there are a few forums that you could read up on but IMHO you'll be as well to be humble, promise never to do it again and perhaps include that your job relies on it.

Many times I'm afraid to say. What were you pulled for?
Most speeding is handled via an offer of fixed penalty (£60 fine & 3 points) or if more serious (more than 20mph over the limit) then you will receive a summons. If you have a clean licence then you have very little to worry about. A court appearance will get you 6 points and a heavier fine (depending on your financial situation).

I take it they didn't offer you a fixed penalty and summonsed you there and then? As you say you were "pulled" I guess that means you were stopped by a car as opposed to receiving an NIP through the post? Surely the officers who stopped you would have told you the speed you were doing? That's what it all hinges on really.
Different forces have different policies. I got caught by Devon and Cornwall years ago and got a heavy fine and a short ban but no points. Dependant on you situation, a short ban of 7 - 14 days is preferable to points IMO. Won't be your decision though.
Do you have any existing points, If you run the risk of being disqualified under totting up then it's very worthwhile getting a letter from your employer and pleading "exceptional hardship" so you will have 12 points but no ban. Bear in mind that you can only use the reasons for exceptional hardship once in three years, so if you say loss of licence equals loss of job equals loss of family home then you won't be able to use those reasons again for three years.

my license is clean at the moment. I was on Leeds ring road at 8pm last night, and what use to a 70pmh zone, is now 40mph... stupid me. Didnt offer me a fixed penalty, said I had a nice car but need to slow down, which is true. Most annoying thing is its a stretch of road I travel down once or twice a week, so must have been changed very recently.... not an excuse of course, speeding is speeding.
Just want to try and minimise the penalty, but guess thats not up to me...

I got 5 points and a £350 fine for 100+mph on a dual carriageway.
Depends on the magistrate, whether hes in a good mood or not. Mine was the first case of the day so luckily all the tracksuit wearing chavs were after me.

they said, here is a notice intended prosecution, you need to slow down, then something like "you have a nice car so you will be fine, but others won't be"
I didnt really understand what he meant...
Hmmmmm strange, guess I cant say much on this, but it looks like you will get a seeing to from the Police....

I got done for doing 59 in a 30 by a lazer trap, court summon for me, 6points and £250 costs but no Ban, I did get a Solicitor to represent me though, even though I turned up myself, which cost me £150. A clean licence is a good starter, since it will be your first offence, it was actually my second motoring offence, as I got done for speeding in 1995, but that had cleared, and with a change of address, I had a clean licence thankfully.
Depends on a few factors but 70 in a 40 will be a minimum of 5 points and the fine could be anything really. If you have a clean licence theres really no point in fighting it as it's just a headache.
Im cureently on 8 points with a court case pending.
1st was in Nov 2005 and was 87 in a 60 at 2am in dry conditions on the A9 at the Cromarty Bridge, I got 4 points and a £300 fine.
2nd was in Dec 2006 and was 87 in a 60 again on A9 this time near Newtonmore, I got 4 points and £180 fine.
My 3rd in Apr 2008 is 60 entering a 40 (just) Im in dispute on this one but havnt event reached the point of telling my side and Ive already had 4 court dates, 2 of which I had to appear, 4 of which my solicitor had to appear, theres 2 more dates booked so this is going to cost me in excess of £1k on legal fees I reckon but it will be worth it if I keep my licence.

Depending on the court date for the Nov05 offence, those 4 points will be coming off on the anniversary, so drag it out as long as you can and you'll be back down to 4 points for the court appearance.

The 3 years were up on 8th Nov 2008 but unfortunately it doesnt work like that any more, its the points you have at the time of the offence

And they count for 4 years now as well, forgot about that little change they sneaked through. Looking at the dvla web site you only get 6 points for driving while disqualified, it's almost worth the risk, although how on earth they can honestly say excessive speed on an empty dual carriageway is in any way as dangerous as driving while disqualified god only knows. This country.......

The legal cover is for solicitors representing you in case of a dispute and this is a dispute to do with your car so I'd ring the insurance company and ask..

Yeah its silly. If you get banned your getting back your licence clean so why not just drive while banned and take the risk... worst case scenario is you get your licence back with 6 points if youre caught lol
Thats to cover all the government officials that drink & drive!

its not all roses driving while disqulified they can crush your car nowadays and you can end up doing a a spot inside or community service thats what happened to me

that is really poor actually you should be able to use that to your advantage in court
it will 100% help the situation and that the road used to be a 70 will go in your favour too as thats helped for me before now in court

I've just been on a "Speed Awareness Course" - a 4 hour lecture of illogical nonsense which gets you out of 3 points.
On it they actually used photos like yours (some of them not as bad as these) to illustrate situations where you couldn't get done for speeding due to poor signage.
I would definitely fight this one mate - keep those photos !

yes there are, but apparantly the most important signs are the ones that annouce the change in speed limit so my solicitor says...
bearing in mind this is broad daylight, I was actually done at 8pm and can honestly say I just didnt see that they had changed the limit...
gods knows, drove up the road again today, pretty much overtaken by every single person...
no one is seeing this speed limit at all, just lucky the plod pointed the laser device at me i guess
This might be of some use to you with regards to the legal requirements for signage.
Those pics prove that the initial speed limit signing is poor to say the least. I just don't know how you'll argue about missing the repeaters. That being said, if your solicitor is saying that the important factor is the first set then it sounds like it could go your way.

im not saying i expect to get away scot free, just an explaination as to why i was doing what I thought was national speed limit and not 40, I do speed, but very very rarely in 30 and 40 zones, so to be caught at 70 (which is bannable) in a 40 is not what i do (delibrately anyway)

Its this type of incident that is breeding a growing contempt for the authorities, among the general public.
We hear all kinds of initiatives to encourage improved relationships with the authorities, community policing etc ...etc then another `easy target` motorist is shafted be a traffic Nazi who has no concept of descretion.
How can you support and respect the people and rules that make it ok for average Joe to be shafted in such a way.
(I got done for 36 in a 30, dry road, 7 a.m, coasting down a hill, non-residential.., by a van parked amongst 10 other Contractor Transit vans, very sneaky),,,
Ok, we need Traffic Cops, and we need rules, but we need descretion to make it work properly.
It fcukin stinks mate.
Anyway, rant over.

yes mate, thats where this is, use to be 70, now 40 and these are the signs we are suppose to see so we dont speed
I go up and down that road occasionally. I was travelling down that road from the other way about a month ago and usually I accelerate straight after I see the national speed limit sign but it somehow disappeared so it seemed kinda odd. I see people fly by at like 60 all the time, I'm glad I don't do the same. Anyways, the placement of that sign is pretty stupid so I hope the court case goes well for you.
