So I'm planning on replacing my oil pump next weekend (probably)..

I'm going to hire a workshop crane to support/lift the engine and use a trolley jack and some wooden supports to lower the subframe.

If anyone has done this before:-

What lifting tackle is best? I wanted to use the lifting eyes on the engine.

Can you get the oil pump out by just lowering the front of the subframe?

Any other tips/hints would be appreciated. Cheers.

Once the sump off the pump is easily accessable. Its getting that damn sump off thats the prob. Its a combo of dropping the SF and lifting. You would probaly get away with undoing all of the SF to Chassis bolts and dropping it down whilst its still connected to the arms. TYou will need to dropp the motor mounts off and the Box mounts too tho.

hmm i dont know if i even want to test my oil pressure now lol!

I've had a flick thru haynes and pretty much as byzan says , it recommends dropping the subframe although it doesnt mention removing the arms. It also only says to loosen the gearbox mountings rather than remove them completely

I'm kind of prepared for the work but it's mainly lifting the engine that I'm concerned about.. as I've got to hire a crane/hoist I need to make sure I get the right lifting tackle to fit our cars or it'll all go tits up!

Had a quote for £400.00 to do the whole job and when I add up hiring kit, the price of the pump and a days work.. 400 doesn't sound too bad!

Should I just stick it on the credit card?!?

RESULT!!!!

Just talking to a mechanic I know who runs his own garage.. mentioned doing the oil pump and he said he'd do it next week if I wanted.

Obviously I asked him for a price... £250.00 all in.

Booked in for next Thursday :yahoo:

Ha... said he's done a few before so who am I to argue.

Can get my remap booked in now too :jump:

New oil pump is in and the engine does actually sound smoother.. it was never 'noisy' but there is a definite difference.

Had a look at the old pump and the oil strainer/pick up was totally clear so I'm assuming the pump was just showing it's age.

Happy now anyway

I had mine done about 3 weeks ago now, new oil pump, pick up pipe, and near side cv boot £300 all in...
not bad although the mechanic friend of mine is a citreon specialist ...and 2cv racing champ may i add!..... and couldn't get the sump off, something to do with a bolt on the back of it and the flywheel being in the way?
And a bit worrying there was some small bits of green plastic in the pick up pipe

I remove the sump without lifting the engine, or completely removing the subframe.

You only need to lower the front part of the subframe, and remove the mount nuts (13mm x 2).

You do not need to lower the rear, or unbolt the tranny from the frame.

As for the engine, I simply support the front on an axle stand.
Just replaced the conrod bearings in my 1,9TDI, which I've sold.

My gran, god bless her soul, was a bit munched towards the end.

So my parents built a granny flat on the side of their house for her to spend her last days. Part of this required a crane/hoist to get her out of bed. After she passed-away, it made for an awesome engine-removal tool!

siena: interesting; where do you place the stand to support the engine when the sumps coming off?

I placed the stand right at the front of the engine, the snub-mount that's bolted to the front of the block.

Works a treat.

I guess you thought I meant I placed the axle stand under the sump, which is what's being removed?

I only ask, because you sounded a bit sceptical.

yer thats what i was thinking, if you werent holding it from above then the stand would have to be on the sump. I wasnt thinking about the snub mount bracket, but was thinking you might have used the waterpump housing or something. Cheers for the tip!

I'm going to try and get a pressure meter and test the pressure on mine, i dont really want to change the pump, especially as the engines done 170k and uses a Litre of oil every few thousand miles (the money would probably be better spent on a new engine), but at the same time i couldnt afford to have the engine fail and be without a car until i managed to get and fit a replacement engine. If the pressures marginal then i'll have to look at the funds situation and decide wether to replace the pump or the complete engine.

Got a few things lined up to do on it now... new engine and transmission mounts, engine breather pipe replacement, find and replace both rear boot cards and now possibly an oil pump!
