A6 LED retrofit installed!

I think we might need something like an R8 to keep up with Bowfer's bike.

Bowfer - What's the 0-62mph and top speed of your bike.

The R8 is given by Audi as 0-62mph 4.8secs and a top speed of 187mph.

Would we stand any chance?

They don't tend to measure bikes in 0-60 terms, because it's over so quickly.
But, as a guideline, it would do 0-60 in about 3 seconds and 0-100 in about 6 seconds.
Standing start 1/4 mile is the most popular yardstick, which would be around 11 seconds and 126mph.
Top speed, just shy of 160mph.
Mine is just a 600cc too.
Go up to the 1000cc and you're looking at 10 seconds to 140mph.
In other words, even an R8 would be a speck in the mirrors.
One of the car mags (think it's CAR) do an annual car v bike test.
See if you can find this year's, as the R8 was included.
The bikes obliterated them all, even 10 year old bikes deliberately bought for £1500 by the bike magazines, to demonstrate the difference in cost v £'s spent.
In fact, the R8 wasn't even the fastest car.

And what would be the 140-0 time be? :moa:

Quite quick if you hit something stationary, for the bike anyway. If you're the rider just pray for a soft landing. Bikes are great, I just dont have the "kahunas" for it any more or perhaps it's the realisation that I am mortal with responsibilities.... Hats off to you bikers. :hi:

got any pictures of the install?? and or what you used to fill the gap after you took the grill out to fit the DRLs??

Personally I think if the led's were sat back slightly they would look a hell of alot better, they seem to overpower anything else on the car, I'd like to see them sat back maybe an inch or 2 under the lip to see what they look like then see if it takes to much light away or creates a nice glow in that area, problem is the fogs wont fit if sline/s3 as they're rounder where as the sport versions are flat on one end huh.

Did you wire direct via a switch or inline with a headlights pulse.

I wander who would come off best after a little love tap to the rear wheel?;) Joking..

Seriously though, dont get yourself in such a little tizz about LED DRL's, personally I dont like them on most cars, on the R8 I think they look stunning, but that looks pretty special anyways..

The lights look good but the ABT and quattro badges just look really wrong where they are.

I have to admit I'm not a fan of the ABT front to make look like the facelift, but everyone to there own I guess.

I dont mind the front end just the badges look like a bit of stuck on tat to me.

yeah not keen on the badges but would definitely like to find out more oabout the DRL mod???

do you have the part numbers for all the bits you used?? DRLs and switches etc??

Hi can you tell us how wide that LED section is in the front grill so I can tell if it will fit on the front of my TT. I know that they're supposed to be roughly 52cm long but wondering if there was any chance of shortening them somehow for other car applications. Great job by the way!! :)

Like it, but still think using the drls from A6 is the way forward especially if you can use all OEM switches etc. Still hoping Von Maximo will add to this thread with all the info!

Naresh,
Have you tried giving Vagpart in Swindon a call? they have the A6 Drls so sure they would be able to give you all the info.

Yeah I was thinking of giving them a call but then came across this post so thought that Von Maximo would reply with the fitting guide/dimensions etc.

Hi

Can't really give much of a "How to guide" as it's pretty simple to understand but a bit more difficult to do in practice aint for the faint hearted. It means adapting the bumper to make them fit. There’s no room for ****-ups as one wrong cut and you’ve F@*ked your bumper.

This is the unit itself:

Obviously you’ll have to remove the bumper. Then cut out the brackets that hold the Fog lights in place (No going back now!) and cut an extra length in bumper to accommodate the length of the DRL’s. If your good you’ll cut the bumper to the same profile as the DRL’s (Looks a lot neater)

Then you’ll have to manufacture some brackets to hold the DRL’s in place.

I would also suggest getting a pulse width modulator that will automatically dim the DRL’s when you put main lights on otherwise you’ll blind everyone at night as they are extremely bright on full power. I got mine from this guy:

Hope this helps

Great stuff, Thats a real big help. Did you run into any big problems with the wiring? are you running them off a seperate switch or is it possible to use the original (or possibly one of the new TT switches with the DRL button?

Have you filled the space under the DRLs with anything such as mesh? i was maybe thinking of trying to utilise the old fog grills too then just mesh off any additional space.

No real problems with wiring. Originally ran the signal and power feed direct from the side-lights but kept on getting flashed at night due to their brightness so bought the control unit that takes a signal from the main/dipped light and dips the DRL's brightness accordingly. No real need utilise any switches unless you manually want to turn the on/off

Originally I did use mesh to fill the void left from taking the fogs out but since taking the original photo's I've adapted the original foglight surrounds. I'll try and take a few more pics today

The only annoying thing about this retrofit is I do get the occasional flash from some prat shouting "Your fog's are on!" with a reply from me "Fog off!"

