Not sure about internal differences but the way they drive is quite different. 170 is quieter, more responsive, pulls cleanly to the redline. Acceleration can be quite savage in the 1st 3 gears :)

I'm talking about the 'old' 140 & 170. The new 143 is much quieter than my 170 but obviously still not up there performance wise.

I agree completely. I've had both a 140 and a 170 and the 170 is much the better engine. I've driven a new cr140 and it was much quieter but I have yet to drive a cr170 to compare.

Bez - what plate are you buying?

As you may have already deduced, there are 2 140bhp diesels and 2 170 bhp diesels - an older 140 & 170 (generally referred to as PD or tanks given the noise they emit!) that have recently been replaced by a new, common rail design that are in the current new vehicles. So knowing the plate might help people to give you the right answer.

loving my 170 quattro it goes like stink , my previous car was a 130 tdi a4 it was 100kg lighter but just does not have such a kitck in the back! the 170 feels more like a petrol hothatch (with extra mdrange!) than the 130. I can not coment on the noise but it does not bother me. If you can aford the 170 go for it!!

im lookin at 05 06 plate the new shape with the big grill , the plan is to get it remaped ,full exhuast system and w.e else i can do to get more power out of it , because i want the 140 , i want it to be quicker than 170, looks like it might be a trip to see my mate at audi . if any1 knows tho , let me know
thanks guys for your knoledge

You could start with the 170. Your already nearly at 140 remapped figures as standard then.

Admittedly there has been a few issues with the DPF on them, I haven't had any with mine but its still making me wary of whether to risk remapping it or not...!

I get lots of problems with my DPF. I had to call the RAC the other day as I lost power in the RH lane of the motorway overtaking another car. Had to pull in and drive to the nearest garage. ****** dangerous as I had another car right on my ***.

RAC guy said the DPF hadn't cleared because I was in the wrong gear or driving too fast for the filter to clear. Apparantly it needs 2000+ RPM (3k preferable), be travelling over 40MPH but not over 70MPH.

Anyway its ****** ridiculous and I'd warn you against going for diesel with the DPF if you live in London. If I'd known it was going to be like this I'd have waitied for a petrol.

There`s lots you can do to a PD140 engine. At present i am at around 330-340 bhp @ flywheel and 490 lb torque. In the next twelve months with my new set of mods i am hoping for 400 bhp.

ive currently got an 08 2.0tdi as a courtsey. How can you tell which is which (140/170)? would be interesting to know.

Or i could just ask them

There is not much difference in hardware between the 140 and 170.
According to ETKA, the CR-170 has different part numbers for the following.

Turbo
2 different intercooler boost pipes
Flywheel
DPF
EGR cooler gasket

Not sure if the same applies to the older PD unit.

Can't remember if the 170 has larger front brakes, will check later this evening.

Ta for the info. Its a 170. very quick it is as im used to a 110 8L.

want one

benr - check in the boot under the spare wheel for the sticker with output on. 170 also has chrome tailpipes.

Biggest difference between 140 and 170 in PD form is the 170 uses the piezo injection system as used on the V6 CR engines. This makes it quieter and smoother.

I'm currently in a 140 PD and it is very noisy compared to my 170.

Are the chrome tailpipes on the PD as well as the CR 170? Also is that the only visual difference between the two? PD I mean..

Mine is a PD 170 and has chrome tailpipes. The 08 s line 140 I have on loan doesn't.

/Hi

What year / monthdid they change from the PD to the CR engines?

Do they have different engine codes ?

Cheers

Ian

Audi changed production of the A3 from PD to CR engines for the 2009 Model Year which started on 1 June 2008 although production of the CR diesels did not start until around September 2008.

The engine codes were changed. The 140PD was BKD or BMM and the 170PD was BMN. The 140CR is CBAB and the 170CR is CBBB.
