What are the Best Tyres For S3

Needing some new shoes for the S3.
Looking for good all round performance, dry and wet (its Aberdeen afterall).
Any recommendations? Will be 18 225 40 size Im after

I'm thinking:
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric
or
Bridgestone Potena RE050

but what about

Toyo Proxes?
Michelin Pilot?
A.N Other

Any experiences with any of the above would be welcomed.

I had a set of Pirelli P-zero Nero Rosso's put on the car yesterday and looking forward to driving it today !

I did not have a choice of tyre but I'd guess by the reviews via my-tyres they are very good - any views, does any one run these??
 
When the S3 was first tested I believe the P6000's were what made the S3 perform the best, I have them on mine and it grips and grips in the dry. Not fantastic in the wet though but I dont see the fun in giving it some in the wet.
 
Tyres have been done to death on here...all the above seem to get good reports although someone recently complained about the assymetrics (search). A good cheap alternative is the Falken FK452's which I am going to try next. Look about and they can be picked up for £60 a corner.
 
i have michellins sport ps2 all round. they are quite good. improvement over the original pilot sports. less road noise and good grip wet and dry

I replaced my pirelli's with Falken FK452's and they had better grip.Wasnt on an S3 though.
 
Just been quoted for fully fitted:

Goodyear Asymetric (I think these the same/replacement as/for the Eagle F1?) £114 each
Michelin Pilot Sport 2 £137 each

presume i need tracking seen to once the new tyres have been fitted?
 
i got two michelin pilot sport ps2's and tracking for about £240 the other day
 
I had a set of Eagle F1's and they were mint in all weather, now running Toyo T1R's and would rate them as a 8.5/10 very good just not as good in the wet as the Eagles.
 
thanks for your info folks.

reckon ill leave the tracking for today seeing as its not desperate & get that done when it goes into a garage for an insurance inspection in the not too distant future i.e. tomorrow.

whys it being inspected i hear you cry? well some tubaloop decided it was a sublime idea to cut across lanes mid rounabout and bash into my front passenegr side this morning. thankfully it looks only cosmetic, but bumper, wing and alloy are all tarnished/scratched. Boooo Hisssssssssss.:mad:
 
yeah sounds like i wouldnt need to just for tyres according to most on here, but probably a good idea seeing as it took a wee dink this morning -as that could have potentially screwed up the tracking?
 
I have Bridgestone RE050's on mine at the minute, I've been happy with them and will get them again. Plus they come as stock on quite a few fancy cars so that will do me.
 
I have Yoko's all round and i cant fault them at all in the wet/dry....
 
I have Pirelli's on mine just now. Cant remember the model but Im very happy with them!
 
Guys could do with a spot of advice.
Tyres i have on S3 now are 225/45 R 17 91V

Should i fit excat same size? ie 91V? or 94W etc??

What do you have fitted?
 
The letter at the end is the speed rating, i.e. V = 149mph and W = 168 and the preceding number is the load rating, i.e. 91 = 615Kg and 94 = 670Kg
So on an S3 any combination will do, but most decent tyres will be a W or even a Y (186mph). You can get GY F1's for around £80 in that size, which are 94W and no you only need tracking done if your previous tyres are showing uneven wear.
 
I read that it is recommeded to have tracking done when new tyres are fitted. This will help prolonged the life of the new tyres
 
Toyo t1r is my prefered choice, as good as Goodyear f1 in wet and better in the dry.

Also, very quiet on tyre noise compared to goodyear and some attorcious dunlops I had when i got it!

Used to be great prices on toyos, but getting pricier now. I have some falken on my mk2 on front and toyo on rear, and in the wet, the car is dangerous.....front just wont grip. This showed me just how good the t1r's are compared to a tyre that gets good reviews like the falken 452.

Best bit of advice is buy the very very best you can. Tyres are all that stops you from visting the scenery, so many people get nice blinging wheels then fit Nang Chung Ali Bongo tyres on them and the car drives like a ****. Mental if you think of it!
 
Advice Prielli P6000 anyone used them any good? seem too have a good overall performance! and a lot of people recomend them
the tyres i have on now are Federals (cheap) and road keeping seems very good (they have been on since i bought it). so hoping more expnsive will equal even better!
 
