Finally done!
B7 RS4 360mm floating discs under 8 pot brembos at the front
B5 RS4 304mm(IIRC) discs and calipers at the back.

Goodridge Motorsport braided stainless hoses all round.

Wheels and new tyres on top of new brakes all done (would like to say it was easy but I had to get some assistance as EVERYTHING was seized!, caliper bolts, hub bolts, flanges, driveshafts, handbrake cable, every single brake fitting.
Arches are a little closer than they should be after the work done but it is going back in to rectify that.
just need to bed in the pads and get that stupid coating off. shouldn't take too long!

Anyway, actual first hand experience and not speculation for those of you thinking of fitting very large brakes on standard Master Cylinder.
pedal is solid, right there, no huge travel or sponginess at all. very nice modulation compared with stock, even on bedding in.
rumours that the stock M/C won't support 8 pots and larger rears is does not hold up in this case.

running EBC yellow stuff which may prove to be too hard in the long run. we will see. definitely inspires a bit more confidence when hot. old ones scared the pants out of me when hot!

Part list for those planning a winter brake swap.
for a B5 A4 (non S4)
- 2 S4/RS4 front uprights (preferably with new bearings)
- 2 front S4/RS4 front drive shafts (only for the outer CV, fit this to you exisiting drive shaft and inner cv combo)
- 4 Calipers (any combo of B5/B7 S4 and RS4 calipers will now bolt on to your uprights)
- New hoses for appropriate brakes (they are longer in all cases)
- New fluid, flush and replace

with a bit of shopping around and selling of old bits I reckon I have spent less than a grand on all four discs and calipers with new pads, hoses and fluid.
I would struggle to do that with new standard bits!

I did have to stick some labour on top as I ran out of time (MOT expired unexpectedly 3 weeks ago!)

it will weigh even more in a couple of months when I replace the puney Ko3s with a GT2871 attached to a forged 2l 20v block ; )

brakes first, then engine.....baby steps.

they are a bit bling but I got the whole lot for less than £800. (except the new front pads and new uprights). other than the stock B5 Rs4 system, there isn't anything else that doesn't require an adapter for that money that will give that kind of performance.

I am planning a trip with two mates to the 'Ring in the summer....if it ever gets off the ground! will need all the brakes i can get there!

ever see the cartoon where the driver puts both feet on the brakes, wheels lock up and the road gets pulled up behind him like a big carpet!

they look really cool! i would love breaks like that. Im getting some grooved badboys shortly so they look and perform a little better than the standerd 1s!

:D looks impressive.

I have to wonder how required brakes that size really are though...

I guess it is a quattro and does weigh quite a lot.

Also the rear RS4 B5 disks are 312mm according to wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RS4#B5_Brakes.2C_Wheels_.26_Tyres

Coz they stop you quicker??? look better!! dah!

lol

Blimmy they look even bigger than mine..... will have to let me know how the pedal feel is, i didnt really notice any drop on my setup.

apparently rock solid. and that is with two of the braided hoses missing (rubber ones in place).

gets tyres on and geometry done tomorrow......be doing endo's by lunchtime!

Yep i have braided lines on the front and rubber on the rear, the pedal is awesome. You will have fun with them once they are bedded in

Damn I wish I had the money for those!

will be uprating the brakes on my s4 this winter, quick questions, can you buy the braided hoses separately? ie just for the back. is it best to upgrade the back at the same time as front? will be fitting 330mm discs with 6 pots will it be overly front biased? is there a load compensator on a 99 b5 s4?

I can make you up any size and any format for the goodridge motorsport braided hose.
they are made up from servicable parts unlike the cheaper fixed length swaged end type.

I figure that with twice/four times as many pads on the front I will be repalcing them less often....unless i get carried with them!

how does price compare with goodrich?

very favourably.
6 Goodridge Motorsport braided stainless hoses for a B5 Quattro come in around the £190 mark all in. (not sure if the 2wd is 4 or 6 hoses)

1 front hose for a B7 caliper from Audi is £28!

the performance difference is significant and if anything gets damaged on teh goodridge hose, you just replace the damaged part, not the complete hose, they are completely servicable and fully anodised items.
They are also fully rotating with inbuilt swivels. the OEM ones are fixed.
means you often have to take the caliper off to fit so you can rotate the caliper around to stop the hose twisting!

I have had some Goodridge A4 quattro brake lines sitting at my house for a little while now.

Will hopefully get them fitted on friday. Was not expecting to notice much difference but maybe will. I bought them because at my last MOT the said one line had some wear but not enough to put as an advisory. Cost me for under £70 off eBay.

thats a good deal.
they won't fit the larger RS4 brake upgrades though as they are a bit short

so for someone wanting to equipt a b5 s4 with b7 rs4 front brakes and b5 rs4 rear brakes what would the parts shopping list look like for that?
would i better of going b5 rs4 all round??

Depends on what you want to spend.

The B5 RS4 setup is cheaper and pads can be had for around £20-£25.

The RS4 B7 is a better setup with 8 pistons but the cost of getting them and the cost of pads (£150) is also a factor.

You will need for the front
B7 RS4 Discs
B7 RS4 Callipers
B7 RS4 Brake line
B7 RS4 Carriers

Rears would be the same just all B5 RS4 rear parts

go for B7 S4 rears as an alternative to the b5 rs4 rears

some carrier plates and B7 S4 discs and you are good to go - 300mm for the rears which can be picked up pretty cheaply

b5 rs4 rears are bigger than 300mm and I would imagine cheaper too with all the RS4 b5 crew changingto B7 parts

b5 s4's are 256mm at the rear rs4's 312mm

s4 discs are about 30-40 quicd each new

my RS4 discs were £25 ;)
am sure they will be more next time round but that won't be for a while

phaeton discs using B7 RS4 bells look a cheap alternative to B7 RS4 discs

might also be worth looking at bells and rotors from Wilwood or similar. You probably find the rotors themselves wouldnt be too dear it'd just be the costs of getting the bells made up the first time round.

Wow, I'd be happy with a working ABS system.

That setup looks awesome JCB. I think if I eventually get a b6 or b7 TDI q there maybe some upgrades involved but as for now 'stinky' just needs kept together.

Question though...I suppose it comes down to driving style... is there much of a noticable change in tyre wear with the greater stopping distance? Would it help with beefier front suspension to take up the G-load when the anchors are applied, (for handling etc..) just curious....

always helps to beef up suspension.
can;t comment on tyre wear at the mo as the tyres are new.
I expect it may increase waer slightly but unless you live on the nordschleife then you drive accordingly.
think my tyres wear from cornering more than braking tbh
