Probably been covered before but I thought I'd post this up for info. Also gave me a chance to practice uploading photo's, so fingers crossed they come out alright.

I was having a much overdue tidy up in the garage the other day and came across an old cupholder I had left over from my previous A3 following a single to double din satnav upgrade. Thought I'd see if I could get it into my S3 as its something I really miss. I find the cupholder under the armrest pretty clumsy and the card holder on the dashboard pretty pointless so though it would be worth a go. As it was, turned out okay and something which I can't understand why Audi don't do from the factory. Anyway, here goes for some pictures of the install.

1. Firstly, remove the switch surround by gently pulling it away from the dashboard. Go careful as its pretty flimsy but its just clipped in place so shouldn't cause you any problems. You can see the clips in the picture below.

2. Remove the cardholder by inserting a couple of small screwdrivers in the top corners to release the locating clips whilst pulling at the same time.

3. A picture of the cardholder and cupholder side by side. As you can see, there's hardly any difference.

4. Unfortunately, because the fronts of the card and cup holders are slightly different sizes (the cupholder front is wider than the cardholder) you'll have to use the front from your cardholder as it's the only one that fits. The two fronts just unclip but a small bit of filing or grinding with a dremel is needed at the front of each side of cupholder for the cardholder front to fit.

5. Then, clip the front from the cardholder onto the cupholder. Another small bit of filing is needed to allow the cupholder to "lock" into place when it comes out of the dashboard. You don't need to do this but the cupholder will push down when you press on the top of it if you don't. It's probably best to skip this step for now, install the cupholder and see how you get on. Also, once it's all installed, you can mark where the cupholder needs to be filed as it's where it hits the switch surround. The bit that needs to be filed away looks like this.

6. That's it. Okay its got the wrong front but you know it's now a cupholder and it doesn't really get in the way of the radio or nav screen. Here's what it looks like.

All in all, really simple and a good little addition. Don't know how much a cupholder would cost new but looking on ebay, a couple of sold recently for around a tenner so pretty cheap to! I also noticed there seems to be a couple of different types, some are advertised as illuminated which would be a nice touch.

Hope this is of some use to someone!

Yeah thats funny cause I did this mod ages ago, then realised the unit wouldnt lock into open position due to as you've shown the surrounding trim blocks it, so I left it to get on with other mods for now, I did swap the fronts over aswell, well done fella, saved me posting any info, lol, but I think I will do it fully soon as fed up with no where to put my drinks & sticking under the armrest is ****** annoying.

Very useful indeed!

Been wanting to do this for ages. I'd read a thread somewhere it could be done but just hadn't got around to it. Will give it a go now.

****** coin/card try is useless!

Thanks guys.

very good - seen as your swapping them does one of you fancy selling me your old coin / card holder as the front of mine has a scratch across !

Cheers

Richard
PS thanks for the pic on how to remove it now as well !

He's used the front so it fits the trim surround.

Does anyone with ETKA happen to have the part number for the drinks holder?

Very useful mod, thanks for the info.

£22+vat from vagparts.com - so nearer £30 buy the time you add vat and postage.

Think I'll keep an eye out on ebay.

thanks for the guide, i'll be doing this mod although i do use the card holder for spare change and toll road wedge.

just bought one from ebay for £25 inc postage brand new.

thats a great mod matey, ive just completed fitting an led into mine, which now lights up the small drink logo on the front, will post pix soon

very nice... although, like Robin I use my card holder for what it was made for. loose change?! Why didnt they call it a change holder?
Anyway... might move my change to that little holder on the right of the steering column and crack on with this. ;)

i use mine for what it was disigned for - cards. i think the cubby on the right of the steering wheel is the change drawer - although I usually stick my wallet in there.

Cool...we now know where to look for your wallet...except it's probably empty, man of many mods!

Nice mod dude!

As said the coin/card holder is useless to me as i hate **** sliding around (especially coins).

quite the opposite actually! i have to use the cubby because it is too fat to fit in my pocket

If he uses his card slot for his poker cards, where does he keep his chips?!?! ;)

i normally put them in the armrest, although the salt and vinegar does tend to smell it out a bit. interestingly the two cupholders under the armrest are ideally sized to hold a large mcdonalds beverage and an ice cream sundae!

yeah, but if you stick a lge McD's coke in the normal cup holders, you cant get the old arm rest down... which means all your salt and vinegar will gather at the bracket whilst its up :(

I only need my cup holding, if Im holding the wheel, and then I want my armrest down.

i got my cup holder today, fitted it in 10mins, did notice on mine that the cover on the front sat too low into the dash making it look too 'sunk' into the dash, i used some paper folded up to push it out so it was inline with the other ESP buttons etc.

I think I better get this sorted... I had to drink my BK coke out of my cup holder under the armrest today when it fell backwards and leaked into the cupholder!

I found with those that you need to start the can before it goes in the helmet otherwise its spills when you move.

Once I started drinking the can, I finished it... so the hat was a bit of a waste of time. ;)

I only need a cup holder for fast food... everything else Id have in the car, would have a lid...

Glad the post was useful to some of you guys.

Not sure how to illuminate the icon though, I'd guess it's just a matter of fitting an led and taping into the wiring of a nearby switch. It'd be nice to see how you managed it bluequattro. I did notice that some of the cup holders on ebay were advertised as being illuminated so some might be fitted with an led from the factory!

8P0 862 534 C 5PR is fitted with a led, just as the original card holder is.

wish id known it comes illuminated guys, doh, i basically ran very fine cable through mine and attached it into my existing dash buttons wiring, i can get some pix up when i get my car back from audi.

I know this is an old thread but it's useful, and a brilliant little mod.
Miles better having a cup holder than that useless card tray.

Picked up a cup holder from ebay for £4, used an old file to trim down corners slightly (as above/below), and it all fits perfectly.

I keep coins for the car parks in mine as I never have the right change on me. I do miss the cup holder from my A3 though

nice mod but id rather have the coin/card holder than the cup holder lol

my cupholder is illuminated! Is that part of the ambient lighting pack then?
