Help, I need a new AMK engine

Hey Guys

I'm in a bit of a pickle, I bought my AMK S3 privately last year and have had no end of problems with the engine. First the cam belt went after 90 miles doing plenty of damage, then the coilpacks, plugs, Cam Belt Tensioner, etc, etc I think some of this is due to the toss pot who owned it before me either by not doing any of the maintenance or just caining the pants off of it. I won't put all the details, but my mechanic says either need a full rebuild or a new engine, so I really do need help.

So if any of you guys know of anyone selling a AMK engine in the London area or even the south of england I would be greatful.

gutted for you mate - thats why there are loads of cheap S3's on the Trader at the moment coz people don't look after them. People don't realise that you have to pay for quality. Cheap car most of the time = lots of trouble.

Hope you source one quickly.
 
yep that is crap as mechanically if you look after these cars they seem to last the distance with only a few niggles here and there. Did the car come with a detailed history originally? After the fact I know and no use but maybe in this instance you have just been unlucky.

This car's on Fleabay for breaking - 2001 but no engine code and took big front impact by the looks of things.

The guy had the Audi 'AVS' Value servicing done & stamped, and had some warranty package. Thou I think he know things were about the go Pete Tong and flogged it. Good for him Bad for me.

Gutted to for you mate, worse nightmare when you first buy a car.

You thought about extending the search to breaking TT's to? I believe AMK is the 225 version and shares the same power plant as the TT.... only a thought!?!

Couldn't agree with you more, now the price of these cars have come down some what, they are getting bought by people who can afford to buy them but cant afford to run them.
At the end of the day, they are pretty much bullet proof if you look after them. Skimping on servicing is not an option on these cars!
 
The BAM is the 225 the AMK is the 210 version, I believe
 
Ahh apologies I did get that info from that thread originally but I seemed to have read it wrong!
 
Hi Guys
Quick update, i've had a call back from reconditioned engines at Heathrow, and they have quoted me (Only on the phone so far) £1795 including the fitting and taking my lump in exchange with a 60,000 miles guarantee. So it's a start, just need to find the dosh now!

i had the same problem with golf 1.8t and there was a good company which replaced the whole lot, called "the engine shop". they were really good and had a good rep with the golf crowd. the car came back in very good health. same price but i think unless you can get a complete engine (that can be sure to work) its your best bet.
 
I'm going down to see him tomorrow morning, as my engine is in pieces at the moments due to broken valve spring and burnt out valve guides after just 5 months.

Reasonably good news, my mechanic has had the head re-skimmed and the valve re seated, but has said that the valve guides are on there way out after just five months since the were changed. He says that there is a bit of play in the pistons but said the engine should be okay for a while, but to look out it case it starts to smoke. To be honest he is a good bloke and I have been using him for at least ten years and he has always gives the worst case scenario. He has said I should even look out for a new lump or to consider getting uprated conrods and pistons, to make it more bulletproof. what do you guys think. Also just out of interest where would I look for these uprated bits. Cheers fellas for all the advise and have great weekend.

You could get Scat rods and JE pistons imported from the states for less than that
 
PLEASE DON'T USE THAT COMPANY

google them (or rivermead engineering or engines direct) - all their old company names and see what comes up - they have been on watchdog and garages from hell a number of times and are complete cowboys

as for the new engine, their is one in the pistonheads classifieds but it's a bam code and 500 sheets

I've unfortunately found out the hard way - the last owner of my car had work done by them and it lasted (for a couple of years), the end result is that my engine is now in bits and the head's gone off to be skimmed & the valves re-seated, it looks like they used some kind of rubbish filler within the engine and didn't seat one of the inlet valves properly causing problems on cylinder one.

I'm just hoping it's all fixable otherwise i'm going to be left with a 1400kg paperweight :(
 
Good News

My mechanic Simon has got the car running, so I am well pleased. We have fitted the new Cam chain tensioner, re seated the valves, new valve springs, new cam belt and cleaned the throttle body for good measure and she is purring like tony the tiger. he has told me to go easy on it, so I will for a while.

I have been checking out the uprated Rods and Pistons on the links supplied, as recommended and it all seems good to me, especially if I can get them from the states at the current exchange rate.

The one thing I have noticed is that the pistons lower the compression rate, which I'm sure is good from the turbo, but I'm sure this will mean I will need to get the car re mapped again, can anyone confirm this.
