S3 95RON

Hey I am thinking of getting an S3 sportback as a company car and wanted to know if it can run on 95RON or if it will only run on 98RON. I know 98RON is recommended but would it be ok on 95 with the odd bit of 98 thrown here and there. Reason I ask is if I am using it for business don't want to be chucking in 98RON all the time as I will only be getting 13ppbm.

Yes of course it will work but at a lower performance than if you use 98ron.

I used v power from new in mine.

It will be fine , but it may run a little rough on 95ron.

It will also be slower than if you use 98-99ron fuel.

I nearly always run mine on 95ron. I didn't even know it was supposed to be run on 98ron!

It has to be said though that the odd time that I do put Tesco 99ron in, it does make alot of difference performance wise.

You will find that as the car is running on lower ron than it was mapped to run on it will ****** the ignition. This will cause you power and MPG to drop, paying the bit extra for 98ron will not really cost you any difference(once you take mileage into account) as the car will run better on it and your mpg will go up. There will be no other bad effect though by running lower ron fuel as the ECU is designed to adapt and ****** the ignition to accept it.

98 on mine!! And it is noticiable that the car does prefer 98 to 95.... it just doesn't feel right on 95.

But you can run it on 95.. yes.

Most of the time it gets optimax, but will use 95 if desperate - but dont tend to boot it when using 95. Tend to find the car annoying slow to adjust to different fuels ie optimax or tesco 99.

As above really.

You'll be fine with 95ron but you will see a difference in performance, the lower octane will be a weaker burn therefore the ECU will ****** the igniton angle due to higher knock ****** for the cylinders.

Engine development always use 95ron at one stage of the development process as not every country gets nice fuel, the yanks struggle to get more than 92ron last time i was over there!

Im also under the impression that 98 is a 'cleaner & purer' fuel hence less 'knocking' effect and supposedly better performance

Its fine to mix the fuel, the engine has knock control so the ECU adapts (learns) as you drive.

America uses Mon rather than Ron for the rating for its fuel. 92Mon is the same as 98Ron over here. There are gas stations selling 105Mon over there imagine how potent that would be.

It isnt cleaner or purer, the octane rating is the level the fuel will ignite at(higher level better bang, lower level more burn less bang). If the engine senser knock it ******* the ignition which is what happens on 95ron. It will not harm the engine but to make the most out of any fuel change the ECU will take about 3-4 tank fulls to get the ignition to optimum. So changing fuels each tank gets you no where.

I "had" to put 95 in mine once, as i was running so low and couldnt find a decent garage.

The car ran less smoothly, a little hesitant from a standing start, and a much less smooth power delivery, with less urgency.

I couldnt wait to get 98 back in...

If you run 95ron all the time i don't reckon your car would make much over book figure 265ps , on a recent RR day cars that use 99ron ( from new )fuel , saw as much as 294ps on the rollers.
