Supermarkets Slash Petrol Prices- Asda and Morrisons at 99.9p

This is the first time since last December that petrol has been under £1 in the UK, with unleaded going over 120p a litre and diesel over 130p during the worst of this year's price rises.

Marc Bolland, Chief Executive of Morrisons, said: "The price of crude has fallen in recent days and, yet again, we're passing this on to our customers.

“We’re taking the lead again in cutting fuel prices and taking unleaded back below a pound a litre."

Saw 99.9 in Town on the RingRoad@BP in Birmingham, my local Shell@Shirley Triangle is 101.9 with Sainsbury's opposite matching it and BP 100 Yards down the road on the otherside is still 105.9!

Its about time we got a cut almost ( I say almost!! ) as quick as the price of oil dropped. Time after time they increase it as quick as oil rises but dont reduce when it goes down, a sign of change??? we will see. I agree with nilz18t better when super goes below £1. Now lets see road tax drop and insurance too, then back to happy driving times

I drove past BP today, still stands at 106.9p, Asda at 102.3p according to Petrolprices.com.

When gas/electric bills go up these energy companies claim that rises in oil prices are to blame. Now that oil prices have declined I hope this will drive down gas/electricity bills, which I doubt will happen!

Price drops all around in Solihull when I drove past them, unleaded prices are Tesco's@103.9, Shell(Shirley Triangle)@99.9, Sainsbury's@99.9, BP@101.9.
Why BP continues to be more expensive than Shell over the road and still has a stream of customer's queuing up for fuel is beyond me?! The British are forever moaning about fuel prices above all else, with the current market also, you would have thought every penny counts! A simple boycott for a few days from BP will soon have them dropping prices, but driver's are too lazy to turn the car around for Shell over the road.

I saw something which mildly amused me today... I was filling the tank with Morrisons' bargain diesel again this afternoon, a chap rocked up an adjacent pump and started to fill up, stood there in his full Texaco uniform! They're over the road and 8p a litre dearer!

Yes, supermarket fuel is cheaper because it is poorer quality. The fuel is indeed the same but supermarkets dont add the same quality of additives. Wouldn't put it in my car.

I've read on in the news earlier than fuel prices are going to continue to drop until January, and I've also read that Opec(sp?) is reducing oil production in a bid to increase oil prices since the world economy has reduced the price of barrel's of oil to it's lowest since 2006 or something?

Super Fuels

Many of the large petrol companies have launched 'super fuels' - petrols and diesels that have a higher research octane level. These fuels are said to increase power in many vehicles, deliver less pollution than regular fuels and help to maintain a cleaner engine. Amongst these 'super fuels' are Tesco's Super Unleaded 99 Octane petrol, supplied by Greenergy, now sold at many stations across the UK and also BP's Ultimate 102 Unleaded which is currently the most advanced, high-performance petrol you can buy on UK forecourts.

Using Super Fuels

One of our users commented that using higher octane fuel than your engine requires actually gives no benefit and may be a waste of money. This is because virtually NO engines require 98 RON over 95, and the market for 'super' fuels seems to be based on people's misunderstanding of octane ratings and the placebo effect of filling up with 'more powerful' fuel - making motorists think their engine is running better in some way.
What do the fuel companies say then, to justify the "increased power" claims for the super grade fuels? Some companies say that while all fuels contain cleaning additives, 'super' fuels contain more or better detergents to keep the injectors cleaner than standard fuel. Others say the fuel is a few percent denser which gives slightly more power per litre. These benefits may be marginal though in comparison to the extra cost involved so it is worth ensuring that your engine will actually benefit before filling up.
Some engines actually do need higher octane fuel, such as race engines with very high compression and some turbocharged engines, such as the import version of the Nissan Skyline. Also, a few vehicles, such as the new BMW K1200R motorbike, can sense knock and adjust their engine tuning to take advantage of higher grade fuels. Another user commented that the 2004 BMW 330 also does this, according to the driver's handbook it makes 231 BHP on 98 octane and 221 BHP on 95. This ability is apparently widespread amongst German performance cars using Bosch / Siemens electronic engine controls.

Actually they will until the new year at least. The petrol price lags the oil price, as people typically buy oil for delivery in 6-8 weeks time. So the oil that is being bought at $65/bbl or whatever right now will only make it to the refinery in 6-8 weeks time. It spends virtually zero time in the refinery before it is on it's way to the forecourt - maybe the whole process could take a week.

Therefore, you have to think what the oil price was 6-8 weeks ago, and the petrol prices now reflect that price. The oil price has dropped further since then, so I can only see it going down. I think the price will be below 80 ppl (for petrol) by Christmas.

Diesel is a bit different, as there is still a supply-demand problem there too. There is not as much spare production capacity for diesel (if any) compared to petrol, so it trades at a premium as a result. It should still come down, but short of any major European refinery modifications it will still be more expensive as long as demand stays about the same. Of course, should diesel demand (haulage, shipping etc.) fall away with the **** falling out of the economy then there should be more diesel on the market and the wholesale price should fall. Whether the retailers will let on about that is another matter though...

Im driving so little these days but I filled up first time in a month the other day. £1.02/litre for super at a small local petrol station. Cant complain really.
