MFSW to FBMFSW

Was going to take it, but £300 was my limit....Plus I wasn't sure what the story was with the different connector mattandrew mentioned. Might have a look at the one in the classifieds - only thing is my car isn't DSG (but does have the S-Line MFSW). Would there be any issues with fitting the DSG version, apart from the having to explain to people that the paddles don't actually do anything!

lol. You would have need the connector to make the multifunction buttons on the wheel work. I'd wait Marc, theres loads of non DSG one ebay, it just a case of right place at the right time, just leave the money in the bank

The connector above the yellow plug that is the one for the multi function and DSG

So does this lead (or a similar one without the DSG bit) mean you could fit the Multi-function flat bottom wheel to an S3/A3 that has a standard non multi-function / non flat wheel?

Like I said, I wasn't sure what "extras" would be needed, so I didn't bother. I'm in no rush to change it over, so I reckon holding out for a non-DSG one, as you say, is the best bet - probably be slighty cheaper than the DSG one too.

I think you'll still need the new steering wheel ECU to let you use the MF buttons. The ECU for DSG and MF is the same, so if you have DSG you can add the MFSW without the need to purchase the new ECU.

Not for sure, I have DSG but needed a new ECU but my A3 is a 2004.

Yes you can, BUT you may need a new steering wheel ECU and slip ring like I did, depends if you have cruise, It would be helpful if someone near by had VAGCOM to check what controllers you already have, where are you located!

I am not 100 % if its a different lead if you dont have the DSG (both the DSG and MF use the same plug, so prob the same lead)

Thanks for that Matt - I'm actually looking at used S3's at the moment so don't actually have the car. A lot of the cheaper ones have the standard wheel when I really want the flat bottomed one, hence the question. I did a search on old threads and someone made a post that the multi-fuctions gets its, erm, multi function from the can bus...? Which sounded promising..

my mistake - if you want to retrofit cruise control and have the MFSW you don't need a new ECU as the one ECU does both cruise and MF.

There probably is some sort of additional ECU jobbie for the DSG too.

There would appear from the earlier posts to be a different adapter lead depending on whether you have MF and\or DSG.

JamS3 bought a non DSG one from ebay, he was the one who opened my eyes upto really. But these wheels do go for around the £300 mark. Well worth it in my opinion. But yeh at least your a sensible man and didn't rush into anything :applaus: you're not a dumbass all guns blazing kinda guy! I like it :respekt:

hi n8kow

Does your mulitfunction light up aswell?

Thanks

Alisdair

lights up aswell...

will take piccys of mine when i find my digital cam!

Im new on here and just looking at S3's at the min, ive seen a few in the right price range but im struggling to find one with the fbmfsw, the car im looking at is multifunction non dsg. what i want to know is can the wheels still be gotten easily and is it the same lead as above that i would need to make everthing work? also is the lead an audi genuine part?

Cheers fellas.

It should light up fine, I have just done a standard to FBMFSW conversion on an A3. I need the new controller module as well.

That seems to be the case with alot of the sellers it seems that the airbags are taken from vehicles without the MFSW controls, so as craigs say a new cable is required. When I fitted Nathans he had to buy the new cable

Think its the same lead if you dont have DSG as it uses the same plug

So I fitted the TT FBMFSW to the A3 today, swapped the controller for a rev F and had to manually wire up the MF controls as my airbag came without them and the part is currently on back order.

Wheel all works after coding etc, lights, volume etc.

I added the BT prep and coded that up, all works a treat, phonebook access and voice control.

BUT, the steering angle and ABS needs to be recoded to fix the adaptation errors.

