Driving Experience

Well having had a very, VERY cr@p weekend (will post about this another time - but trust me watch where your number plate is published!), I can cheer myself up looking forward to a driving experience at Thruxton tomorrow.

Me, my brother and a mate are all doing the 'Ultimate Supercar Experience', so basically I'll be getting a blast in:

  • Porsche Cayman
  • Porsche 911 Turbo
  • Aston Martin V8 Vantage
  • Ferrari F430
  • Lamborghini LP640

The weather isn't looking to great, but hell, I can't wait to experience them all, especially that Lambo V12!!! :hubbahubba:

I'll post up details and pics later

It's this Thursday coming for my free go in an R8 now, postponed from last week.
I'm away to Prague for a long weekend on Friday, so don't know if I'll have time to post about it for a week or so after, sorry.

I'm still half-hoping it's the DB9 though..........

Is that the Evo Lambo?

Come on tell us what happened regarding your number place?

J.

Nope, not the Evo car that I'm aware of anyway. I think the one at Thruxton is the Olive green colour and Simon's car is White (doesn't he still run the Orange high miler too???).

With regards to the number plate I can't go in to specific details, but I've been 'cloned' which has caused some pretty huge problems. Can't say anymore at present.
It's apparantly an escalating problem in the South East with the number of Average Speed camera's on the increase, Congestion Charge zones, Cost of parking as well as the cost of petrol.

There was only 1 pic of my car without the number plate disguised on here and the person that posted it has very kindly removed it (thanks again - you know who you are!).
I'm going to assume that whoever cloned it didn't get it from here, more likely obtained randomly.

Pretty stressful all the same, so be careful people!

I was there last Friday in an Exige (1-to-1 course, which was excellent !) The Lambo was out of action by mid-morning, so it may end up not being there tomorrow, unless they have managed to get it fixed pretty quickly ;). Hope I'm wrong, as it would be a shame for you to miss out...

The course was well run, but I wasn't so sure of the people that were there for the various experiences . I passed the Lambo, F430, F355 and numerous Caymans, as people were being rather tentative in the more exotic machinery (not so the Exige, which they were quite happy for me to rag around as fast as I could :racer:).

Yep thats the ones. Another Evo reader I see :) And yes he still apperently has the orange one.

That is really bad news, I hope you mange to get it sorted out. There was a thread on one of the motorbike forums I go to where a woman had her bike cloned. She pointed out that apart from it being a completely different make of bike, she was in France at the time. They got back to her threatening her if she didnt tell them who was driving at the time they were going to charge her :banghead:

My best man was 'raided' by the coppers at his house, after his motorbike plate was used for something dodgy in Devon.
Proving he wasn't there became quite a palavor.
I was once reported for some dodgy driving too.
Coppers came to our office, I used CCTV to prove I wasn't driving on said road at said time.
I never found out if that was cloning, or just someone being vindictive.

The Lambo was in service - looking awesome in battleship grey, carbon pack and Black rims!
An awesome day, I'll write up a full review with some pics later, but I would recommend to anyone. Great track, great cars, great instructors and a very well run operation!

I know what you mean about some of the other drivers mate - some people out in the cayman's were going painfully slow!

I love Evo, though it's a shame Richard Meaden and Jethro have moved on.
Having said that, as Drivers Republic grows it could become quite interesting!!!

I know - relly bummed out by it all.
Having said that, as this issue has increased, perhaps the police's attitudes to the situation has changed.
Thames Valley Police were inceredibly helpful, giving me lot's of advice and taking me through a checklist of all the things I need to do.
The DVLA have been very helpful and are also supporting me in transferring my plate... I may even elect to get a private one.

Early days so it could all turn bad still!

I must admit I am worried that it will get in to a prove it situation.
I do ahve witnesses stating where I was, but I'm hoping that a look over my car will prove it's the genuine one, and that it has not had any accident damage.

Just hassle isn't it!

Did they suggest private plates are less likely to be cloned?
Just curious, given that I have one.

Not at all mate - It's simply a means to move away from the plate someone currently has. ie, as the car that copied my plate was involved in a serious accident (and then left the scene) it's probably no longer on the car. However, they know that the plate corresponds with a car like mine and in 6 months time, could be used again.
I just don't want this issue to come around again...!

Jamie why not have a Ferrari F430 / R8 / Gallardo Spyder from me for the whole day for that much money...
You can go wherever you want it with it... All yours.

Hey mate,

There were 3 of us doing it and we did look in to the hiring of cars for a day.
Spoke with Churchills who could get us a DBS, Gallardo and an R8. All had a whopping £5k excess (£10k on the Aston) and a 100 mile limit. We kind of fealt that we'd have them more for the pose than the driving, so ended up doing the track thing instead!
Licence still in tact - huge smile still on my face!!

I will hire one for the road one day...!

So, is that a company you run???

