headlight upgrade, is this the right choice...?

Rich, I'm currently building a B5 RS4 sedan, engine, tranny and all OEM bodywork, car's in the botyshop right now. (See Project B5 RS4 Sedan in B5 section).

I'm installing genuine RS4 HID projector headlamps. I'm specifically interested in a HID kit for the main beam, I'm aware my ability to "flash" oncoming traffic will be reduced, due to Xenon slower reaction, but I'm addressing this with an additional halogen unit in each headlamp.

What 6000k kit would you recommend from your range, and how much? Thanks.

Hey, Rich! haven't heard from you regarding the kit mentioned above??

Lol, Rich, no worries. Will sort out HID kit elsewhere, no shaking.

i think you should just send him a pm ;)

I did, 3 days ago, but with no response, I've had to re-post on here. No way of telling if he's received the PM, but I'd have thought he'd check a thread he's got an interest in...

I have recently ordered a set of Facelift headlights for my A3 from german ebay. when they arrived i realised that there is no way of adjusting the beam for driving in this country, and therefore will not pass an MOT if I fit them. I was wondering out of the people here who have ordered lights from germany, how many are capable of being adjusted for RHD?

I did it too! makes the car look so much better!

I also had to cut some metal and plastic off where the wing attatches to the bumper guide to get them to fit, but was worth it in the end....

Also....for all you people having trouble with your headlights shaking or moving, id recommend this kit from ebay germany, you get a bracket that mounts underneath your headlight, all bolts to fit it, and a connector, wiring set and heatshrinks to complete the conversion, its all there. The brackets are really easy to fit aswell and my headlights are rock solid.

Im really happy with the mod, makes the front end look so much better.

looks nice :)

do you have a pic of the kit from Germany?

and where exactly does it fit?

I dont have any pics of the kit unfortunetely, but you get more than enough things to do the full conversion (wires, connectors, bolts etc...) it fits in underneath the headlight, one bolt goes throught the hole at the bottom of the headlight and the other side of the bracket goes onto the whole where the old headlight fixes in underneath. You do have to drill one of the holes in the bracket yourself, which is easy enough. :w00t:

hi guys i just wanted to know about the HID kits, Im looking at getting facelifted a3, but want to put a 6k HID kit on it, is it easy, and pass the mot? or is it more hassle than its worth?

very easy to fit.

just fitted one to mine. 6k from vision perfomance. £65 delivered

will past MOT no problem for the facelift ones since they are projector type.

You can get it properly aligned at your MOT center.

do you have any pics of your car?

What bulb fitting are your HID's? I ordered the H7 kit after looking on a website where you choose your car and it tells you which fitting it is (because i was too lazy to look at the light!) and when i went to fit it, it turns out to be a H1 bulb for dipped beam! Doh! So ive got a H7 Bosch HID kit lying around having to order a H1 version haha! :asskicking:

I have the H1 HID....most sellers think they are H7...lol...don't know why.

I got mine from visionperformance at £65 delivered.

can any one tell me how to ask a question i have a 210 s3 and wanted to know the best way to get more power is it via chipping also i have noticed on e bay 20% more bhp via a part that goes in your air box for abu ot a fiver is this crap :sadlike:

I have got my RHD facelift lights finaly. I also have the wiring kit necessary to do the conversion. I was just wondering if the headlight adjuster moters for the original lights will fit to the new facelift lights? The lights are made by depo, i dont know if that makes any difference?

Fitted my facelift lights yesturday and just finished up the wiring today. I am very pleased with the results, makes the front of the car look so much better! next job...facelift rear lights, as soon as funds permit:cool:

Hi,

Been through the thread but can't find a link to the german ebay seller. Is this where people are going to get their lights still?

go to your local breakers, or ebay.

They come up very often on ebay..where I got mine :)

be careful ordering lights from Germany! Dont want to end up with LHD lights like i did:faint: although some are capable of being swiched over to RHD, not all are to make sure you check...

there was a german seller on ebay (from early in the thread) who sold really cheap lights. I bought my rears from him. Not sure if he's still around though.

