I have a MK4 Golf (that has an airbag light on and service indicator) and in the next month or so will be buying a S3.

Is it worth be buying a VAGCOM?

If so, which one? How much are they? Are they easy to use?

Thanks in advance

some dealers will charge around £60 just to hook your car up to VAGCOM so i think its worth buying as it soon pays for itself. However there is a lot to learn about the program, im still a complete novice myself but am determined to get the most out of it! VAGCOM should be able to clear your service indicator but im not sure about the airbag light. Could be a sensor? Oh and excellent choice on your new car

I dont think there is actually a problem with a sensor, it just got disturbed when i was messing around with the seat and can be just cleared!

djakster - which vagcom have you got? how much was it?

I bought the HEX&CAN USB lead from the Rosstech website which means you can run it on most VAG cars and it was $349. However im sure you can get a lead without the 'CAN' interface which will work fine on the S3 or Golf for about half the price. The reason I went for the more expensive option is in case I upgrade to a newish VAG car or my friends need to borrow it.

what does it cost nowadays for VAG-com.....i have an aftermarket lead that lets me do the basic stuff...although wont let me use the measuring blocks to check turbo pressure etc....assume i need to purchase the activation code for this

id go for the USB lead if i were you..... much easier to use and you dont have to worry about about messing software up when unplugging whilst your laptop is on

After i had posted it i realised i had picked the wrong one! oops!

where abouts in sheffield are you from? I live in high green!

Tim, you say aftermarket lead?? Ive got one but havent a clue which software it will work with!! was a £10 ebay special!! what set up have you got... ie, lead / software wise??

Clarkey i live near crystal peaks mate..... what car ya driving?...will have to wave if i see ya!!Scott, im using vists with an OBD-II lead from ebay !!! a blue colur with LED....works ok but can only get the 4.09 software to work, seems bit limited to other unsubscribers...thinking abvout full version, only $249....£125!!!! inc lead

I have got a red MK4 Golf T4** PDD

Does anyone know how long it takes for dispatch/delivery from Ross-Tech?

An OBD-II usb to serial emulator (£10 -£15 on ebay) will suffice for most things you need using VAG-COM 409.1 and a crack :whistle2: to 'register' and activate it. you will be able to clear most fault codes without using the crack though.
However, this will only work on 8L (mk1) A3 and S3

Clarkey, will keep an eye out for ya mate..... mines N**UDY

Kev, and a suitable person to activate can be found where:eek:)

Kevandalice - will that be able to clear the airbag light then?

delivery is very quick mate considering its from the states. Comes via Fedex, think it takes about 3 days

cool, is it easy to do?

have i to get the full copy or take a chance on fleebay first?

yeah just had a look at the UK sites selling it, rip off!!! they must have a right mark up!!

some people to go for the freeware versions first to see if its for them, but to get the latest version & features youre best buying from Rosstech. Plus i think you get free software updates

My Mk3 Golf VR6 had the airbag light on,my mate was able to hook it up and delete the error code!

Bought an ebay one for now, i will try and test it this weekend, post the results and buy a vagcom if i need to!

Thanks for all the replies!

Afternoon all

Right, I have got the lead all working fine and can scan my car no worries.
The thing is I cant change my service indicator! When i try and add a new value it says 'the registered verson can code your ECU etc etc etc'!

Sholud i pay 50 quid for a full copy just to reset my service light?

no you can reset it using the dash buttons on my A3 presumeits the same for a mk4 golf.

according to haynes - ignition off press and hold trip reset button , turn the digital clock reset know clockwise. and the trip display will show 'service ---'. depress the clock reset button as required to alternate between individual services.

Or look in your haynes for the mk4 golf...