So anyone have the procedures for the A3/S3. I have the A4 ones and I think they are the same, but I will have to do it over the weekend.

mmm, so i'd need: the wheel with airbag; lead; VAGcom & now a new controller too :(

Anybody know the cost of the controller?

guess I will have to save, by then maybe the S3 FBMFSW without paddles will be circulating :sm4:

Sensor for Steering Angle (G85)

Prerequisites:
  • Start the vehicle.
  • Turn the steering wheel one turn to the right and one turn to the left.
  • Drive in a short distance straight line on a level surface at a speed not higher than 20 km/h.
  • If the steering wheel is straight during the test drive then stop the vehicle with the wheels pointed straight.
  • Ensure that the steering wheel is not moved again.
  • Keep the engine running and do not switch off the ignition.
  • System voltage at least 12.0 V.
[Select]
[44 - Steering Assist]
[Coding-II - 11] or if that function is not available then use [Sec.Access - 16] instead
Enter 40168, to enable the basic setting.
[Do it!]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 060
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]
After a successful basic setting, field 1 should say "OK".
[Done, Go Back]
To make sure the basic setting was succesful, check the sensor again.
[Measuring Blocks - 08]
Group 007
[Go!]
Check field 1, the value has to be between -1.5 and +1.5 °.
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Note: After successful basic setting, the Steering Limit Stop needs to be adapted too.

Special Procedures

Steering Limit Stop Adaptation

(Engine still running)
  • Center steering wheel (±10°) and hold it centered for 5 seconds.
  • Turn steering wheel completely to the left and hold it there for a second.
  • Turn steering wheel completely to the right and hold it there for a second.
  • Center steering wheel (±10°).
  • Switch OFF engine and ignition.
  • Switch ON ignition.
  • Wait 5 seconds.
  • Steering Assist Warning Lamp should turn OFF. If it doesn't, perform a short test drive.
I used the above and it worked fine, remember to follow all steps.

Did you fit a new slip ring then?

Many thanks for that Matt, I will give it a go when I'm next with the car.

I didn't fit a new slip ring, just the controller module.

Yes it was a new 08 car, the MFSW works fine, it's just the controller didn't support the mFSW option so it had to be changed.

I actually priced a new controller with VAGParts yesterday. STG£94.54 ex VAT, ex shipping and ex the ASN discount. That's for 8P0 953 549 F or 8P0 953 549 J.

I priced them over here last night with my dealer and they are both €254.48 ex VAT (or STG£201 at today's exchange rate). Twice the ****** price!!

I was checking the price because I might have to install cruise for a friend into their A3 and wanted to see what the cost of the ECU was just in case I need it. I'll hook VAGCOM up to the car tonight to check the ECU version that he has.

Just looked at invoice for mine 8P0 953 549 F list price ex VAT is £104.21 and I got my discount on top of that. THe price you got does not make sense.

A lot of the electrical parts are more expensive in Ireland than the UK. My RS4 start button pieces were half price up north too. Not sure why that is because they all come out the same gate at the factory. Although, having said that, my facelift taillights were in or around the same price. Usually I will price any parts with VAGParts, a dealer in the north and a dealer down here and buy from wherever is cheapest (obviously after adding in the cost of shipping from VAGParts or the cost of fuel to drive to Belfast to pick whatever it is up).

Is there any difference between 8P0 953 549 F or 8P0 953 549 J ??

ye F says 4dr & J says 2dr, but thats upto an 8P5 chassis then it switches to 8P6 & shows the F version for 2 & 4dr cars, only other difference can see is they show to use different slip ring, C or D but then the 8P6 F version doesnt denote specific slip ring so guessing all the same from then on

I have 2dr with F version, works perfectly for me, yours has the F so is fine & slip ring will also be fine.

Ahh, but did you have a MFSW in the first place? Because the general concensus seems to be that cars without MFSW need the new control module when fitting a (FB)MFSW.

Where is this control module?

No I didnt have the wheel before, I actually bought the F version & new slip ring & changed mine over & as I've already advised you James cars from 05 onwards whether they have the MFSW or not come fitted with compatible module & slip ring!!!

If you look at etka it shows the F version from 8P5 onwards which denotes 05 cars, yours is 07

Yours is compatible, what is it that you dont believe me saying, why would I lie if you were gonna buy a wheel from me, doesnt do me any favours does it, thats why I rang audi for you & checked your vin for whats installed!!!