Just fitted the face lift xenons to my s3,
For anyone considering this i found that all wiring between the 2 was the same with the exception of the adjuster motors,
as i was not about to start cutting up my wiring loom i managed to swap the motors out of my old lights so it was all plug and play,
just thought i would add this as the thread is showing a difference between the main light wiring connector which on the xenons is not the case,
However the cutting of the wing is still necassary.
Just thought i would add this as this thread has helped me i hope this will help someone else
Cheers, Keith

excellent, just what i needed to know :)

Nice find! Im after a set myself, but have to find myself an angle grinder first lol

Good luck on the upgrade and let us know how it goes!

I'm finally going to get round to doing this in the next couple of weeks.

Just wondering whether the bracket referred to in Post 91 was required as no one else has commented on the lights being wobbly afterwards.

Found another link for the set on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Audi-A3-S3-Fa...4584336QQcmdZViewItem?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

What sort of connecters are included too? Thanks

I don't have the bracket and up to now working fine. BUT there is a slight vibration/movement on very bumpy roads.

I think a small DIY bracket will fix the problem.

The connetcors are readily available at your local dealer :)

Hi Pete,

The parts you need are:

Universal Yellow wires with crimped connectors - 000 979 133 (x4)
Black 4 pin Plugs - 1J0 973 724 (x2).

Firstly, the wires come double ended, so you chop them in half, that gives you 8, 4 per side. For Main beam, dipped beam, side lights and Ground.

Now when you remove the old headlights, you will notice that the plug on the light unit is a twist fit, into the headlight itself. If you remove this, and the wiring from the old units, you use make a loom to save chopping the existing wiring in the vehicle. Its the safer option!!

First you need to make note of which color wire goes to which bulb so that you get it correct with the new ones. You will also need to do the same with the new units so you know which pin on the new plug, needs to go to which color on the old loom.

I chopped the bulb connectors off the old loom, and soldered them to the new wires, and the attached the new plug. protected the osldered joints with heatshrink, and then wrapped the entire loom in self amalgamating tape to waterproof it.

Here is a pic of the finished product.

This connects to the OEM loom, and then you simply plug it into the new headlight housing.

Removing the material from the inner wing is easy enough. I used an angle grinder with a cutting disk to remove the majority of the material, and then used a grinding disc to smooth it all and finish it up. I suggest using hammerite to rust proof the raw metal as you dont want it rusting!

here are some pics of the finished product

Any questions, just shout!

Those are 6000k HID's fitted to the lights.

Rich

#You say about the twist fit bit..

Basically, I've got a Pre facelift and some Facelift Xenones, But i don't have the old units due to angels being fitted...

If i get the above listed part numbers, I'll still need the end of the plug that plugs into the car loom itself if that makes sense...

Do you have a part number for this?
I can't get one because i don't have the existing lights :(

Sooo want to get these fitted though!
Cheers

hey guys. just got a quick question. basicly i have a 1999 pre face lift A3 turbo and having read this thread im thinking of doing a headlight conversion.
if i fit some Audi A3 S3 8L Xenons Facelift 99-03
would i be right in saying id need to cut out a small part of the wing to fit them like hte pics show and would i need this too?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=180287809554

what about the headlight level adjusters. would they still adjust ok?

Still after a set of facelift headlights for my pre facelift A3.

Anyone have some? Please PM me... money is waiting :p

Check for break a3 on ebay. guy offered me the front facelifts and rear facelift for £110....

Damn you got luck then :(
The only ones I can find are stupid angel light ones or the R8 ones :(

Im now selling mine.
From an S3, with Xenons and Ballasts etc.
New set of bulbs, and I've also made the looms already to plug straight in and tested them.
They're on ebay here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250314975447 if any of you are interested, they seem pretty sought after - First come first serve, just offer me.
Car might have to go and so i don't need them any more.

are all S3 ones Xenon? Im looking to upgrade my lights on a 1997 1.8 SE but not sure which are straight fit as I dont want to start hacking at my wings like Ive read on afew post now.
Any advice please?
