Ive done a thread on this mate. FYI, took I it to Audi, they changed the steering rack, the car was only 500miles old :(

Some ppl told me I was being picky and a little creaking should be ignored, I said i'll go with whatever Audi say.

Yup, me to new rack and rods :) Well worth it on my 3 yr old car hehe

New steering rack needed probably. This is well known issue on the Golf GTI, but I didn't know it had carried across to the A3/S3.

How much is a new steering rack?

This A3 is starting to cost me a small fortune

Need:

Flywheel
Clutch
EGR Valve maybe
Another valve at £135
And now a steering rack :(

Its a good thing that I love the car lol

Mine has the exact same problem, Audi indicates the steering rack is fine, I have taken the car 3 times and all they've done is lubricate. The noise is not 100% gone, I can still hear a bit.
Very anoying!

I've had 3 steering racks, its a known issue, Audi will fix depending on how postal you are prepared to go :)

I am out of warrenty unfortunately :(

I'd still speak to Audi, its a known issue and doenst go away just because your car is over 3 years old. A design fault is a design fault for the life of the car

Some others on here have had some levels of sucess, suggest getting in touch with Audi HQ and see where it ends up

think depends on how far out of warranty no??

if its like 3 months I would hazard a guess they might help but year etc I'd be surprised if they did anything to help against the cost

but as I always say you never get anything in this world without asking, so I ask for everything I can, lol, use the system against them mate cause they do against us.

Do try it with the dealer and Audi if necessary. The creaking is definitely a known problem - mine was replaced for this too. Audi have been very good with contributions / goodwill with me when my previous A3 was out of warranty (nearly a year).

The length of time since your warranty expired is not imporant. A manuacturer is obliged to ensure hat something lasts a reasonable amount of time (yes the law is that vague!!)

If you can prove that it is a design fault, and that the component should have lasted longer than it has, then you are entitled to replacement / refund etc

Do a google search for sale of goods act

That is good news to hear so will try Audi HQ as there is only one Audi Dealer in Northern Ireland :(

thanks

AJ how did you get on with this mate as I knew you had something with this aswell when we were chatting yesterday.

ye ye lol, got sod all to do with the creaking rack u ****, lol, seriously though what did you do in end mate?

Strange man, I reckons yours was your older slip ring as these have lots of white grease inside them to keep the ribbon lubricated given number of turns inside a day it has.
