Helicopters in the sky now around Essex to monitor your speed then what next little black box in the car I reckon no other country would get away with it!!!!

Don't get me wrong I don't agree in speeding but the whole thing is getting out of hand & just another money spinner for the goverment to cash in on the motorist again they want us all on push bikes !!!!

I have a bit of an issue with speed limits in general. The national speed limits are out of date anyway and are based on cars made in the 60's.
On motorways i think it should be 80, maybe 90 in the fast lane which would obviously be lowered dependant on weather (electronic signs).

On another note... I don't agree with councils setting deliberately slow speed limits on fast roads then filling them with speed cameras. Nice little earner i'd imagine.

I maybe 90 in the fast lane .

Come on, this is really bsaic stuff. There is no 'fast lane', only overtaking lanes. You should always be in the left-most available lane. I thought only women thought they were 'fast lanes'.

You can say I'm being pedantic but it's that little bit of misunderstanding which causes me so much grief on the motorway, people sitting in the outside lane because they think they're doing the speed limit.

the Rule is, if you CAN be undertaken, then you're in the wrong fricking lane.

Rant over.

Totally agree with this/

Also driving tests should be more difficult and the licences should be split into categories.

So the stupidest people with the weakest reactions should have licenses which limit them to small engined cars and B roads.

WHile the cleverest people with the best reactions would be allowed on all types of roads and maybe even subject to different speed limits.

why should we all be measured and enforced by the yardsticks set by the thick and ignorant?

Drivers on German autobahns seem to understand the 'move over to the inside lane' far better than we do which makes driving on the autobahns so much more enjoyable. Perhaps it's because a lot of their autobahn system has no speed limit and cars in the outside land do not take kindly to be blocked by slower drivers.

It's as bad as people who join the motorway, move into the middle lane and sit there all day even if there is nothing at all in the inside lane. Obviously totally incapable of changing lanes properly and safely.

I have to laugh at this thread :) I post a lot on Ireland's largest internet forum boards.ie and on their generic 'motoring' forum there's always people posting about how "Irish drivers just don't understand the overtaking lane, the British and Europeans are so much better than us" blah, blah :)

Now I come here to see the same stuff, "Oh we're terrible and the Europeans are better". I bet there's a forum in Germany where some guy is saying "Ja, they beat us in the war, that vas because ve drove too slowly to the front thanks to ze people hogging ze overtaking lane! Dumkopfs!"

Personally my experience of driving in East Anglia on the A11 and A14 is that when the roads are nice and clear people are more willing to pull back into the driving lane but if traffic is heavy, people sit in the overtaking lane knowing that if they move back in to the driving lane, they may never get back out again :)

Erm, yes i know how the motorway system works, i also know this is why at the best of times they're f**king horrible places to be at rush hour. How is it a good thing to have a free for all in every lane?! That attitude of 'get out the fricking way or i'll undertake you' is what causes problems. I always thought the road system including motorways worked from left to right, right being the 'overtaking lane'....Maybe i'm wrong? I'll admit freely if i am!
My point is, have a limit for each lane. Inside lane for crawlers, middle lane for example 50-70 then fast lane for a limit of 90 or whatever.
Obviously this is a very basic off the cuff idea and might not work in reality but it's my opinion!

what gets me more than anything is accidents are not all caused by speed how many times do you see people looking away from what they are doing chatting on phones etc drifting side by side !!! More careless drivers than speeders but of course hard to see them & fine them so speeding is far easier for the goverment to get there money like I said you wouldnt get away with all this in other other countries like America motorist here are totally ripped off in every respect.

Lol...that's why i'm seriously considering moving down to Suffolk, your roads are empty, dude, and some lovely country lanes too!

And to quote 'Helicopters in the sky now around Essex' - i bet they're tracking you guys coming out of AMD:busted_cop:...another good reason to move down there!:moa:

Most of the autobahns around here are only 2 lane. When I fly along 99% of the time cars move out of the way for me well before I get to them, even if they have only just moved out to overtake.

