Ok so im new here, currently looking at buying an a3. Bein only 18 i can only afford the 1.9 for insurance reasons. Say if i was to get a panel filter and a remap, what sort of gains would i be expecting, i understand that the standard 1.9 is around 100 bhp?

Would you suggest any other reasonable priced performance mods that should see an increase in bhp?

Thanks, Tom

alright mate
im 19 now but was 18 when i bought my a3 2.0tdi sport and my insurance is quite alot but very cheap compared to most.

im paying £1600 for it with directline

I'm 19 now too but I got mine when i were 18...2.0 TDI.

With remap, it'll prob be around 140bhp.

TBH, the diff between a 2.0 TDI and 1.9 TDI was £120ish for me....

Directline dont insure me !! Lol

19, No NCB - i was a named driver on the golf.

i need to change my insurance though - i think I'm with ecar and they're charging me a bomb to declare my mods (£94 for the wheels!)... That's why I'm holding back on them at the min...

I've just declard the wheels up to now :D Although the S3 brakes are on so I'm going to declare them when payday comes (5days)

The remaps not on the car yet so its not declared - but i get 2 years driving experiance in Feb so I'm going to change to a diff company then declare it.

I think I'm paying round £1650ish with mods with ecar... To declare the remap is a bomb (£320 iirc).

Cant believe your insurance is so cheap (compared to mine anyway)

You lot are gonna shout at me now but for a 1.9 its 1700 tpft :(, fully comp its around 2500..

For the 2.0tdi its 3200................tpft, i was shocked to say the least, darent look at fully comp.

Both were cheapest with Quinn Direct, but they allow all exterior mods for no extra cost so i suppose thats ok..

Why is my insurance so high? ive been drivin a year, no crashes, no points nothin, 1 years no claims, its rubbish.

Yes, if you insure a standard 2.0 PD140 I am sure that will be cheaper than trying to insure a modified 1.9 PD130. Your age + Modifications = Expensive.

I'm afraid it's a cruel fact of life (possibly one that you can blame on your Nova/Corsa driving brothers) that you need to keep your nose clean and wait a little before trying to insure a mod'd car.

that really is ridiculous, why should the price vary in such little time, because you bought your a3 pretty much the same time as me and before we has the same 1.4 golf, whats are we both going to get next year? S3? hahaha

i buggering hate insurance

Keep looking - thats steep.

Go direct to companys :S

You should be paying £2k max for a 2.0 TDI...

£2k :crying: Holy crap. Ive got a 2004 2.0 TDI Sport and mines only £400 Fully comp with full business cover. Is this an age or location problem?

Id love an S3 but probs not now - skint with uni :(

going to keep this one for atleast 2 years as its awesome. Cant fault it one bit :D

I'll let you know in Feb how i get on with insurance. I'm hoping to pay around £1300 (as that's what my mate is paying on his Golf GTTDI with one non fault crash) :D he's with LV btw.

How old are you if you dont mind me asking ?

I guess with me, living next to Moss side doesnt help :(

Tommy try direct line, from my experience with them they are fairly cheap for younger drivers however they don't like modifications until your 25, i stayed with them just to build up cheap no claims until i have enough to get cheap insurance with mods else where
i will need to hunt around soon for my renewal.

good luck mate

Im 31. Insurance has gone bonkers over recent years. I had an Impreza Turbo and an Accord Type-R before the A3, and was still only paying £650. Insurance companys take the **** IMO. i think you should get a partial refund on your premiums if you stay claim free each year, especially when paying in the thousands.

Definitely young age and being male would push premium right up.

Don't know what your situation is but have you thought about someone else being insured - mother, brother, sister?? -as main driver and adding yourself as extra named driver?? Not ideal but would save money in short term til you're out of the ultra high risk age range for insurers?

however people say you should add your mother blah blah blah

when i added my mum on my direct line it went from £1600 to £2000 and she has a perfect reccord no crash been driving for about 35 years and her insurance costs about £150 a yeard on a 3.1 turbo diesel isuzu trooper

Insurance has goen mad - when my unc was 19 (10 years ago) - he had a classic WRX STI and was paying £1000.

I've got an ATR as well but the cambelt snapped on it - it currently needs an engine rebuild tahtI'll be atempting this year :D I'm on my uncs trade policy so i can drive that but trade insurers dont really pay out when you have a bump so dont want to take the risk on the A3 as it took me age to save up and buy it !

Thanks for the info guys, ill see if there is any other ways around it, just a shame its all that money, could be goin to a set of wheels or somethin!!

Tom

I was 19 when I got my A3 2.0FSI, first policy in my own name and it was just over £1000 with elephant. I am now 21 and have declared my wheels and pay just over £700. all I can say is I would highly recommend putting other people with clean records onto your policy, by adding my mum and my sister I saved about £500!

I'm 20 with no ncb just brought a 04 2.0fsi, (group 12) my insurance is just 1300! fully comp. I'm with norwich union. i think the 2.0 tdi is insurance group 11 tho,

what group is the 2.0 fsi mate?

Youd be better off sourcing a complete engine, if it needs a bottom end, it will cost you more to repair than replace. If its just valve and top end damage, my mate has a spare cylinder head complete.;)

Like everyone else said, better off getting the 2.0 TDi rather than the 1.9 TDi.

I just recently turned 20 but got my 2.0 TDi Sport 140 when I was 19 with 2 years no claims for the price of just slightly over £1300 with Churchill, I was hoping to get a free dog with it, but didn't :(

I need to get a cambelt and get it compression tested...

I think i may be lucky but i have been looking for an engine I know but the H22A7 is rare! lol

Where abouts are you from? I might need the head off your mate?

Cheers

Thought of another option:

Without sounding too much like an advert - try Admiral, can get good discounts if you go with Multicar insurance, depends on if there's other family members who you stay with and their motors coming up for renewal but worth looking at?

Probably don't want to hear it but I pay £280 for 2.0 TDI fully comp with wife's car covered for about the same. Cheaper insurance - the one upside of getting old!

Thats not fairrr :Flush: lol

im jealous of other peoples insurance lol, have to wait a few years to get cheaper insurance :(

Dont Worry tommy my insurance aint all that. Was £980 for a year but had to two claims last year on my mum name. When some one hit my corsa (parked up) and drove off and when i went over a pothole which put a lovely dent into my traction arm. And audi said £2,000 some thign worth of damge to my car (chat s**t) So insurance has gone up now its more a less £130 a month and thats only a 1.6 fsi

I used to have a corsa lol, was really nice tbh, but now all chavs are starting to get them so i need to move on! Few months yet till ill get the audi but i cant wait, need to get saving!!

Back to the subject of power gains on the 1.9tdi... Bluefin claim a 27bhp increase from the standard 105bhp.

Has anybody had/have experience of the bluefin on a 1.9tdi?
