Guys,

I am looking at getting a new facelift S3 and was just looking for some opinions on getting the windows tinted.

Should I go for the manufacturer tints or do them after market?

Cheers!

all down to cost i guess, aftermarket i would think you would get more choice in what shade of tint etc..have a look at some work they have done and see what kind of workmanship it is.....ya pays ya maney and ya takes ya choice :)

I agree that the factory tint is a bit too dark. My local dealer has an SB in Black with the black grille and factory tints. It looks like a hearse in my opinion. The dealer says he can't sell it because it doesn't have aircon, but I suspect it is because it looks like something Herman Munster would drive.

I got mine done aftermarket. Went for a 30% tint.

This is the view from the inside. As you can see, it is not dark at all.

That doesn't look very legal? What's the limit these days and was that 30% on top of the standard Audi glass? Anyone know what %age tint the A3 comes out of the factory with?

Front Windscreen and front windows tinting is not allowed full stop according to the UK law, you are allowed any level of tints behind the B Pillar though. How well these are enforced I dont know as I dont have tinted windows.

Edit: Unless they changed it in the last few years then I stand corrected.

Yeah....this is the reason I am looking for opinions. I don't think it looks right to have the rears tinted so much and then only the Audi standard spec windows at the front......it seems a bit unbalanced looking.

So, is it a definite that you cannot tint the fronts anymore than the standard factory spec?

hi

having the rear windows tinted on my a3 sportback tommorow it is akoyo silver, what do reckon would be a good tint to have ie, 30% or 40% etc, dont wanna make it look like a herse or pimped out ride.... Its more to shade the rear of the car as much as to look good....?????

cheers

According to a couple of TV police programmes recently if you tint the front windows beyond the current legal level and you are stopped your problems start. If the tinting is by a film you can be made to remove the film before you are allowed to continue your journey. If the tinting is within the glass the police and take the car away to a compound until you arrange to get new glass fitted. Is it work the risk?

I got mine done recently and went for the 30% tint. I thought it was just the right amount for the colour of my car and am really happy with them.

See the "30% Tints" link in my signature for some photos.

EDIT: don't know how I ended up posting again in the same thread with the same information. I need to learn to read the whole thread rather than just scrolling to the last entry!

go for the rear factory tints. my s3 has these. then i just got the fronts tinted to match.

the reason i am saying get them done by audi as they actualy fit the car with tinted glass this looks so much better than a film being put on the back windows and rear screen as someone with a gud eye can spot the difference.

if you look at a car without rear tints they have a black border round the edge of the glass. when a film is put on they only cut to the shape of the bit that is needed not the whole window. this causes a border.

some cars dont have these borders but i know the a3 8p do. cos i cud tel the diference between mine and ma m8s.

hope every1 understands. will try an put sum pics of my car up.

I know what you mean by that. It is not that they cut the film to the border it is that the film cannot stick to the dot matrix bits around the edges so they then cut them back to that point.

I know some people who had theirs done and they had the big white looking strip around the edge so I was concerned that mine would look the same when I was getting them done. The dude who did mine was able to run the film right to the edge and get it to stick to the dot matrix bit so there is minimal white edging on my windows.

It is a real giveaway that they are aftermarket tints and you can tell the if the fitter took care with the install by the amount of white that shows up.

hi

here are a few pics that i promised. dint take too many as im getting the wheels and mirrors done to match the grill.also getting the bottom bits of the front and rear bumper done. so im gune take some pics when its all finishd.

That looks great, it's a good contrast to the paintwork, but I hope the police around you are lenient, as it's nowhere near being legal. But then again, I see you've got the plate to tell 'em what to do! ;)

always had my cars tinted. i just think it completes the look on a sporty looking car.

yeh they can read the plate. but dont think they'd be too happy if i told em to P!$$ 0FF.:scared2:

Dude, that cannot be legal? Is it?

Looks sweet!! Good job!!

Apologies for reviving an old thread guys but does anyone know what % tint Omars S3 has on the back? Really like it, getting mine done on wednesday!

They look almost limo.

Be careful when discussing tint %. It should mean % of light that passes through. Ie 75% lets 75% of light through.
But some places list it as darkness, so 75% would let 25% light through.

Limo is around 5% light transmission.

Law is 70 or 75% on front side windows. Check as I can't right now. But pretty sure it's around there.
So basically by law, you can barely tint front windows at all.
But unless you take the ****, you can normally get away with a bit more.

Yeah don't worry Im steering clear of tinting the fronts. Also with regards to % Il just say 20%/80% whatever is the darker measurement. Thought they might be limo but on the top couple of pics you can see through a bit. Thinking maybe 80 or 90?
