has anyone tried this...

Guys,

I visited colinra last week for a bit of testing and all went well, only one item was missing which was the oil temp, I may be able to fix this though but it needs a bi of investigation.

Now just waiting for NEV to finish his install and post some pictures.

Is this available for both the facelift and old style dashboard? Are the air vents the same for both?

Jojo there the same shape so should be exactly the same! same diagnostic post location as well

guys,

a quick update, ive smoothed out a vent and am waiting for a sheet metal company to make the first one from my template ive given them,

i was going to shape my own but as so many people want them fabrication would take to long if a did them all myself,

as soon as its back ill get it mounted an post some pics to see what you think.

cheers

Are you sure?? i had a pre-facelift before my facelift and its in the same place. Might of been a late pre-facelift  If its in the ashtry, might be easier to use the centre vents instead of the drivers!!

only very early pre facelift cars have the obd2 port under the ashtray the majority of vehicles will be under the dash on drivers side.

Mine's a 1999 and its under the ashtray. As long as the cable's long enough, it shouldn't make a difference if the side vent is used.

Two clips holding the diagnostics to the plastic undertray, pop this out and then connect the wire to it, route it up behind the heater matrix and it should connect straight to the screen. I want to see one working in an a3/s3 would be interested to see how it reads the different stats etc and how it looks.

Also instead of a Carbon or ally backing, maybe a piano black backing to match the trim inside the S3?

im interested to as i dont have any guages in my car and would like to know my egt and boost of the ihi, so another one to the list.
would like to see it installed and how easy it is to fit(im not very good at things like that) and mines a 1999 but id like it in the right vent.

Again another one for the groupbuy list-count me in! Cant afford it but sod it eh

was thinking this too today, seems to have a gone quiet!

I got an update from NEV last week, mk1 turned out less well than he had hoped so he has moved on to mk2.

Pester him for an update!

Just to keep you interested here is a picture of the new DYNO option, nice....

will have pics ready by this weekend, its nearlly there, the good thing is ive made quite a few mounts so they will be a quick turn around for you, cost for the vent is looking about £30 on exchange basis.

although i will be mounting mine where the cup holder was its nothing i can do for you as it requires gutting the dash around where the cup holder was.

jim is there any way of getting the boost to PSI and not bar??

I'm getting excited!!!! how much hard work will it be to put it where the cup holder is?? i presume you will only be supplying it to fit in the vent??

i have made up a plate for where the cup holder is but where the holder use to be ive had to gut the glastic so the liquid TT can fit in, its hard work plus i dont think i will ever be able to put the cup holder back in. oooppppsss.

ill get some pics of it to give you an idea of the amount of work,

*off topic* sorry i bet this has been asked a thousand times but can you get the BHP/Torque info straight from VAGCOM? Dont worry ill still be purchasing one of these but it would be handy to know. Ive already had a look on the RossTech website with no joy *back onto topic* lol

I've got a pre-faclift. The best place for me would be the right hand centre air vent. Would it be possible to produce one for there on an exchanged basis?

the unit calculates bhp and torque this way

bhp = maf/0.8 (this is a general rule of thumb but has proven to be accurate for the 1.8T engine)

torque = bhp*5252/revs (this is the way it is see here http://www.epi-eng.com/piston_engine_technology/power_and_torque.htm)

Can't belive i have not spotted this thread before!

This looks very cool and i will be interested (as it looks like every other A3/S3 owner is gonna get one) too.

Mine is a pre facelift with the OBD port on the under the dash by the steering wheel. Could i install it in the centre console air vents as i like the cool breeze the vents provide when driving (and i assume you will get no air with one of these installed)?

no a problem, i am buying a few right vents so they will be ready to sent but wont be for the centre so i would have to dothe one you send,

fingers crossed there will be pics of it finished tonight.

no finished yet, needs more smoothing thats the first coat of paint but thought i would show you the progress??

thoughts??

yes?? No???

nice Leon lol. Looks good, it may just be the pics but the LCD screen seems a lot smaller than the TT variant?

looking good! I would be intersted in some pictures of the cup holder install too, not completely sure about having one in the vent at the mo, although i will do if the cup holder looks too much like a mission to do! Is the screen touch screen or is the a button for navigation of the screens? Also what will it be capable of reading is thier a list about? And finaly the plug socket for the face lift S3's is obviously down the right had side will it be just plugged in and on view or is the idea to pop the socket out and plug in behind the dash? If you get what i'm on about! But then it will be a pain to get to if i actually want to plug in vag com won't it?
Thanks for your had work your putting into it anyway it's looking good!

pics look very professional. It saves us trying to find somewhere to mount it where it looks like part of the car.

I will only use it for boost pressure and system faults and think it'll be worth every penny! Do you know if it shows fault codes as soon as they occur or do we have to scan for them?

you have to search for the error codes

if you never want to put your cup holder back thats fine, it is a big mission, very big, but i like doing trick things that are different.

I'm not worried about the cup holder once it's in it's in but it depends how easy it is to do, i don't mind it taking a while to do it's just that i wouldn't be a able to fabricate anything to make it look good mounted in there, i don't mind having the trim off and gutting the inside it's the outside i want to look good.
