how low should i go?

hi there, i boughts ackys black s3 last month, its lowered about 15mm but its not as low as i would like it for looks mainly. anyone have a picture of one lowered 50 mm so i can see what that looks like and has anyone got any personal experience of different ride hides specifically in the s3? also if anyone has any second hand springs give me a shout.

you wont find springs to go low enough they only go -25 or -30mm you will have to spend ££ to get coilovers on it then you could go even lower if you wish.
 
got quoted in halfords today for 50mm cobra springs for 120 quid!
 
venom are selling ap coilovers for the s3 for £350. this will take you plenty low enough
 
Cobra springs???? Don't subsitute quality for the sake of some cheap springs.

Aky's ride has the Koni FSDs if memory serves me right which is why it sits a touch high, you would be better of selling them and the springs and replacing with coilies if you want to go low riding.
 
cheers for advice so far, if i was to go down the route of changing the springs, would i definately need new shocks even thought they have already been upgraded? could the konis really be much beter for quality? surely a metal spring is just a metal spring?

no ametal spring is not just a metal spring they have certin spring rates and better or worse quality materials i wouldnt even contemplate the springs why not buy the coilovers as mentioned above for 350 then you could sell the konis and then maybe the coilies will only work out at 120 like the poor quality springs
 
There's more to it than that bud. The Konis are more for comfort IMO than looks which is why they are paired up with Eibachs. You would defeat the purpose of having them if you go for much shorter springs. Have a read of the suspension thread where Essthree and ChriS3 have put some superb advice for anyone wanting to go low. -50 is way too much and would cause more problems than its worth...
 
whats the difference in coilovers and normal springs? would i need to change the shocks with them on?
 
plus the sump pan is very low on the s3 so you will risk expensive engine damage if you were to ground out on it, just a thought for you

my last one was lowered 30 and give no bother and looked and handled great (see pic) , would u even say no to lowering it that much with for example cobra springs?

coilovers are a shock and spring combo that can be adjusted to your requiernments hight wise, if you get decent coilies then you an adjust loads more, therea complete replacment for your shocks and springs

cheers, i read that bit on suspension too so thanks for that too. you guys have helped changed my mind, perhaps from making a big mistake. so in conclusion, because i already have koni fsd shocks, if i go for 30mm cobra springs with them would that be an ok accopanyment?:uhm:
 
I have dropped 30mm with FSD's and HR springs.rides comfy...dunno about them Cobra springs though (never ever heard of em)

The only cobra brand I know is that Indian Beer... as for springs you are better of sticking with either H&R or Eibach. (tried and tested)

Go for the coilies mate, not being funny, but no point buying an S3 and then putting bad bits on it

Its like buying a Ferrari and taking it through your local IMO car wash!!
 
im not a cheap skate or trying to cut corners, just asking advice to see if they are adequate! ive heard good things about them, they are a german company and aparently make good quality stuff. coilovers cost anything from 300 to 1000, surely if you were to buy the cheapest ones they would be rubbish?
 
fitting Cobras would be like buying supermarkey own brand larger imo, if yoy go lower than 30mm there is no point in owning a S3 as it will be ruined imo.

making the wheel fill the arches with spacers is a better idea than slamming her to the deck. I don`t like spacers as they put more stress on wheel bearings but the results look good.

Go for some H&R -25mm springs.

I wouldn't bother with coilvers tbh, its alot of money and ends up ruining the ride anyway.

As people have said, the S3 isn't a car to be decked :thumbsup:
 
Cheap springs tend to be non-progressive, hard as hell and made of crap metal...they'll kill the handling dead. You'll end up bouncing along the road whilst having your fillings shaken out.

Stick to the proven springs by H&R or Eibach and you won't go wrong.

At -20 to -30mm you'll be fine...looks good, handles well and doesn't risk the sump IF you have uprated dampers. Mine had H&R springs and Bilstein dampers on and i'd buffed the low point of the sump around the drain plug...any lower and it would have cost me a sump - and more likely an engine.
Not worth the risk.
 
Can't beleive you want to change the setup already Neil. i thought it was pretty good - being my old motor and that. I think if you were to change it i'd go Bilstein coilovers and rear tie bars. whatever you do to lower the car more will cost a few extra quid as it doesn't have rear ties at the moment.

alright acky hows it goin ? loving the car, love the comfort and handling of the set up, its perfect, i just think cosmetically it needs lowered. is that definate that i would need to buytie bars?what would they cost? i was told because it has good shocks that i could just lower it 30 mm with good springs and that would be all? would the anti roll bars be affected in any way by lowering it? cheers
 
can't remember but think max is something like 25-30mm Maximum for the FSD's. I'd be tempted to buy H&R springs and leave shocks alone or go for Coilovers. Jason (Voorhees) will confirm whether tie bars are needed with that setup. Cost is circa £300 for tie bars and then setup costs aswell.

I'm not bad, got my beemer the other week. I'll post some pics when it has stopped raining and I've had chance to give it a scrub. Just needs a cheeky remap now coz its a lazy diesel.
 
good stuff, it will be a weapon with a good remap, ive decided to lower 30mm, been told it will be fine because of the quality of the konis etc, im just going to go for springs and forget tie bars unless it feels like it needs the,. cheers

i dont get this thing with NEEDING tie bars, my old s3 was lowered 30mm and never had any bother, handled great, passed mot no probs, are they an extra or what do you mean by i would NEED them? with coilovers would i need them too? how much are the coilovers? cheers
 
We say you need them because if you lower a car the gepmetery changes and the only way to correct this at the rear of the S3 is by tie bars.

The Weitec Hicon GT are normally £535 plus £12 postage, we're doing £475 delivered on the last set me have in stock.

what concequence (sp) does that have if you do it without tie bars in easy terms? how much can u do h and r springs for 30mm? cheers
 
If you don't have the tie bars then you can't adjust the rear camber. When the car is lowered then the inside of the rear tyres wears prematurely.
 
Hi mate, mines been lowered 30mm front, 25mm rear.
KW springs with Weitec dampers from Venom Motorsport
Running et24 at the front and et4 at the rear. Not got an issue with the camber and no uneven tyre wear even with such a low offset, doesn't rub on the arches either:o.k:
