A friend has just come back from three days at the Nurburgring.

While he was there, doing 8:45 laps in his 350bhp Impreza, has was 'left for dead' by a German regsitered, totally standard in appearance, orange S3. On further investiagion, it turns out that this car has 650ps (640bhp).

Anyone know anything about this?

Wow...Now that be amazing to see a S3 moving that quick.
I have not heard any thing about that. Would of loved to seen that. Quite interesting though

That is alot of HP. Fantastic. Must be the fastest S3 out there.

David

Wouldnt suprise me if jonny gets his car running over 550bhp by next March lol....Amazing how some people get there S3 tunned

Would also be the highest HP 2.0T FSI in the world so I call BS.. Sorry lol..

Probably 500bhp, think that would be enough..

Got all of the plans together so its just a case of doing it now! :)

Oh.. And saving too :(

Think that be enough 500bhp alot going from 265 lol!
good to hear all the plans together and the saving part ouch :( lol
But well worth it in the end

Depends how much cash you have really. Can get 800HP from a 2.5 litre F1 lol.

David

Exactly. Money = Power. As all motorsport. If you want it, it's possible.

David

I hazard a guess it might look S3 but under the hood I suspect its a different matter, 640bhp as Jonny says sounds unrealistic from the 2.0fsi, of course not impossible but to do what they do in an F1 car costs millions, S3 urm not as S3 as we would believe it to be huh Jonny, but I'd like to be proved so wrong as would really impress me they got that out of the 2.0 engine.

Aye, sounds a bit much! That plus is not all just about the power, its the delivery too. S3 is primary FWD with kick of RWD, cant help but think a few other changes would have to be made to cure the understeer etc. Maybe he lost a few interior pounds too.

Here's an example of a GTI with 500WHP, so 600+ bhp from the 2.0tfsi isnt that far fetched, especially for a project/track car. "only" 25psi on that one.

A few home brew big turbo guys on that forum are doing 500whp as well. Big turbo, some decent rods and lower compression, viola!

I'm just guessing it'd suck major balls to drive in congested traffic though.

I would have loved to have seen it myself.

My friend is a very reliable source. He designs and builds hill-climb and track cars using all sorts of powerplants from Hyabusa's to Indycar engines. (He even helped out during the Top Gear 24 hour race). So, I have no reason to believe that he is giving me any BS. The car owner on the other hand....

However, why is it so hard to believe that 640bhp is not achievable? Aren't Evo's and Impreza's already exceeding this kind of output?

if it were true wouldn't it be publicised?
I have searched it high and low but to no avail so what would be the purpose of building such a car when you don't put it on show and you could argue he wants to keep quiet about it so why tell someone?

no logic to it at all.

Yeah thats my point, im not saying its not possible fro a 2.0 Engine, hell there are guys in the US like APS motorsport who made 1100AWHP, so around 1250BHP from a 2.0 liter EVO engine.. The 600+ hp bit isn't the part thats hard to believe..

Its the fact that someone is running round in the worlds most powerful 2.0T FSI and them and the company who produced it want to stay incognito

Isn't there a 750bhp one in scandinavia.... silver and black... i'm sure i saw a vid a while back........ prob's need a rebuild every 100 miles though lol

If the driver was good and knew the Ring well he could get under 8.45 in a standard S3 with stock power. Easy. I'm neither very talented nor that familiar with the Ring and I've done 9.20 in a standard S3. I'm sure my puny 342bhp S3 which I'm running now could get close to 9 mins - even in my amateurish hands.
So a talented driver would murder 8.45 in any S3 - never mind the disputes over whether 640bhp is true or not.

No doubt that TS racing mule is a clever piece of kit however for me, the real skill lies in having a monster set-up in a car that still looks like a `mildly` tweaked daily driver like JonnyC`s.

It almost doesnt seem that special to have crazy headline figures in a car with big scoops and no carpets/seats as its what you expect from tuners demo`track`car.

cheers
Paul

I think jonny´s car is a good setup with around 420hp.More power for the street in that type of car is pointless.I think if you go over 500hp the problems will come and it wont be fun to drive daily

LOL listen to you lot!!

I am Mat's friend, This was my third visit to the ring, but only the second time driving it.
If any of you have been to the ring you will find that it is the German/Belgain/Dutch tuners test ground, lots of very different cars where there. Look up http://www.pistonheads.com/porsche/default.asp?storyId=18901 GTstreet named desire, was testing there, Audi's own matt black R8.

The S3 in question assed me on the uphill section from Bergwerk to Kesselchen, which is where the power and torque comes in, my Impreza is 346bhp and 370ft/lb torque so pulls quite well up hill, but this thing completly blew me away!!!! came past me like I was stood still, My mate that was passengering said I was pulling about 130mph at the time and still accelerating, will pull 145 near the top if you dare!!! he just flew past me. When we got back to the Car park we went in search of this at the time all i knew is it looked like a S3. When found it we asked the owner a few questions but his english was not good, he said it was 650ps, he did not have sufficient english knowledge to tell us much more, to be honest he was not that friendly LOL think he was thinking ****** english get out of my face!!
Looking round the car it was virtually standard looking, but had Pirrelli corsa tyres on and was a good 50mm lower than standard. It had very big brembo brakes and discs looked like 8 pots front and 6 pots rear but could not be sure, it was also fully caged. The owner was probably mid 40's. The way it came past me I had no doubt he was not Bull Sh!tting. There where not stickerd what so ever on the car claiming to be from any tuning company.

PS sorry for the slow time round the ring but fast times come from experience and with 79 bends to learn i wanted to return in the same car I went out in unlike ohters!! We brought back to the UK 2 british lads the crashed there Clio 182!! dangerous but awesome place

still not convinced until someone post pics and all the spiel

Thats a transversely mounted 4cylinder, and not a 2.0T FSI.. Still impressive though lol!

No one is disputing the fact that it was very fast, and it probably did have the power that the owner was claiming, but I can 99% guarantee it probably had a turbo charged 3.2 engine and not the 2.0T FSI

650BHP out of the 3.2 V6 engine is old news, so I could easily imagine some crazy guy in Germany having that as a daily lol.. :)

to be fair he did not tell me which engine was in it but, it was a newer shape S3

People where claiming its not very fast as a standard S3 can do the ring in less than 8.45!! I suggest they go and try doing that sort of time at the ring and not on a play station LOL, at no point did Mat claim that the S3 was doing 8.45's he said i was. As I said he past me on the power part of the track!!

and as for not posting it on the internet are you real!!! the world doesnot revolve around the internet LOL some people actaully go out there and actually drive!! :p

there lots of very quick cars in motorsport that have never been publicised on the net!!

I did 8.46 BTG on the 20th october.

My S3 is standard except for Milltek TBE, HPP gen2, H&R springs, H&R anti-roll bars, EBC redstuff and dieselgeek short shifter.
Probably no more that 270-280 BHPs

I have a total experience of 14 laps at the ring.

I reckon that someone who really knows the track can easily beat that time with a totally OEM car, and also pass you on the uphill part because he will open the throttle years before someone with a limited Nurburgring experience will do.

With this I am not saying that you are slow. I am simply stating that no matter how fast someone is and how many HPs under his bonnet, there will always be someone faster than him, even with less HPs...
Especially at the Ring, familiarity with the track is essential.

Yeah, driven by a professional racer.

By the way, I bet the car was not his own...

Have you ever been there?

not having a go at you, or saying you were slow.
im just pointing out that this modded S3 may well have came past you at a rate of nots when you were doing an 8.45 so he may have pulled a low to mid 7, so considering the reno has only 230 bhp then that is impressive also.

I was passed by an orange Mk1 Golf whilst I was doing around 8:40 laps...this thing passed me into a corner, and by the time I was out of the corner, he was gone.

German registered, stripped and caged...on 185 wide tyres and with some form of NA 16v engine I'm led to believe - which means 200 ish BHP only and FWD.
He passed me like I was standing still.

At the 'ring, more than anywhere alse, knowledge is worth many 10s of seconds a lap.

Just because something hammers past, it doesn't mean it has monster power...maybe the driver is a local and has balls of steel?

True...

But the flip side is that as soon as anything interesting is spotted, it can be world-wide in minutes. It's unlikely something as interesting as a 600+ BHP bright orange S3 will have passed under every car enthusiasts radar...people speak, details get out...
