was just wondering if any one knew any methods that i cud use to increase my 98 1.6 a4 i know its not much but i like it,
i wud be happy with another 10 bhp if possible, i am wary of the fact that the engine is not really designed to produce more than 100 bhp just seeing if theres any methods i was unaware of
 
air filter, exhaust, cams - in that order
then you could look at cylinder head work, raising compression, porting, remap etc etc.
but you probably don;t want to start throwing money into it...

or sell it and get a 1.8-2.0l

leave your spare wheel, jack and tools at home. take 40-50kg out of your car. noticeable.
 
on a motor like that nitrous would get very expensive as you'd end up using it all the time...

I wouldnt even bother trying to tune it, By the time you've spent money on an exhaust, cams etc and gained 10hp, you'll have spent more than it costs to haul the 1.6 out and install a 1.8T

you can pick up 1.8T motors for 300quid if you are patient and for 500quid easily, and it seems to be it would be far more worthwhile dropping that in than messing with the 1.6.

Is there any particular reason you went for the 1.6 in the first place?
 
When I had my 1600 Avant I threw on a back box and stuck a K&N panel filter in and then driled the cold side of the airbox. Had loads of induction roar picked up a little better but if I'm honest it was all a bit of a waste of time.
 
I can vouch for the 1.8t swap ;-)

However the car is then listed as modified so will cost more to insure than a std S4.
 
depends on the insurer mate!

When i pulled the wheezing 1.0 out of my old nova and dropped the 1400 in, my policy increased by a whopping 9 quid for the year!
 
When we took the oil burning 1600cc CVH from the bay of a mates Fiesta XR2 and stuck a 2litre Zetec on bike carbs the premium went up by £16

they were **** in 1968, **** in 1988 and even more **** now theres nice sensible EFI systems to be had!

(you may have noticed i dislike carbs :D)

I saw a B7 V8 being stripped by my pet engineer for a kit car to be run on DTH throttle bodies. they are carbs but not as you remember in 1968 (you really that old?)

good way to achieve 100bhp to 1 litre on a well tuned engine on carbs. without having to run complex and expensive aftermarket EFI management. which is why he has done it.
lots of GTi guys running Bill Brockbanks ITB kits and getting close to 200bhp out of 2.0l 16v stroked Gti engines.....an engine that changed little in 25 years.

I've been trying to get away from carbs for ages too. Does nothing for my waistline!
 
The best premium for my converted 1.8se to a 1.8t was £465 at the tender age of 37 with massive no claims bonus(ie ten years) Mind you it is garanteed value and with all mods etc.
might be worth getting a quote before swapping/changing
 
jcb: i'm not saying they dont make good power, but a proper mapped EFI setup WILL be better, in terms of power, torque spread and drivability, fuel consumption etc.

and no i wasnt around in 1968, and was only 4yo in 1988 ;)

Most of these engines are on distributorless ignition, so you need some kinda management anyway to do the sparks. Just seems a waste putting the work in, then stopping short for the sake of a few hundered quid.

With carbs you end up chosing to have either all out power, with crap midrange and not a hope of it driving nicely, or choke it down to get nice drivability at low and midrange at the expense of your power.

A Vauxhall XE with ITB's will make somewhere around 190-200hp, depending on the exhaust manifold used, the same motor on quad barrel sidedraft webers will be lucky to make 170hp, and will use a ton more fuel and still not drive as nicely.
 
I WENT FOR THE 1.6 FOR THE ONLY REASON THAT IRELAND IS A RIP OFF AND THAT MY INSURANCE IS 1600 EUROS N TAX NEARLY 500 EUROS N JUST OUT OF COLLEGE, ILL UPGRADE HOPEFULLY IN A YR OR 2.
IS THERE MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE WITH THE 1.8
 
i drive a 1.8se (i.e. non turbo) and i think it's handy enough for a family saloon. not sure how much more driveable it is compared to the 1.6.

for reference, my insurance this year came out at £120 tpf&t :)
