Well, I came back to play some more MGS yesterday and turned the PS3 on.....

I got a message saying, the harddrive needed rebuilding and to click ok.

Then I got told all my data was going to be wiped as it needed to be formatted due to the rebuild not doing its job.

So I had no choice. As a result I've lost ALL my game saves!

arrrrgghhh!!!! Hours of R:FOM, Assassins, MGS, Pro Evo, Lego Star wars etc etc etc GONE! :tumble:

So, if you have a PS3, and HAVENT backed up your game saves, do it now.

Ive looked around the net and it seems to be a fairly popular problem, especially after update 2.0 so look out. :rtfm:

Its dead easy to back up your savegames to a mem stick or external usb too!..
You could probably find savegames on the net of you look.
I have 2 ps3's (60 gig models upgraded to 320G) and have been fine. Could be worth you upgrading you drive if its got bad sectors or something?

yeah, might well be worth upgrading the hdd. No idea why it bombed out, but it did so gloriously!

Have formatted it and its all good, although I transferred some pics back and theres some corrupt data files... not sure if this is PS3 HDD or a corrupt file on the server?

I really only use the PS3 for gaming and blu-ray tho... as have a network setup already looking after the other stuff.

As for backing up being easy..... I have no doubt it is. Funnily enough I would never be without backup for my computer stuff, just never even thought about the PS3 going tits up! My fault completely, and I will pay for it by working thru the games again. Dont do net downloads even in this case. The games I have started again so far though are on the hardest levels, and I'm sure on MGS the opening sequence was different!

Mine packed up a couple of months after i bought it so they sent me out a new one. Some of the games i haven't bothered playing again really. I don't wanna do the same missions all over again. Hoping it won't do it now but i really should back it up too.

yeah, its the 'should' bit of the backup that I had a problem with.

I think the most annoying thing is that my lad plays star wars on it... we had all the characters and a load of studs, but now they are all gone... so of course when he comes to play it by himself, he is getting stuck/doesnt have the right characters. Hes always buggin me for help! ;)

Ive just uprated the HDD after chatting about it and in the process of installing ubuntu, as the missis wnats to watch twin peaks, and I only have them on avi. The pc hooked up to the tv, Ive removed the CD driver from so I cant play them thru that and its only on a 3.5mm audio jack anyway so sound would be pish. Thought having a blank disc was the ideal opportunity to add the OS on. VLC here we come.

I think its just handy having it setup by the tv. I really only use the one downstairs for blueray and playing camcorder stuff since I have a HD camcorder that records onto SD. I have one upstairs hooked up for gaming not that I get much chance to do that really!. Would be great if you could watch iplayer on it ; seems a missed opportunity and I end up using my media centre vista box hooked up to the tv to watch missed progs..

Anyway, I got it for blazing angels mainly which i think is a superb game..

Is this anything to do with the update that went out last week, as their was an update released to put it upto version 2.40, however they removed it after a while as Sony had loads of phone calls saying that their HDD's had gone t*ts up due to the uypgrade, and the only way round it was to format the HDD!!!

Touchwood, mine has been ok, but i have heard alot of people have had this problem, also I think the current version is still v2.36

Urm, I dunno. I have the 2.40 update on at the moment, which was released on Weds. I didnt play anything until Friday evening... when I got in from work by son had been trying to play lego star wars but failed so just left it on.

When I turned the TV on the message I got was 'need to rebuild.......' so I could assume its 2.40, its a dodgy HDD, or r'kid did some magic trick to it!

It maybe to do with the update, have a read on avforums.co.uk go to the gaming then ps3 forum and its all on there, i believe there is a new update coming out on Wednesday to resolve the issues caused by this.

yeah, I saw it all over the web. I just cant say 'for sure'.

I might delay the update and see if it crashes out again..

Hopefully this new update will be alot better and will improve on the issues from the last update.

See how it goes and let us know how you get on mate :)

v2.41 is out now and apparently sorts any issue of the previous update out.

well, Ive scrapped the ubuntu install. WAS fiddly and really it stopped my son using it without my help... it ran a bit sluggish too did the OS. So, back to square one.

BTW, a FULL format takes 4hrs!

You totally lost me...lol

LOL...

Sorry... earlier in the thread I mentioned I was installing another operating system on the PS3. That OS was linux flavoured in Ubuntu. Since doing that, its been a pain, and to boot back into PS3 XMB, you need to type 'boot-game-os' at the kboot prompt to change the boot up flag soo that when you turn the PS3 on it boots PS3!

Oh now it makes sense.....not!!

No only messing mate, apparently it is supposed to run a lot better on linux, but as to going down that route, i think i'll just make do with it as it is for now ;-)

Oi! ;)

Well it certainly didnt run a lot better... Wasnt like a big issue or anything, but really can use plenty of other devices instead of booting to linux on the PS

LOL....thanks for testing that for me then, at least I wont be doing that then.

HAHA, yeah theres no point unless ALL you had was a PS3... i.e. no laptop/pc etc etc.

Ive got to update the PS firmware too as it wont let me log into my account until I do... so no testing here...

Go for the update, i did mine the other day and so far so good, no probs whatsoever.

mines just this minute messed up up with the 2.41 update, i no they took off the 2.40 update coz of complaints of this trouble and said they've cured it with the 2.41 and mines just ******** up. not happy, lost all the games i've downloaded from the playstation store, the only small mercy is i've still got my trophies and my call of duty 4 online ranks. but everything else i've paid for from the store has gone.

You can re download it for free as it stores the info on your login details...hope that helps

Yep im pretty sure that once you have paid for them, you can re download, incase they are deleted in error, give it a blast, what you got to lose??

Oh and let us know how you get on.

yes, you can, and the latest update has fixed a lot if not all of the media centre streaming issues related to the network. (http 50 errors)

yeah i got my downloads back thank god!! just lost ALL my game saves so gotta start fresh. was at 93% on gta4 too!!

Glad you got it sorted....as for the 93% yea they all say that!!!:)