Anything will be better than the truck tyres you have on at the moment (apart from Dunlops)
 
I have Toyo's on my A3 Quattro and also had them on my old coupe... i find them exellent in all conditions and particularly good in the wet .. most noticable at speed on the motorway if i hit a large spot of standing water you can really feel it cut through the water rather than aquaplanning over the top of it ... my only concern is that they may wear a little quicker than some... my current set have done some 12,000 miles and i would say they are about half worn... dunno if thats good or bad
 
Ahhhh was just going too ask what ppl thought about Dunlop sport 9000? but i see andymac dosent like them. they get some good reviews.

Pirrelli rosso? yokahama advance sport?

Im not excatly racing so dont want too put 180 a corner but also dont want rubbish either!

Tyres are a ****** minefield!!!

just had 4x P6000 put on my leon 1.8t and cant fault them for the price to be honest.
havent had any wet weather since having them fitted but cant fault them in the dry
the good thing about Pirelli tyres is they last well as the compound isnt to soft also
 
P6000 have been around 20 years, old design but must be ok, not cuytting edge but solid I would say like Avon zz3's (very hard compound).

regarding dunlops, the grip will be OK, but when part worn, they can be horribly noisy really bad like wheel bearing noise/whine.
When I got my s3, I test drove it, pointed to the wheel bearing whine, owner agreed, showed me the receipts from audi who had repalced n/s rear bearing to no avail, so said it must be toher side. Was good to be able to negotiate £300 of the price straight away, when I had already spotted the dreaded sp9000 on board and knew before I even started it up, that it would whine like a Lehman Bros Merchant Banker on payday!!
 
I could wheelspin my old Golf GTi in 3rd gear in the dry with Dunlops on, and had to avoid steep hills when it was wet. Atrocious lack of grip, borne out by the fact the rears lasted 69k miles! I deliberately sat in the Golf with the handbrake on spinning the fronts for a good 20 minutes in order to trash them so the lease company would finally agree to change them. Not just poor, ****** dangerous.
Tyres can be a minefiled, but I always stick with Goodyear F1's or Asymetrics sourced and fitted by a local independent tyre fitter, found via blackcircles.com, but cheaper than their mail order price. Fulda are ****** good too (made by Goodyear) if you can find them.
 
When I first got mine it had some Brand New Wanli (Rip-off Yoko AVS tread):sadlike: that the dealer had put on, replaced them with Goodyear F1s which were much better. I've since put on Michelin Pilot Sport 1 which are by far the best tyres I have ever used on any car. The car feels solid/grippy rain or shine well worth the extra cash!!! If I hadnt got them I would have gone for the Parada's.
 
i used to run Michelin tyres but found they dont last long and also the sidewalls crack on them
 
I have 3 brand new Pirelli P-Zero Neros on mine (170 tdi Q) and one really crap "fullrun" i think the previous owner fitted it while waiting for his new car to be delivered! It is amazing the differance between a cheap tyre and a good one it sounded like a drive shaft was gone until i moved it to the rear! I will of course be getting a P-zero to replace it (may stick the fullrun on a rim to give me a full size spare if i get a punture mid weekend). I find the P-zeros great in the wet although the 4wd helps!
 
if you go by the auto express tyre test recently, you will find that the new version of the pirelli p-zero has come out on top (using a fwd golf gti mk5). so based on the test pirellis are 1st, vredestein 2nd, continentals 3rd and f1 asymetric 4th. i have only used f1s (both directional and asymmetric and was thinking of going to michelin ps2's until i saw the test results). i have to change 2 front tyres and am waiting for the quote for the new pirellis to come through. but to be honest i think you cant go wrong with most of the one's recommended on here...

Had those falken tyres on my car, absolutely amazing, espesh for the price! Unfortunately my camber angle was out on the front set and they wore away on the inside, so in order to get it through quickly i stuck khumos on the front, they aren't even half the tyre. The falkens where brilliant in wet and dry conditions, traction control was never had to kick in!

IIRC Andy, the Haldex allows upto 5% difference in rotational speed between front and rear axles before it thinks it's slipping, so you should be ok with different tyres front and rear, just hope they don't effect the grip balance between front and rear too much. The Conti's you had on isn't the best choice of tyre for track work, I had some before on my 19" equipped S3, the Avon ZZ3's I have are not too bad and are cheaper! Money no object, I would go for Yoko Prada's.
