Rough/Lumpy Idle When Cold

Hi guys,

I know this has been talked about a few times, since i bought my car i've experienced lumpy idleing whilst the engine is cold, once i've driven it for about 20 minutes it ticks over without any problems. i took it back to the dealer i bought it from on several occasions and they said that the fuel tank was full of water, so they emptied it out dried the injectors etc, the problem was still noticable, anyway recently a friend of mine was having the same issue and he took it to IVC in leeds and it turned out to be the glow plugs, i took mine down and they hooked it up to the diagnostics machine and no fault codes were found, anyway i was just wondering if any of you have had this type of issue and actually got it fixed? its booked in for the 20th, they said if it is the injectors i could be looking at around £1800 for a new set, so im just trying to get an idea of what it could be to prepare myself for the ££££££ bill?

It's a 2.0 TDI 140Bhp by the way

I take it that the coolant temp sensor has been checked, if not it is a straightforward job to change it and the sensor is only about £25.

The sensor went on my 2005 2.0TDi.

Would that not trigger the engine management light and show a fault on the diagnostics software? there are no signs of a faults, just the irratic idleing when cold also you see the rev counter fluctuations as it happens.

It is possible that it wouldn't as long as the temp returned was with in the specified expected values.

The Engine Temp Sensor is also very very closely linked to the Thermostat Sensor which i'm incidently changing after I change the Engine Temp Sensor but still getting problems.

Again, small job but one that needs to be done.

when its running rough, do you get excessive smoke?

Mine's been doing this for some time now, its going into the dealers on Friday but they seemed to suggest injectors would be looked at

Hi guys,

Just thought i'd let you know that the lumpy idle has been fixed on my car, took it to IVC - the specialists in Leeds and it turned out to be the valve timing was out. Jobs a goodun!!

isnt your car a petrol? I know the diesels have them (sorted one that was leaking) but i didnt know petrols had them.

Just thought id add my tuppenceworth,
I have a 2006 sportback 2.0tdi sport that had the same problem, felt like someone was shaking the car very slightly and the revs would dip slightly then return to normal and then repeat,and like you say after driving to work 15miles (20mins) away all was ok,
Took my car to ayr audi who told me it was dirty fuel...blah blah....to cut a long story short after several visits to the same dealers they told me it was the exhaust cam??? Apparently this fault used to be on the audi workshop computer but was removed!!,
I only know this because the technician called me to tell me so,
Apparently he noted this fault in his notebook and how to fix it, forgive me for not remembering exactly what he said but apparently he loosened off the cam and rotated it(cant remember which direction) by im sure he said 1mm????(i would have said it was moved in degrees but what do i know, he fixed it anyway!!!)
The point is i was blown away that he called me to tell me what he had done,
and that he was now happy with the car, and right enough the car has not had any probs since and it was all done under warranty