I hate driving on motorways in the UK. When I come up behind someone who is in the wrong lane and I want to overtake I don't get too close but I will give a quick flash of my lights, they then do one of 5 things:
  • Sit in the lane and ignore me
  • Sit in the lane and give me the bird
  • Sit in the lane and speed up as they don't want me to overtake
  • Move over and have a go when I overtake
  • Move out of the way, let me past and then move back into the lane
All of these are not answers in the highway code from what I remember...

I prefer town driving in the UK to Germany though. They have traffic lights here at nearly every junction. And they're all on timers not sensors.

I used to drop my girlfrind home at about 2am, she lived 2 miles away, I'd see maybe 4 cars the whole way but I'd be stopped by 7 or more sets of lights where I'd have to wait for literally nothing.

But anyway, I agree with speed cameras in towns. Not on motorways though and I think the fact that most motorways don't have them and the comments made by the coppers in Evo this month speaks volumes.

I will miss driving at 130mph everywhere when I move to the UK soon.

The helicopters in the sky never will be able to do you for speed alone, they will be able to give a opinion that a car is going above the speed limit and call in a traffic car to measure its speed.

People need to realise sometimes that it is not speed which is the direct cause of a accident its the speed which judges the severity of it. I for one would not like to be in a rear end shunt on a motorway cause someone hasn't noticed a stationary queue of traffic and then slams into it at 100mph. Cause let's be honest if the limit is 90mph then people will do more.

This is why certain limits are what they are to prevent serious injuries not saying that speed is a direct cause of a accident. Just look at the statistics of pedestrian accidents and how more likely they will live if hit at 30mph other than 40mph.

Jam/ ....When you picking up your S3 I want to see the piccies (-: ???

From Pistonheads http://www.pistonheads.com/speed/default.asp?storyId=18582

I think they will have the alibilty to use speed guns from above according to this

Hmmm

Only really states it is a automatic number plate recognition device really...ive certainly not heard anything like this and would have done to be honest!

Get the car tues afternoon mate, can't wait!

Costs something like £4000 an hour to fly so doubt it lol

Use the German speed limits. They vary depending on the road not just a 30, 60 or 70.....everywhere.

If drivers cannot get back out into the overtaking lane in heavy traffic they should learn how to drive !!

That depends where you're driving! Often on my daily M27/M3/M25 commute there just wasn't a big enough gap to get into, and if you did,you could almost guarantee verbals or heavy breaking! I figured it wasn't worth the risk most of the time, especially as most prangs/pile ups are outside laners!

im thinking stealth black cars are the ones to buy now :D . White is over

A helicopter can never be truely stable in its flight, even at a stable hover there is still some movement as any helicopter pilot will tell you they have to move the controls all the time constantly adjusting, how the hell could a radar be accurate and if they use the l20-20 then it will be laughed out of the sky!

In high speed pursuits I was told by a copper mate of mine that the heli can only provide support for the ground units to substantiate. A grand an hour won't include the pilots fee which will be of similar cost! An outrageous way of not tackling the real killers. The real killers are drug driving be that alcohol or otherwise. When they make a camara which detects that then fine but realistically we all know that catching people doing 35 in a 30 stretch is money making off braking distances set with 135 width tyres and more than likely drum brakes all round and a whole lot of smoke!

And the car front makes the difference if the pedestrian survives not the speed as such, and my argument is why aren't these people crossing in the right place I only cross the road when not at lights or a zebra crossing when there is no traffic about, having been to uni at Preston its a valuable skill staying alive crosing roads there!

Maybe we could tag people onto the car gps units if they have no reason to be alive we could get three points removed for speeding for getting rid of a lowlife :) hahaha!

and whilst you hold that thought for a moment think about the air ambulance which is run by charity...makes me proud to live in such a ******* **** society

rant over.

Strangely enough I donate to our local air ambulance and stated to the regional manager that it was a disgrace that such a vital service was left to charitable donations to fund. She replied that the local council had offered some small funding but had so many strings attached they refused the offer of help.

No doubt can you give the local coucil ******** a free ride in the helicopter or can you pick up the government minister to avoid the public.
