Pick up new car tomorrow - S3 going

media

Jeez, what's wrong with me, I'm now looking at them on Autotrader, and I like this one... Black with red

Seems to suddenly be a lot on there, all around £29,995, guess they could all be ex-management cars that are now being released?

Definetly the best colour for the 1 series coupe.

Great car. Congrats. You need to map it to unleash the beast.

I will be looking into map, but not for a few months (if I can hold myself back that long) I've got about 1250 miles on it and got my first tank of Vpower in it and already it has made a difference, mostly at the top end of the rev band where it has relly picked up. I thought it was a little tight as the power seemed to be stready all the way to 7000RPM, but now it just keep building WOW :-0. I can wait to get to to about 3000 miles as this is one hell of an engine and I can't believe it delivers only 306 BHP and 5.3 secs to 62 seems not generous enough I recon to 60 it will be about 4.8 and about 5 to 62. I saw a print out on the web yesterday for a std 135i on the drag stip doing 0-60 in 4.7, 0-100 in 11.5, I hope mine can do that standard:eyebrows:

I went for the Sedona Rred in the end, it really grew on me. Can't dispute Black is best though, but I did get a very good deal and a high spec (£35k) for my S3 (2007 with 10700 miles) and £6995 with a tank of fuel and road tax.

If you haven't driven one, don't test drive it unless you are able to buy one:jump:. Also, bear in mind none of the demonstrators will have Vpower in the tank, I dount it will even be super unleaded, so the performance will not be anywhere near as bright as it will be on Vpower :superman:

I hate you! :)

All joking aside , you got a cracking deal , the Std seats hold you in far more than the Std S3 seats do.

Is there any good forums/owners clubs that 135i owners go on?

p

I haven't looked for any forums yet, will do at weekend if I get time.

The seats have a button to adjust the sides to really pin you to the seats. it sounds like it is operated by and air pump. A neat feature, I recon and does a good job of fitting the seats to the passenger and driver.

I don't like the 1-series that much.... Well I have seen a 3 door one in white... sure looks better but shape wise still prefer my S3.

Also in the mags were they tested the 135i most were disappointed not because car is not good but because the short wheel base doesn't give it the healthy dynamics a rear wheel 3 series has... so a bit twitchy they said....

If looking for a rearwheel drive car with that engine I would go for the 3 series... not much more expensive and a lot more car!! Judging by the 118d I drove a couple a weeks ago, it is a step down in interior materials and "feel good" cabin.... also the door shuts like a garage gate!!! ahahah

But what an engine!!!! the 135i that is!!

Enjoy it!!

Pedro

The 135i is 2 inches narrower and 8 inches shorter than the 3 series and only about 40Kgs less in weight as it has been reinforced over the std 1 series to be very "stiff"

One thing I forgot to mention........ my insurance has dropped by £20 per month and I am getting much better MPG.

You are going to fall in love with it when you are mapped. I have a 335i for about 20 months now. Been "chipped" for about a year. Had a piggyback unit, but now I have a flash. Going like a Boeing!

Hi Simon. Readng your posts I had to dig into my old evo collection as I was sure they had some negatives to say about the 135i. You noticed any of this yet ? When I first read it it put me off the car as I pretty much trust what these reviewers have to say. Would be interested to hear your thoughts as an owner

It’s the front that will eventually let go first, and this, combined with steering that doesn’t feel quite as precise or reassuring as you’d like, can make it difficult to commit on the entry to a bend.

If you do manage to unsettle the tail then new electronic trickery will act like a limited-slip diff and prevent the 135i from just spinning-up an inside wheel. It works well, but the rear will be fighting hard to regain grip all the time it’s sliding, and in the dry there’s more grip than power. Not an oversteer hero then

I haven;t noticed any of this yet, but then again they probably noticed these thing on a trach at the exteme limits of the car. On the road and in the real world, I don;t think you would evey notice this. To be honest, I find the ride firm and sporty with almost no body roll and it feels very balanced at speed and drive really well and feel safe when pushing on. The TC when on it better than most I have experienced as it will still keep the power coming so you are still in control. With it in the Semi off mode, it does allow quite alot of wheel spin and can get the back end out when pressing on on some nice tight corners if you giver it too much "beans".

I would be interested to know if the review was on the 135i or the 135i M Sport as the handling and TC are very different.

I thought the 135/335i engine was unable to be re-mapped at the min as nobody can crack it yet. Or is this not the case anymore? I know there are plenty of 'piggyback' or 'tuning box' units available though.

Superchips do one already.

Its got to be teh 3 series for me if I defected to BMW. That 1coupe looks like noddys run about. :p

No denying the engine is a cracker though..

