merry xmas ,,so i thought ,,driving my a4 home today and oil pump failed ,,engine is pumped ,,so looking for a replacement as my inlet camshaft is melted into the head ,what options due i have ,,engine replacements as its a 1,8t 163 2002 2wd

Any engine from the 1,8 TQS B5 > 1,8T B6 will be fine, just use your original ancillaries if going the B5 route.

Any ideas cause of failure? Was there any warning before the pump failed?

yes on the motorway ..oil check light came on then the beeper ,,pulled into services ,,but it was too late ,,i am wanting to turn the car into a six speed aswell when the engine was out ,,has anyone done this conversion

Have a look through the links, I had the same nightmare with the ever so great and reliable AVJ engine....who said they were bulletproof!!!!

Also do a search on Oil sludge because thats whats happened to yours, no oil getting to the top of the engine, pump failed and Bang!!!

Ive heard different storys of other engine wont fit or if they do it wont run right etc etc but there is people who know what they are doing.
Mind you mine is a Quattro so different ball game I guess!

Word of warning though, If you are going for an AVJ then be prepared to have you pants down because the breakers know these Fcuka's are rare as foook and take advantage with the price.

Keep us informed mate and Sorry to hear the bad news. It happened around this time for me aswell.

I have a 1,8T, still in a 2004 Passat 1,8T Sport, has done 53,000 miles.

Stuffed in the rear, but have had it running, albeit briefly, as I had to rig up a fuel pump, and a gallon of gas, as the gas tank was split.

had a couple of quotes £995 refurbed ,,£1200 for a 8000 mile 2004 with turbo...rally need to know engine codes that go in

starting stripping it down ,,u know its bad when the rear cam chain tensioner has melted

Spoke to a mate of mine who has more knowledge of Engine swaps etc and he said it'll be easier to fit a different engine code as its only FWD so least your options are greater.

Just make sure if you do go down that route then you have a good mechanic who knows what they are doing.

If it helps a full short AVJ engine is 2815 euros according to vagcat!

I have a 1,8T, still in a 2004 Passat 1,8T auto, has done 53,000 miles.

Stuffed in the rear, but have had it running, albeit briefly, as I had to rig up a fuel pump, and a gallon of gas, as the gas tank was split.

The auto has a different crank to the Manual doesnt it? The flywheel/torque converter fitting is different

Now why did I say auto?

I meant to say Sport. It's a 5-speed manual, I know the cranks are different, you can't fit the spigot bearing on an auto crank.

I am selling it, yes.

I bought it as a breaker, as it has black leather, and full-screen Volkswagen Sat Nav, which someone on here wants.

The receipt states "VW Passat Sedan 1,8T Highline", whatever that means.

well ..tell me your price ..wot mileage year of car:weight_lift2:

^^^ As stated above, in post #6...

Engine's from VW Passat 1,8T Sport, year is 2004, mileage is 53,000.

PM me if you're interested, and let me know how much you want left on the engine - i.e manifolds, injectors, coil packs, mounts, alternator / PAS pump / compressor etc.

Obviously, it'll probably be best to retain your original set-up.
