coding a new key?...

Guys, is it possible to do this myself? Or is it a main stealer job?

My old key is very tired and keeps falling apart, car in question is a 1999 a4, its the 3 button fob if that helps?

Any advice would be really appreciated!!!!

about £35 to code or free if your dealer is the decent sort

think the metal key part is £20 odd quid but as fraser says def a dealer job, my mate offered to do mine for free but he's a mate so duno what the stealers should charge??

you can code the fob part for c/locking yourself (but you need two keys), just not the transponder to start car

if you have vagcom and the SKC code you can do it all yourself, if you dont have the SKC code, you could always get a new fob, transfer the blade and immo chip into it, and just reprogram the fob, depending on whats up with the current key.

Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)​

1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second key.
3. Using the remote control press the Unlock button once, and the horn will sound once.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the coding procedure. The remote control will now be programmed.
NOTE : When performing programming on additional remotes the procedure is the same, except you press the unlock button 2, 3 or 4 times for the different remote.
For example : If programming 2 remotes press the unlock button twice with a 1 second interval between each press, repeat for 3 and 4 remotes.
5. Switch Ignition OFF.
6. Remove key from ignition and check for operation.
7. The coding procedure can be repeated up to 4 times for additional remotes.
8. The ignition must be switched OFF between programming each remote control.
Remote Control Erasing (1997 ON)​

1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.
2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second key.
3. Press the remote control unlock button 5 times in 1 second intervals. A short horn will sound.
4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate memory erase.
5. Switch ignition OFF, all remotes are now erased.​

Chaps, you'll have to bear with me, im new to this and a little confused.

The key im currently using is working, its just falling apart. I have a brand new spare, with the blade already in (opens my doors via the locks), i put new batteries in and it does nothing off the buttons, so i definatley need this programming is that correct?

About this vagcom etc i havent a clus what that is sorry?

you could just take the immbo chip out of the falling apart key and swap it inside the new key along with the blade. bish bash bosh job done, your key in a new housing.

If you want to keep the falling apart key as spare and make the NEW key start the car then you'll either need to hit the dealer or get VAG-TACHO, which is a computer program that will allow you to pull your SKC code from your immbo box. Take VAG-COM, another bit of software and code the NEW key to start the car, then you have 2 working keys, one falling part and 1 NEW key

Ah, I presume that second key will start the car?

if so, if you follow the instructions that izzy posted you should be able to get that second keys remote working.

just follow the below instructions that i posted and it should do the trick. no need to swap parts.

if youve only got one key capable of starting the car i wouldnt risk swapping the 'chip' its a glass capsule transponder, easy to break

Right chaps, i swapped the insides over, still would not work, ill now follow izzys guide and see how i get on.

Still no joy lads, put the new key in ignition on, locked the door with the second one, pressed unlock, the loghts flash but no horn sounds, pressed again after 6 seconds and nothing, the new key is still the same?

you might want to give it a couple of goes.

if it still does not work. get Vagcom on it.

Ive tried 3 or 4 times now mate, i dont know what vagcom is sorry!

does fob part number (4d0 837 231) match, b6 keys look the same but wont work
step 3. horn wont sound unless its coded to sound during normal locking
step 4. after the second press the car should unlock, once unlocked remove key from door and key from ignition and close door before pressing any buttons
if its not unlocking somethings wrong

Stupid me, sorry olds kool, just remembered my central locking pump unit has failed, still waiting for the parts to repair that, maybe thats why the re coding is not working, the parts will be here in a couple of days, ill try again once ive got the central locking working?

You can get cheap leads off ebay for a tenner, with a free version of the software, but that doesnt* let you do everything. If you were to buy it it costs $100ish for the software, which you can use with the ebay lead, or $250ish for the lead and software together from the manufacturer.
