form shouldn't you? i got some special track 265/75 for my discovery and they added about 1" 1/2 on the ride height. only problem is i have had to hack of most of the body work round the arches and it still catches.

Drizz i know what you mean land rover parts are so cheap i picked up a whole exhaust from the turbo back for £59. where as the audi i've just had to spend £1200 odd on parts

yer 265/75 are a bit wider and i was thinking they might catch on the arches etc too?

They're the same diameter as 235/85's anyway though and being that bit narrower will help i hope.

Probably be using something like Insa Turbo Special Tracks for the Mud tyres, and something fully road biased for road use, might even sneak some Eagle F1's on there depending on whats available at the time ;)

yeah the 253/85 are alot narrower as i mate i go greenlaneing with has them and he has hardly had to trim anything. they do look really skinny in comparison tho and the 265's do have a tendancy to wonder a bit. I have a second set of wheels for onroad driving but I can never be bothered to change them over

i guess time will tell how it gets used etc, but if it was being used on the road for any length of time (as i kinda hope it will) rather than just a weekend offroad toy, i'd defo want the road tyres on there so it actually has enough grip to turn and stop safely!

Well its definitely being broken. Ive advertised the Leather in classifieds, so its definitley not being brought back to life!

Drizz its a shame 2nd Audi, i hope this hasn't put you off Audi's

No i knew this one was ****** before i bought it chap, just with the Land Rovers ive got no time and space and more so money isnt available for the Audi. One day i WILL have an RS4 though....
Id let it go for £450 as it is but as ive been offered £250 for the seats and £100 for the wheels it will more than likely be broken...

So John got the Audi up on jacks:

29012009703.jpg

And got the engine out:

29012009704.jpg

The dual mass flywheel had sheared itself to two parts:

29012009705.jpg

And the rod tried to escape:

29012009706.jpg

So we carried on stripping it down:

29012009727.jpg

And how it sits now:

29012009736.jpg

Everythings going on eBay i reckon....
