BMW E46 Copmact spoiler on a A4

It's been about a year since someone suggested I take a look at the BMW Compact rear spoiler as I wanted something with a larger profile then the M3 type. Well I have been hunting for one for some time and I did not want to spend £50 for one so I waited and £19 later I got a result of eBay and here's what it looks like after some trimming and shaping.

Did you have to trim it down to size or shape it or was it a straight fit?

I had first reshape it with heat but fixed it in the centre first then bent it to fit.

Next was to cut it and reshape it then paint all done.

Doc - How did you attach it to the centre whilst you were heating it? Is it drilled in or just stuck down?

1. You need to remove the underlining of the boot.
2. You need to mark on the spoiler the centre point of the spoiler with a pencil so that when you put it on the boot you can see it.
3. Now mark the centre point of the boot.
4 Line the spoiler up with the centre point of the boot and the correct position of where it should be ignoring the position of the rest of the spoiler then mark it the cross point of the back of the spoiler on the boot.
5. Now measure the depth of where you wish to drill to match up with the hole in the spoiler.
6. You now need to find a screw that will hold the spoiler in place from the underside of the boot.
7. This is where you need two people. You need to use a heat gun to heat the centre point of the spoiler whilst one person hold the spoiler at one end in roughly the right position and you push the other side to line up (DO NOT OVER HEAT THE SPOILER).
8. You may need to drill a whole at each end of the spoiler and secure it once in the correct position.
9. One you are happy with the position and held in place with the screws you are now ready to mark and cut the spoiler to fit the boot.
10. You will need to re-profile the ends to look correct or how you want it, I did not replicate the original look of a curve but you can or copy mine its up to you.
11. Get it painted and fix on using a bonding glue (Most body shops will have some or look for Tiger seal other wise) and screws.

Doc, where did you apply the heat when you were bending this? I took it to a bodyshop yesterday for a quote (£380+vat = suck my balls!!!) and they scratched their head and didn't believe it could be done well. I showed them the pics of yours and they were impressed!

I've decided to fit the thing myself and just get them to do the paintwork. Just unsure if i'll need to heat the 'inside' of the curve, the back of the spoiler or all over when bending it.

You need to heat the centre of the spoiler and and fix it to the boot in the middle first.

Ah nope and if they did you would have to cut it.

$266 and they do a B&C Carbon Pillar Kit for $144
Dunno about their shipping costs though.


I'll be getting both when I eventually get my next A4

Found a price in their PDF catalogue for the carbon spoiler, $377. $266 is for a composite paintable spoiler. These were 2005 prices though so could have gone up. So I'll wait to see what they say.

And as I have carbon mirrors and b-pillars, and are shortly gonna cover the small metal plate on the rear window in weave too, this will compliment them all well, just what I've been looking for! If their price is right!
