Difference Between A3 3.2 & Golf R32?

Hi.

Been chatting to a couple of friends from work who drool over the R32 but I was arguing the fact that it's the exact same engine and pretty much even the chassis as the A3 3.2 V6.

Of course none were convinced saying the Golf is a much faster car.

So, who's right and who's wrong?

I'm pretty sure you're right. The interior is probably better on the A3, but I'd take the R32, which IMO looks better and you can get bucket seats. I think the R32 has a more fruity exhaust note too.

I think the comparison between the two is the same as comparing the 2.0TFSI to the Golf GTI... Apples and oranges really.

The Golf variants are a bit more in your face, more typical hot hatch styling and arguably more attention seeking motors. The A3's are more sports exec whereas the Golfs are more sports orientated in their set up.
I test drove both the R32 and GTi before buying my A3 and they just don't feel as 'nice'. The difference in price was quite obvious to me.
The GTI is a bit quicker and livelier then my A3 but i expected that. I'd imagine the same applies to the R32.
The more prestige & solid feel, lower stance, more aggressive angular styling, 4WD and better interior was worth the sacrifice in pace for me.

It's totally down to personal preference at the end of the day but purely based on performance it's the R32 for me.

well if your just looking for stat facts for your arguement,

the R32 0-62 is 6.5 manual and 6.2 DSG - 250 PS (246hp) @ 6300rpm
The 3.2 V6 is 6.4 manual and 247bhp @ 6300rpm


So you win... by 0.1 seconds... so long as they are in a manual

Audi A3 3.2 0-62 = 6.5, R32 0-62 = 6.2. I guess the A3 must be a touch heavier since they have exactly the same engine (both 250ps).

its the difference in DSG or non DSG it seems.

Id take the Audi tho... R32 stylings a bit taccy in my most humple opinion!

Yeah, I recon in real life if you put an R32 up against an A3 3.2 (if they both have the same transmission) then there would be millimeters in it.

I'd have the R32 every time - the noise outa that thing is sublime IMO.

I'd have to disagree with some of the comments saying that it is attention seeking - for me, the only real difference between the R32 styling and that of the GTI is the exhaust configuration and the alloys - in some instances the golf GTI's with the 18" Monza II alloys(especially the white ones - which, dont get me wrong i think look really well) stand out alot more and would attract more attention than the R32's, again in my own humble opinion. However, as alot of things this simply comes down to personal taste!!

I meant the styling og the Golf GTI and R32 is more 'attention seeking' than the equivalent Audi A3's.
I don't like the chrome grille surround or the centralised exhaust on the R32.... However it does look better in black than bright blue. Knocks it back a bit. But i guess thats missing the point lol.

Ahh got you mate - in that case i'd have to agree with you! I think that's one of the reasons why i choose the S3 over the R32, because it is slightly more understated. That coupled with the superior build quality of the Audi and it wasnt really a choice anymore to be honest.

Personally I love the look of the mkV R32, especially in blue. On a par if not nicer than the S3.

I still regret getting rid of mine.
Fast, loud and for a Golf, truly a good looking animal.
4 usable seats, nice spacey interior.

On the downside, its thirsty, very thirsty.
Funnily, the same engine in my TT is giving out another 5 mpg for some unkown reason.
Cleaning the multi spoke wheels can lead to suicide. I once spent 3 hours cleaning brake dust off them and had to be kept away from anything sharp for 6 days.

And if your a fan of turbos' its not going to be for you, you'll miss the lag.


They are on the other hand the used bargain of the century, just take a look at some of the prices on ****** on heads.