I guess in life you sometimes have to decide which is more important:

A - An absolute Babe lacking some of the finer bedroom skills
or
B - A bit of a minger who could suck a golfball through a hosepipe

Cool analogy.

an interesting choice  they both have there advantages, but its down to personal choice I suppose

From the description it sounds more like a "sprint booster" which re profiles the throttle position to the pedal position. It make the "feel" of the car far more aggressive but does not increase power at all. I had one of these before on a 3.2Ltr V6 with a supercharger and it felt great, bit alas same power, just different delivery. It produces full throttle when the pdal it about halfway depressed so everything ramps up far quicker. You could say you are getting more power at the same "pedal" position, but at full throttle it is identical. I would be interested to hear more on precisely how this thing works.

An update on my 135i now after 1350 miles. It just gets better, I now have my 2nd tank of Vpower so all the crap fuel has gone and the engine is loosening up a bit now. It rips through 1st, 2nd and 3rd before you can blink. I still recon this car will get to 60 before it hits 5 seconds. I can't wait to get about 3000 miles on it and see what it is like then.

You need to host them some where and then link to them.

Run picture hosting through google and you'll get loads of free options of sites that will hosts pictures for you and allow you to link to them

Here is a cool 135 i saw here on a trackday

Talked to the Danish owner and it was tuned to 367hp and torque 480nm by a company called Steinbauer

Can only imagine what 135i will go like remapped, I'd have to do it but then I am a 'serial remapper'.

Regarding the earlier negative comments from some of the more reputable mags we still have to remember its just the journalists opinion on the day, I found the 135i to be great fun with a particularly playful rear end, the performance was amazing with a slight edge over the 335i I suspect due to the weight advantage, regarding the looks well that old cliche "beauty is in eye of the beholder" - before anyone starts I'm talking about optical eyes not brown eyes !!

IMO Audi hold the title for best interior quality, BMW for balance and entertainment, again all depends what you are looking for - come winter I'm sure my opinion will differ :)

Does make you wonder........
I will see what it is like when nice and loose, maybe try a decent air filter and see what that does and then look at the mapping route. I don't want to self destruct the engine, so i will wait until some 135's have put some serious miles on post mapping before I do it.

What for so you can admire the back of it.

Remember with a map/piggyback & exhaust they can push out 420bhp and are only 60/65kg heavier than the s3.

1900 miles now and getting better all the time.

The "Grin factor" is back :superman:. I have been to Exeter and to Brands Hatch this weekend and on both trips have got 32 MPG with a mixture of a few spirited sprints, good cruising speeds and a number of 1st gear crawls for 20 mins each time. You can't ask for more than than Eh ? It also costs me £20 per month less to insure and get this, it will be in a lower road tax bracket than the S3..........:p

Oh no it isn't - not at 220g/km! Same as S3 banding... More here.
LOL definitely not. I hope Simon didn't base his purchase decision on CO2 output!

I should now mention the new S3 and S3 Sportback is 199g/km and 201g/km respectively.

:nyah:

I thought the S3 was higher from memory, but I stand corrected. I do remember reading it is lower than the 335i with the same engine and will be £210 per year as opposed to £400 for the 335i, maybe I was a bit confused as I thought the S3 was going to be £400 too.:sorry:

I don't really think comparing the S3 and 135i is ever going to give a clear winner seeing as they're such different animals....
The S3 is pretty much accepted to be the better looking of the two, better interior (visually) and has more predictable, planted handling due to 4WD.... but the 2.0TFSI unit is nowhere near the standard of the 3.0 BMW bi-turbo. That thing has no flat spots, no lag and pulls solidly throughout the rev range including at very low revs where it seems to have as much torque as a derv. Also the BMW 50/50 weight distribution with RWD makes it the clear winner as a thrilling drivers car.

The same argument applies to pretty much every BMW and Audi comparison. e.g. 335i vs S5

You are correct, but you are going to be in trouble saying that on here :)

Maybe so but as car fans (not just Audi fans) you'd have to be in denial to deny certain facts!
I was having a bit of a debate with a guy i know on saturday night. He's just taken delivery of an S5. He took great offence when i suggested Audi had set out to beat the 335i M-Sport and failed on ever front other than the cabin ambience.... :blow:

By the way Spin... Where are your photos??!!

But people are loyal to the marques they drive. While I agree with what your saying I can understand the Audi drivers arguing the toss.

What I don't agree with is the sweeping statements that the majority seem to come out with about other marques and BM's in particular (on the forum as a whole most of the 8p chaps seem to be fairly rounded)
