Im looking in to buying the A3 TDI SPORT (53-55 plate) and was wondering if there had been any issues with the gearbox?

I know the older models upto 2001/2 had problems with the gearbox's packing in ,so was a bit curious.

What other issues should i look out for ? i.e common faults etc.

AFAIK, the gearbox is not a common prob on the A3 8P.

I've heard of 1 DSG gearbox going wrong but a software update from Audi sorted it.

Common faults are the IMF (Intke manifold flap), it jams and needs to be changed (Around £300 parts and labour private garage but you could do it yourself).

the wheel bearings (my car was done at 38k and been fine since)

and there is the common prob with the head. If the car drinks coolant fluid, it may need a new head which will cost a bomb.

Thats about it TBH but if you get a fully serviced one with average miles, you should be good :D

nice one for that helpful info, i probably be bying one with around 90+k miles so best check for coolant loss first.......a challenge when buying privatley!:wtf:

The IMF went on my 54 plate TDi sport as well and was replaced by the dealer (it was a used approved).

I also had to have the flywheel and clutch replaced under warranty at 35000 miles. Probably a one off but, do a hill start when you test drive and listen out for low pitch vibrations.
