S3 front pads - quick reply needed please!

My S3 is in the 'shop for them to look at some brake squeal.

I won't bore you with the details but they're offering to change the front pads for half the normal price of £434 as a gesture of goodwill.

Is this the going rate for changing pads from an Audi dealership?!

How much would it cost from a normal garage roughly?

And how much are the pads on their own if I were to do them myself?

There're still plenty of miles left on the pads but half price always sounds good to me!

EDIT: Just phoned York Audi and they said £125!!! I think the man at Bedford has made a mistake somewhere!!

Okiedokie then! I have changed pads discs and drums on my old fiesta but if they're as easy as that was then I'll do it myself. I work in a big workshop anyway.

yeah the principle is the same as your old fiesta but on bigger proportions!

Also how long do the discs last? mine has done 32k and pads look like they have a fair bit left still.... Will it need both discs and pads when the pads have gone?

Discs should last for years and years. No need to replace them so soon. You go through many pairs of pads before the discs need replaced. Just make sure you don't run down the pads so much that the metal starts to rub on the discs - THATS when you need new discs! (as I found to my expense )

Just call Audi and ask how much pads are. Or buy some aftermarket ones from here http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com/

And to the OP with squealing brakes, take them off, and make sure they are properly greased before refitting them. Feck paying Audi any money to replace good pads.

OEM pads are £60+VAT IIRC.

I got mintex on mine and they were around £38ish.

Just wondering what sort of brake squeal did you experience?

I experience an intermittent brake squeal from the front brakes. It is most noticeable when im completely slowing down. If I take pressure off brake pedal and allow the car to coast then the squeal stops. I haven't noticed the squeal whilst driving and gently dab the brakes then continue (without actually stopping)

Audi have already investigated and assured me that they found nothing wrong and they suspect its the cold weather and road salt at this time of year. I dont believe that cos it has never happened on previous Audi vehicle and certainly doesnt occur on girlfriends TTs.

Only done 7.5k from new and brakes havent been abused so I dont know what the problem is.

Does this sound similar to your squeal?

My squeal only comes under light braking.

Once I told them it was the rear brakes that were the problem (the service woman hadn't written that down) they said they couldn't find a problem. But they cleaned it all up before putting it back together just in case.

It's still doing it though.

Yeah mine is also under light braking, literally as Im slowing down from 15mph to stand still. However, if I let the car roll to complete stand still (instead of applying brakes) there is NO squeal. Im puzzled and its annoying

If you don't apply the brakes you won't get any squeal, I don't understand why you're confused by that.

Mine is most obvious when I'm in a carpark for example and I'm using my brakes to gently adjust my speed rather than just stopping, if you get what I mean.

If I get the chance I'm going to strip them down myself when I'm back at work and apply plenty of copper slip.