Glad you had a good time Jamie, and that the Lambo was back in service  . It did look awesome in that colour scheme !

It's hard to believe that you can actually drive a Cayman as slow as some of those people can...

I wont ask you for a crazy figures like that... Plus with the mileage i could sort you out extra miles rather then the 100 miles.

Got few links so am able to get cars for all kind of occasions and at the moment bought my first hire car about 2weeks back which goes out on hire.
The new C-class Merc C220 Cdi in White with AMG bodykit and alloys. Fully loaded.
Thats my own that goes out on hire.

Well whenever your ready Jamie give me a shout and we can arrange something.

I'll remember that mate.
Funnily enough I got chatting to the owner of the LP640 at Thruxton, and there is a big chunck of cash to be made in the hiring out supercars business.
The thing barely stood still for 5 minutes all day..... the chap told me he had 3 LP640's doing this round the country, he changes them every year for new stock..... surely it isn't that easy????

It did get me thinking though!

No probs mate.

Well to be honest its the season for it.
I mean my Merc has been booked out for every weekend since i've had it...
Wedding season gota love it if your in the hiring business.

Its sounds easy but obviously there are quieter times where you've got to make ends meet few overheads to cover.

LP640 is big money earner... we had our one hired out acouple of times this month... £3800 for the weekend!!!! And people will pay for it...

I was at Thruxton last tuesday and it ****** down all morning!!! Interesting driving though - still came top of the group of 40 or so I was with:rock:

Over all the cars I averaged 93% - pretty pleased with that!
I did the lot:
Porsche Cayman - Really liked
Aston Vantage V8 - Surprised me - not the fastest car, but great to drive
Ferrari F430 - A bit edgy - think it's the sort of car you need more time to gel with
Lambo LP640 - Really gelled with this car - goes just where you want it... one of the easiest to drive and that really surprised me!
Porsche 997 Turbo - Just what I expected - easy to drive, rapid and stuck like glue!
Dodge Viper - Old School, not so great in the corners (it hopped through the faster one's!), but what a drag machine!

Sorry about the delay in getting up a proper review guys - has taken me an age to sort through pic's, but anyway, here we go!

So on Tuesday I finally cashed in the Ultimate Supercar Experience birthday present my girlfriend and family chipped together to buy for me. My brother and a mate did it as well and I paid for my good lady to have the Lamborghini LP640 experience (to try and make her more enthusiastic about cars!).

Anyway, turned up at Thruxton with plenty of time so had a chance to drool over some of the cars. Sitting at the end of the paddock was this. The Lambo has such presence, a real supercar that just knocks you over even when stood still! Especially in this colour combo...

After checking in it was time for a safety talk and explanation of the track.
Next up was a ride out with one of the instructors in a Mazda 3MPS, talking through the lines and how best to approach each corner. The guy we had was particularly good as he was explaining & showing what happens if you get it wrong... that certainly helped my girlfriend get her head round it.

I was really impressed with the track. Nice and wide with to slower 'complex' sections then several high speed corners, some with interesting cambers at the apex and on the exit along with a fast back straight and a heavy braking zone.
I particularly liked:
Entry to the first complex - hard braking then hard right, left and then on the power
Exit out of Segrave - off camber, on the power, drifting out to the curb
Noble - fast left with a late apex
Church - fastest corner (I saw 95 mph), right hander especially the undulation at the apex that just unsettles the car in to an off camber exit, feeding on the power until your straight then plant it for the back straight (where I saw 140mph).
The circuit feels really good when you get a rhythm going, but punishes you if you get a corner wrong.

Next up was the Porsche Cayman 2.7's. Again, you're in with an instructor who's assessing your ability and giving you a score (this determines how the guys in the supercars treat your drive). A useful session and again the pace picks up pretty quickly. I was pretty impressed with the Cayman actually. Was really nice to drive, great in the corners... could do with more power though... would really like a go in a Cayman S!!!
Anyway, was pretty pleased with how I drove, hooking up the corners nicely and received a few compliments from the instructor - which was nice :) I got a score of 92% meaning the drivers of the supercars are a little more encouraging when you get behind the wheel of them!

Next up was the Aston V8 Vantage.
Beautiful little car, especially with the anthracite wheels and sounded awesome. The car I'd driven had the flappy paddle gearbox, which though handy was quite jerky on shifts, either way, put your foot down and the thing sounded sooooo good! Car was really comfy, didn't feel that quick, but handled really well (it was a drop top too!!). I really enjoyed my drive in this one.... I bet the new 4.7 version n with the extra power is great!

JKIMG_0909.jpg

Then we had the F430.
I was really, REALLY looking forward to this one. I've loved Ferrari's pretty much since I could walk and talk and would never hear a bad word said about them, but it was probably my least favourite to drive round a track for 4 laps. That's not to say a hated it, the noise, the drama were just awesome (the instructor was even happy enough to put the magneto in to Race), but for 4 laps it was just too edgy. It's the sort of car that could take you forever to master, which in hindsight probably makes it all the better... a constant challenge then... maybe I should have another go in this one, but in a manual next time???