Yeah I was thinking of giving them a call but then came across this post so thought that Von Maximo would reply with the fitting guide/dimensions etc.

There are some more images on here which might help.

Thanks guys thats a big help... i am a little put off by the cutting of the bumber and chopping out of the original fog supports myself case i F@%# it up so still in thought at the moment... think it looks awesome though, it will be interesting to see Von Maximos pics with the original fog grills used as this will probably be the deciding factor for me!

Hey Steve,

As requested pics below using modified fog grills. The bottom image shows the DRL's at reduced brightness for night driving

Now that looks mint! Have dropped you a PM too as my mind is made up.... need mine doing too..lol

DRLs and TT switch arrived today, light switch which is fitted already.

Think i am going to have a transfer made up that says DRL and put it on my TT switch, then was thinking of using the old fog wiring so they can be turned on and off but still have a feed from the headlights so they dim when the headlights come on.. that way i can chose to have them on or off and not worry about dimming too.

Hope to get this mod done on my week off at the end of October and will post some pics after that.

Well have finaly got around to doing this mod too (pictures will follow).

problems we encountered were :
The position of the screen wash bottle and the horn.

We overcome these by taking of the nut on the front of the water bottle and putting in a spacer so it is set back at an angle. The horn we just turned upside down and refitted so the horn sits on top of the bracket (which snapped so needed a new one!)

Only other drama is that i have wired these differently to Lee - Von Maximo (again thanks for all the advice and info Lee) to make use of the fog switch - basically the DRLs can be turned on and off just like the fogs, When on side lights the DRLs are on full power then when i switch to main beam they dim, i would like them to come on bright again on full beam though... as for the problem, because we used the fog switch and cant turn off the feed via VAG COM as its needed, we currently have a right and left fog light warning on the DIS.

We are hoping to overcome this by using a resistor, relay or re wire in a different way unless anyone has any ideas of how to get round this and stop the warning being displayed.

As for the fit itself its not for the faint hearted! but i think its worth the trouble.

The one other thing is the DRLs give out a pure white beam making the standard headlights look cream :-( apart from a HID system does anyone have any ideas about pure white bulbs???

any help is appreciated and i will post pics once i have a min.

Just a few snaps to go with the ones Lee has put on here! we are tyhinging about moulding Carbon Fibre to Fill the space the Fog grill now fills!

Your thoughts and coments welcomed! I know this mod wont be everyones cup of tea...........

A very nice n' neat job done mate. Will look forward to seeing a pic with it all together and working.

Love it, so want to do this mod.

Can you show us some pics of the rear of the bumper to show how you mounted them?

If i was to have it as an on off mode with useing the fog light wiring and switch, is it as simple as unplug foglight and plug it into the back of the LED strip?

Von Maximo has some pictures earlier in the thread of how they are mounted!
I just didnt use brackets, just a fast setting epoxy. Once every thing was cut fitted and set any slight space was filled with black waterproof silicone it all looks soooo OEM you wont believe.

As for the Plugs! the fogs are two pin and the DRLs have 3. Lee has his set up so as soon as the car starts the DRLS are On full. I have mine wired into the Fog switch so i can turn them on and off. By using the PWM they dim when you switch on headlights, and i hope to be able to over ride that so when i switch to full beam they come on full too.

Because Lee has his wired in direct and not using the fog switch he was able to disable the fog feed using VAG COM. for me its not so simple and currently looking at ways to stop DIS from showing the fog bulb warming!

Looking at a resistor or relay option at the moment to rectify the problem. other than that i think the way i have them wired in is spot on with no hassle of getting flashed by oncoming traffic!

Ok, im not very technical, so not much of that makes sense to me.

If i was to mount the lights, would you be able to help/complete the wiring etc for me.I would want it exactly as yours is currently wired. Obviously i would be happy to pay you to do this?

Do i need just the DRL's or the connection kit aswell?

Also, did you bond the lights straight to the grills? or bond them to the bumper?

I had my local ICE dealer help out with wiring as they have all the test kit! took them about 20mins to run all the cables and sort out feeds and test it, the only problem now is the DIS error! which i am sure we will sort on thursday!

Where are you located?? PM me if you like and i will mail more pictures too.

We bonded the lights to the bumper then fitted grills and mesh to fill the void that was left. i will put two close ups on here in a min!

I live in London and Leeds, so both miles away from Bristol...ohh well, maybe the extra pictures will help.

Any instructions, with pics on how to do the wiring would be a massive help :)

I know im been cheeky, but just love this Mod.

My Lamin-x has arrived, so just need to get the optic grill and complete the s6 lights :)

I love it :) I don't have the guts to do something like this - DIY is not my strong point, and what I know about auto electrics i could write across a fibre optic cable!

Shame I dont live near Bristol! :)

Is that snow you have there or just frost?
