sorry for posting this twice, i just wanted to get maximum exposure....

Hi all

I have a 2004 A3 2.0Tdi 3dr.

It has gone into limp mode twice this week, so I took it to an audi specilist to have it looked at.

It threw a code 16683 P0299

It has only gone into limp mode when i am sitting at around 70mph, with no load on the engine what so ever.

Has anyone else ever had this happen to them?? :ermm:

Also do the turbos have variable vein geomerty??

If any out there is in the know, please can you fill me in.

Thanks

A!

16683-Boost Pressure Regulation: Control Rangenot reached

Possible Symptoms

  • Reduced Power Output
  • Limp Mode
Possible Causes

  • Hoses/Pipes incorrect connected, disconnected or leaking
  • Charger Pressure Control defective
Possible Solutions

  • Check Hoses/Pipes to/between Components
  • Check / Clean / Replace Charge Pressure Control

Thanks for the speedy replys.

The specilist said it was overboosting......

Which is odd as everything iv seen on tinternet says lower limit not reached.

Do Audi usually charge to run the check on their OBDI thingy?
If not i will run it down there tomorrow.

I cant see it will be a boost leak as its an intermittant fault.
Surly if there was a leak the problem would happen all the time?

Another thing is it is fairly lumpy on idle, would a faulty anti-shudder valve cause this?

Thanks so much for the help

The lumpy idle could be the flywheel issue on most tdis of that range...

My idle was lumpy when i had an air like - really juddery.

I'd check the pipes first before you start spending - it could be intermittent as it only happens at certain temps/certain boost etc.

My air leak was the seal between the EGR and the manifold head...

Well, I spent the morning looking for a boost leak.

I found nothing! lol

A quick question, when I rev the engine and let off again, there is a "TISHHH" noise. Is this normal? It sounds like something venting to atmospheric?

It is going back to the dealer I bought it from today, hopefully they can fix it.

Mine does that.

When Im in low revs a i boot without downshift and then lift it, it makes a dumpvalve noise but its a lot quiter....

I think it is normal...

How many miles has your car done?
If it is around 60k, it could be possible that your variable vanes in
the turbo have gumed up with carbon, causing them to stick and give
you an overboost situation.

Its done 70k, the audi specilist did mention that actually.

I am going to give him another call tomorrow and see what he says.

Cheers

Well its going back to the dealer today.

I have to drive a crappy R reg impretza estate while its being check over.

The dealer ahs been pretty good so far, he even said if it needs a new turbo they will sort it out no problem. Luckly he deals with Audi's which have come straight from the main dealer as PX's, so hopefully it will be looked at by a pro.

Thanks again for all the info guys, I will keep yall posted.

A!:salute:

The car has been with the dealer for three days now, and I miss it!:sob:

I am sick fed up of the crappy imprtza they have given me as a courtisy car.

Turns out my A3 has a boost leak................................ AND the turbo is knackered! So it sounds like a good buy! lol

Long and the short of it is the warrenty does not fully cover the cost of a new turbo and a replacement valve which is leaking.

So I have to shell out another £200. Not impressed. But ateast it will have a new turbo....

Just means I cant afford a remap for another few months. :sign_unfair:

I shoul dhave it back saturday and cant wait!

A!

What a pain! Sounds like you are not having much fun!

If I am reading this correct £200 for a new turbo is not too bad at all! I guess that car smoked a fair bit with the boost leak too?

It might not be of too much help but, as for the remap - we are offering a package deal at the moment; for Custom-Code Phase 1 and Green Cotton air filter it will be £330.00 on your model.

Let me know how you get on with the car anyway :)

Mike

APL, Given the age of your car and its current problems, remapping it would be akin to visiting your Grandma in hospital suffering from lung cancer, and taking her a pack of 200 cigarettes.

Agreed, but hopefully when it has a new turbo it should be fine dont you recon?

70k is not that much for a derv and its not THAT old really.

As I say the 200 pounds put aside for a remap has now got to be spent on the turbo so I will have to wait a while anyways.

I will see how it behaves over the next few months then make a decision.

And yeah I recon only having to pay 200 towards the turbo is pretty lucky, but on the other hand the dealer should not have sold it with a dodgy turbo:shrug:

I guess it is possible it will feel a bit quicker anyway with the boost leak fixed and a new turbo, so maybe that will satisfy my ich for a while... who knows!

Cheers

Oh yes, I was only talking about the remap to be done after the new replacement turbo, otherwise it would just be pointless!

70K on a diesel engine is not much, just about bedding in ;) I have seen diesels up to 180K surprisingly without any problems too!! But I guess at that point most parts had been changed anyway!

Also it can really depend on how the car has been treated, I had done 52K when I managed to blow my turbo on my Ibiza PD130..... But I was on Donning ton race track. A friend of mine drives his Ibiza PD130 VERY hard and has been through about 3-4 turbots in 60-70K I have started to lose count now!

£200 for a turbo is a good price but I understand what you are saying, it is just a real big downer when you have to buy parts to repair and fix cars!

Without the leak in theory it should be a little faster :)

Mike

Well after nearly two weeks I STILL don't ahve my A3 back.
The garage say the turbo they were snet was also faulty, so they are now waiting for a new one to be sent.

Its getting annoying now, but atleast they have weavered all charges.

I really want it back now :(

As long as its back and all working - it will all be good.

Look on the good side - your car could have been in and out of garages, paying bills, broken down on the side of the road, turbo failure could have led to a new engine etc. etc.

Least it all should be sorted and working soon :D

I got it back yesterday :D:D:D:D

Shiny new turbo and pulling well again.

Turbo whistle is MUCH quieter now.......

...... remap coming end of feb then its off to the pod on the 29th of march!

Hi Guys

I have an audi a3 2007 2.0 tdi. Recently the car would go into limp mode at roughly 90mph in 6th gear. Changed the turbo pipe which i bought direct from audi as I was initially told by the mechanic it was broken brackets on the turbo pipe causing an "overboost" which forced the car into limp mode. Since then the car has gone into limp mode twice again doing about 90mph in 6th gear. The noise from the turbo is also very apparent now and doesnt sound as it used to. its constantly there when the turbo kicks in even on low speeds. I have used 2 bottles of Forte turbo cleaner which has helped slightly the car is doing 85mph ish without going into limp mode however it doesnt really seem to want to go any faster than that. A few mechanics are now telling me to change my turbo. Just wanted to know what you guys think and would i be able to drive the current turbo into the ground without it causing further problems?

PLEASE GET BACK TO ME SOON GUYS :(
