Only through the PS3....

Not yet, only got a 720p TV at the moment, so no point.
When I go 1080p, I'll undoubtedly go blu-ray.
I'm not in a hurry though, I'm happy with the DVD picture I get from my upscaling Toshiba DVD player, and it was only £60!

Blu Ray through PS3 playing on my 1080p TV is excellent. Dont see the point of buying a seperate player.

Bluray is ****** good but takes fecking forever to load the damn discs, of course with high definition & data content it would but god its painfully slow through loading which is why I'm returning my player, patients is a virtue but not for that long.

Latest Panasonic Bluray player aswell & they are pretty good usually.

Play mine through laptop connected to 1080p tv, with right codecs and player never had a problem and picture is superb.

I've gone blu-ray, went for a samsung BDP-1400 (i don't have nor want PS3). I use it through a 46" 1080p TV. The main reasons I chose it were the following:

- It will output bitstream audio which my amp can decode into DTS HD Master Audio (which is breathtaking with the right movie).
- Used with the right cable (HDMI V1.3a) and TV it will output 16bit colour (the reds, greens and blues are awesome).
- It'll upscale DVD's (i'd flogged my DVD player and was left with a 360 which was pants)
- It matches my TV (both Samsung)

I'm a bit of a geek with home cinema so I had quite specific requirments, if you haven't already guessed!

I have a PS3 for Blue Ray, but I bought it as a DVD player and no more. The upscaling on the PS3 is the equivalent to many high end DVD players costing much more. I dont really play games on it at all (thats what the 360 is for).

The best thing about the PS3 is, unlike most standalone BR players, they can be easily upgraded through firmware updates. The BR market is still relativley new, and there are new features added all the time. Some of the first players are unable to play some of this content, and are not upgradable as the market never really agreed on a base format.

If you are thinking of entering the BR market you could do a lot worse than a PS3 for this.

(Oh yeah, dont be fooled by upscaling DVD players. It doesn't make your DVD's high definition, all it does is stretch the SD picture into HD resolution, it cant add content that isn't already in the source. That said, a good upscaler will do wonders to your SD picture on an HD screen.)

I went PS3 for blu-ray/DVD It is the only player that will be able to upgrade to the new Version 2 standard (internet connection)
As said I have back to back tested 2k dvd players 1k blue-ray player and the sub 400 PS3 holds its own very well.

Got a Panasonic BD-30 (to match Panny 42" PZ85 Full HD TV). The picture with both blu-ray discs and SD DVDs is absolutely awesome - it is particularly impressive with SD content, which is contrary to a number of reviews I read before buying it - maybe the TV's video upscaling is the winner here. Can thoroughly recommend this player, and it is not slow at loading discs.

A word of caution about the audio outputs for this player, though. It will output HD sound via HDMI, but it does not internally decode True HD, DTS-Master HD etc. codecs, so you cannot get these via the 5.1 analog outs - you will only get the relevant digital 5.1 format via this route, not HD. This may be an issue if your AV amp doesn't support HD audio via HDMI (like my Arcam) - however, uncompressed soundtracks (for blu-ray discs that have them) sound so amazing via the analogs (as does the DD5.1 via the coax) through the Arcam that it was not a deal breaker for me. The BD-50 which is just about to be released here (I think around £450-500) does decode these HD codecs and will output through the analog 5.1s.

just brought a new Sony Viao lap top with a blu ray drive in it so i will be hooking that up with my 40" 1080p LCD Tv.....

i got my blue ray ps3 runing on a full digital 42 inch panasonic plasma its awesome with a 400 pound onko 5.1 surround its like the cinema unbeleivable i love it also the games like gt4 and call of duti you hear the bullets wizzing past and the subwoofer booming its all good

I had a glimpse at my mates ps3 playing a film and was impressed

hi got ps3 download hd movies of rapid put it through tsmuxer then onto a sd card pop it in the ps3 looks sweet 42 ins lcd:p

does that mean iam 2 years younger now lol .ill stick with my 60 gig hd :whistle2:

Why not just download movies in HD and stream them over the home network to the PS3? Its how i do it, so no need for a seperate HDD.

no...have a look at the Popcorn A-110 (NMT) and then you will understand what I'm talking about ;)

and it would be a good idea to invest in one.

I have 3 blu ray players, films are far better on them, make sure u have a tv to do it justice tho

I have just bought a Sony S350 from Amazon. £160 delivered, really nice player. Good looking player gets excellent reviews. Really happy with it.

Had, images were great but didnt like as took to long to load, yes I know its an HD vastly bigger data but still was painful to wait, so sold it also given the net I cant see bluray really becoming such a mainstream use unless dvd's drop through the floor & players follow suit, but why would I need it when net is changing everyday to cater for these formats, lucky I sold for what I paid cause tbh dvd's as always are overpriced & greedy studios, no wonder people want to download for free cause £20-£30 for a dvd is ****** well outrageous & a con!!!!!!

TBH, prices of BR have come down a lot these days. 3for £20 sometimes on amazon...can't really complain. IMO, BR is already a mainstream esp among AV enthusiasts

I've sold almost all of my DVDs and HD DVD and buying only BR now. Only kept my HD DVD players as upscaling DVD players if I need them

the quality, both video and sounds are so much better than DVD. Or if you have an upscaling DVD, then it might do the trick but still the sound quality (DTS-HD, TrueHD etc...) won't be available

In terms of loading...is there anything that can be slower than Toshiba's HD DVD players...My HD XE1 and EP35 take ages to load...LOL

Enthusiasts arent exactly mainstream as such, I was meaning for Joe Bloggs walking into currys, lol

& I'm surprised they're that cheap from amazon but is that for new releases or older movies which are very outdated & just upscaled, but personally I dont think I will jump on this bandwagon again, waste of time & money with internet now

& yes the Panasonic BR players are unreal slow to load, hence sold, cant justify the expense

Also SD cards are becoming a new form for movie rentals as some online rental stores do, think in the US, given most new PC's have digital audio outputs etc, it will catch on more & more, if I really want BR I'll get drive for PC, but cant see it anytime soon.

If you want a blu ray player, stick the the Sony models, I have tried, Samsung and Panasonic and they are simply ***** in comparison. The Sony players are fast, picture and sound are excellent and they look nice too!

I am a massive fan of blueray Ive got a 108p 37inch toshiba in the lounge connected to a digital HD streamer and PS3 I also have a 32 inch 720p in the bedroom for v+ and my main system is my cinema which is in a log cabin in my garden that im almost finished on. thats only 720p but its a optoma projector with a 104inch screen this is connected to a ps3 and speakers that shake the ground.

If you love films its a worthwhile investment the colours and clarity can be fantastic. But some blueray discs eems to just be rebadged standard def.

Oh and as others have mentioned you cant go wrong with most of the sony players.
