I think my clutch may be coming to the end of it's serviceable life.

any suggestions on what to use for a replacement? does the S4 or TDi versions direct fit and offer upgraded performance?

mine is 96 1.8t AEB standard 5 speed 2wd

S4 or TDI will be 240mm, and won't fit your dual-mass flywheel, which is designed to accept a 228mm item.

You can however upgrade to a 240mm set-up, running a custom 1,8T single-mass flywheel, designed to accept the larger clutch friction disc / pressure plate.
 
or you could get yourself a Southbend uprated clutch and or flywheel for the 1.8t.
lots of guys running stage three or four versions on here (soupie, topgear etc)
very hard wearing, holds higher torque for current or future remaps and does not require a powerlifters left leg......
 
i think if the flywheel is dead and in need of replacement anyway, i'd be going single mass 240mm.

I think that comparing an uprated 228mm clutch, with an OE 240, you'll find they'd have very similar torque handling (the 240 might even be better if you buy an RS4 one or similar), but the OE clutch will be smoother and lighter to use.
 
how much is a custom flywheel?

Siena quoted me £250 for a single mass flywheel for my V8 motor, which would take a 240mm clutch.
 
if you can get dual mass ones for £250 I will take one!
best price I can find is in the US and its still well over $500 before you get stiffed for tax.

interesting option though, never considered changing size.

OEM dual-mass is £463.57 + VAT, enough to write a high-miler off, when combined with clutch and labor.

Single-mass is £257, in either 228 or 241mm clutch variant.

I am concerned about transmission whine and rattle at idle with single mass, would be interested to see if anyone running one has managed to overcome this common problem going from dual to single mass.

PM dsmclark30v on here - he's running one of mine, 6.6 kilos, OEM is 12 kilos.
His was fitted yesterday, and from all accounts, he's pleased with it. No chatter, rattle or whine.
 
Not running mine yet - I'm not starting my engine / tranny install till March.
 
my car is in on monday, so no time to order anything specialist in. hoping for an oem swap. so if the flywheel is toast what is needed to swap to single mass?
 
^^^ Nothing extra is needed.

All you need to do is decide what sort of clutch - 228 or 241mm, solid or sprung hub.
 
My clutch is also near dead, i would like to get something more meaty in with one of those custom flywheels too :).

How would the pedal feel with that custom flywheel and the s4 clutch?
 
^^^ Heavier, bite will take getting used to, as it'll be closer to the bottom.

B5's tend to bite high.
 
Not worried about the bite as long as its useable daily and wont give me leg ache. I have a twin plate in the silvia and i dont want to have anything like that as a daily.
 
are OEM clutch pressure plates not all solid hub run with OEM dual mass flywheel?
running single mass with a solid hub pressure plate would be a fierce contact with no spring or bush to take up torque.

would that not be a bit harsh for a daily driver?
not to mention the wear rate I would assume unless you are going with aggresive "puck style" solid hub pressure plate it wouldn't last too long.
 
^^^ I think you're mixing things up here, Jcb.

All OEM Audi pressure plates ARE sprung, it's the friction disc that comes in 2 variants - solid or sprung.

Oddly enough, the B5 RS4 has the obligatory dual-mass flywheel, so you'd expect the friction disc to be solid. But, it's sprung.

Whereas, all B5 V6 30V run a solid hub friction disc, in conjunction with the dual-mass flywheel.

More bite, yes.

But better clutch take-up, after a day driving, you don't see it as harsh.
I've driven modified RS4's with high torque levels, running this set-up, and they're fine.