Next was the big one, Lambo LP640.
Had a really good chat with the owner (Martin) who would be with me in the car. He has several of them and turn them over pretty much every year (this got me thinking about a new business idea!). Anyway, the drama with this car, scissor doors, quilted leather, carbon trim, negotiating getting in the car, firing up THAT engine.... seriously, if my numbers came in it's the first super car I'd order.... it was better in the flesh than I'd dreamt! Again, flappy paddle box, smoother than the Aston's, but made something this intimidating an absolute doddle to drive! Carbon fibre paddles too :w00t:
First stab of the gas and I was just laughing, the noise from that engine was just awesome, a few mm of travel on the gas pedal translates to big stabs of acceleration.
The best thing about it was it's ability to go just where you want it to, much better than the Ferrari in that respect, it inspired confidence. Grip was immense, especially through the faster corners, again, I ended up laughing most of the way through this drive I was enjoying it that much. On the back straight a chance to stretch it's legs, even with early up shifts it got to 140mph with no fuss.... I LOVE THIS CAR!!!

Then we had the 997 Turbo.
I've driven a mates 996 Turbo several times before, so I'm pretty familiar with this sort of car, but I was quite surprised with just how much of an improvement the 997 is. Considering it's turbo charged, the amount of boost low down was really impressive, the thing just shot out of corners at warp speed. The instructor in this car really encouraged me to go for it and I probably had the best drive in this car. It was also probably the easiest to drive fast on track, easy to place in to corners and awesome brakes!

That should have been it, but my girlfriend as part of the Lambo experience had the opportunity to go in the single seater's, she didn't fancy it so we asked if we could swap it for something else. They offered the Dodge Viper, which she still didn't fancy so she let me do it instead.

So, besides it taking about 10 minutes to fire up due to issues with the immobiliser (you would cry if it was your car and you we're trying to do this on a busy street!!!), when that engine caught it sounded a beast. Side pipes, left had drive and the stiffest clutch and gearbox I've ever experienced, oh and no traction or ESP!!! It's so highly geared that it's practically ticking over and your tearing along, but when you plant it, it makes a great noise (thanks Lamborghini as I believe they developed the engine!). The car is prehistoric compared to the other cars, it's stiff, skips through the faster corners, but on the back straight it matched the Lambo for acceleration (I saw 135mph!) and again had me laughing... I really enjoyed this one and would recommend it!!!

Then that was it a great day..... I wished I could have started it all over again.

A great day out and has made me decide to get involved in more track days in my car.

I wont ask you for a crazy figures like that... Plus with the mileage i could sort you out extra miles rather then the 100 miles.

Well whenever your ready Jamie give me a shout and we can arrange something.

Got the pictures that i promised to afew people.

Was a friend of mines wedding last bank holiday Monday so had a couple of cars like i explained before i'm doing car hire and here are the two supercars available for hire if you ever want to treat yourself.

I decided to take the F430 and my mate took the R8.
I didnt get a chance to take pics of my Merc but will do soon and post them up too.... thats also available for hire.

Pretty much all our fleet of cars are in white now... The F430 incidenlty had a full respray done from Red few days before i got my hands onto it.

Pictures aren't the best got someone to take was too busy inside SERVING!! Bare in mind cars were dirty didnt get a chance to clean them.

Picked them up from customers who returned them around 12pm didnt get a chance to drive properly until 8pm. Took them for a blast up to London central...
No point in explaining how amazing they were... even if we normally see them on road we all are like :hubbahubba: . Driven an F430 before only went for it again because of it sounds...!!
Drivewise the R8 is an amazing machine to drive... Not as quick as the F430 but two different types of cars fo different experiences.
Anyway :blahblah1::blahblah1::blahblah1:.... Enjoy....

How to murder an R8... ERRRRRRGHHHH!

Nice motors!

The Ferrari can just pull off the all white look, but the R8, I think that needs the contrasting grill and air vents in black!
Would love to take them for a blast like!

How to murder an R8... ERRRRRRGHHHH!

:lmfao:Understandable... but seriously jonny pictures are pants.. You really got to see it in flesh. It's got privacy glass and the alloys are powdercoated white too... except by don't really look it in THAT picture.

Quite like the idea of the white wheels but ill take your word on the front end.. lol

R8 is like a fancy TT to drive but I would pay the money just for the looks, absolutely love it!

This R8 is quite special too.. ;)

Hmmmm!!
Imagine the sound on that.

Yeah fancy TT but just sounds 10x better...

Really wanted to take the F430 to Heathrow tunnel but didnt get a chance... got too busy in central.

Its going to be built by Audi Motosport for the GT3 class which means only customer teams will run the cars..

No ill be with Drayson-Barwell again next year :)
