Getting rid of the Egg Yolk Effect

Tried some Silvatec, better, but no where as bright as originals and their colour is orange not amber.

******. I got some of these today with a view to fitting tomorrow. I'll let you know...

And... if you look at the back of the Silvatec packet they say that the silver finish and bulb life is not guaranteed. I think that the Philips SilverVision should last as long as the original [Osram] bulbs. They are definitely brighter too!

Where can I find some of these "Philips SilverVision" bulbs for the indicator and side lights?

I'd just like to say that there is no way on God's earth that a human male with normal (ie not alien spindly sucker things) hands can get to the front indicator light fitting to change the bulb.

Robin. Explain yourself.

Yeah, you're right. The offside (specially with xenons) is a right ******. Got my hand stuck in the hole! I notice in the manual that they don't even give intructions on changing them now, only the daytime running lights. I can't see how you could get the side lights out either as they are a complete nightmare. P*ss poor design...

Perfect situation to put your love ones in good use??

HONEY! .... come here, I'll give you a backrub after you do this little thingy .... Trouble is though, do you trust your love ones ...

i had another bash at it yesterday and there is no hope in hell im getting my hands in that small space!!

my indicator ones from that ebay site you posted arrived last week and got them fitted no probs, thanks to you step by step!

thanks Robin!

I got the rears and the sides done but that was it.

(Word of warning! Very easy to scratch the paint when you remove the sides :( )

Robin,

How much an hour do you charge out for your freaky hands?

I did have a thought. I wonder if the Xenon units are actually smaller than the standard headlight unit?

anyone near cheshire who wants to borrow my hands then just gimme a shout!

i think you are all just a bunch of girls who can't take the pain of cramming your hand into a VERY tiny space along with losing some skin!

Looking at your pics again I think there may be more room around the back of the Xenon units. I took off part of the back of the lamp unit and disconnected what looked like the main power supply. Even then I could only just brush the back of the flasher unit with my finger tips.

i think i will employ my girlfriend to do this "mans" job - oh the shame!! :(

Just noticed that too. I could disconnect it, then I might even be able to touch the indicator unit, (maybe).

I'm sure that there is alot less room in the Sportback/TDi engine bay. I can hardly put my fingers around never mind my hand!!

exactly the same with mine

does anyone know if there are any screws below or to the side of the lights to remove them without having to take off the bumper?

I took off the cover (blue) and the cable thing (red). No way Jose.

Yup I have.

Did them a few weeks ago now, they are the offset pinned bulbs just like the front, i was going to do a guide on it but the handbook shows you how to remove the rear light so i thought a guide isn't required.

Right quick update

It seems like the front indicators cannot be done without removing the front bumper if you have standard xenons (ie. not xenon plus)

A good mate of mine (Alex2.0T)has got the standard xenons and there is no way i can get my hand into the side to remove the front indicator bulbs.

The xenon plus guys will have no problems.

If Alex decides to remove his front bumper to do the change i will do a guide on it for everyone else.

According to the workshop manual the correct way to change the indicator bulbs is, would you believe...

– Switch off ignition and take out ignition key.
– Remove appropriate front wheel.
– Remove relevant front wheel housing liner

– Turn bulb holder anti-clockwise and pull out of housing.
– Screw bulb out of bulb holder.

ah right in that case no front bumper removal will be required, that makes life a little easier!

Remove the front wheel! Wouldn't that ruin the tracking...?

No mate, removal of the road wheel has no effect on the tracking..;)

This is the way you need to get at it if you cant get at it from the engine bay. I did mine yesterday, there is no need to take the wheek off just turn the wheel to full lock. Then you need a small (short) screwdriver to undo 2 screws on the top half of the wheel arch liner. The wheel arch liner will then peel back enough to get your hand in and reach the bulb holder which you simply twist and pull out. Pretty easy really and only took me about 5-10 mins to do both sides! Looks so much better now! :icon_thumright:

bassssssssssssssssstard wish i knew this on saturday when we had all the wheels off on my car! oh well - ill just jack it up and have a poke!

i questioned my mate about how to get them out and he did suggest that way lol

If you mean for the side repeaters, then yup they'll be fine. If you want bulbs for the main indicator in the headlamp cluster, then you'll need some PY21 bulbs such as these

Yeah I should have said for the side repeaters. Cheers mate!

i fitted new silver indicator bulbs last week, was a piece of ****. 2 screws out the arch liner, have a fiddle (ooh err) and job done. i actaully find the A3 very very easy to change bulbs on. Try doing it on a mk4 golf, trust me, the front bumper HAS to come off.

I did my GF's Mk4 Anni and changed the indicator bulbs and i didn't need to take the front bumper off to do so............

I do remember it being a right **** to do but i never took the bumper off, unless they changed something to give easier access in 2002..........

Finally got round to changing mine last weekend. The trick with the drivers side is to remove the bolt holding the washer fluid bottle on and push it out of the way. Then if you un-clip the cable which is attached to the suspension mount and move that there is just enough room to get in there.

I am still bearing the scars from the ordeal but its made a massive difference.

The second part is what I would consider to be 'normal' procedure for changing an indiflicker bulb on any car...the first part just makes me think "christ ON A BICYCLE, audi even want you to go to the effing stealers just to change a bulb, and charge 5 grand in labour for doing it" :keule:

Its easier and less hassle to jack it up and remove the wheel arch liner thats for sure. I've got chubby digits and there is no way they are fitting into those corners in the engine bay!

Did anyone see watchdog a few months back? If you need to change the Xenon on a Megane you need to remove most of the front of the car! They were moaning its dealer only job and costs £350!

But shorly you can take a wheel off. Whats happens if you get a puncture? The wheel arch liner is only held in place by a few screws.

Can I just check that you're suggesting taking the wheel off, then the arch liner just to change the front indicator bulb?

If so there's no need to do that at all. You just turn to full lock to give you room, remove about 3 of the screws and put your hand through.
