Have tried this post under the A4 and tuning sections, but still haven’t found anyone who’s had this done.
Just wandered if any A3 owners have had a chip, remap or bluefin or similar done on a 2.0TDi 170 Quattro?
Looking for some real life feedback / recommendations from individuals not from companies offering there services (but thanks anyway)!
If so what BHP / torque increase? and cost?
I heard there was problems with chipping these engines, something to do with the DPF(Diesel particulate filter)?

Any comments?

Thanks

Keef

lil_coz has had his 170 Quattro remapped.

He is the only person on here that I am aware of with it done

Thanks for the reply - I'll try and track 'lil_coz' down then!

Hey Keef. As Matt said, I've had it done and I'd say that it is deafinately worth doing if you're after some extra oomph! Figures are around 200bhp and 323lbs ft (438nm) of torque.

I've as yet to experience any problems with regards to DPF. I've only had the light come up once or twice but that was because I was doing short journeys for quite a while and it got all clogged up. This was within the first 3 months of ownership. Didn't effect engine or performance at all, it was just the light on the dash that come up. 5 mins on the motorway clears things up nicely and all was well again. Never had it happen since.

I've had the remap done from new at the dealers and had no problems at all (coming up to 6K miles now). I also haven't experience any clutch slip so far. It probably also worth mentioning that I drive around normally 75-80% of the time so I dont know how it'll be affected if its been driven like your hair's on fire all the time.

MPG is probably better when driven sensibly. I once saw 58mpg on a 45mile drive to Daventry. That was me doing a Clarkson so see what it could do. Average drive on motorways is easily mid 40's.

Drivability is obviously a lot better because you have a shed load more torque which you'll notice on motorways.

Price wise, they usually charge 700+vat... so not cheap at all! But because I bought the car from them and I asked them to do it for me, I only paid £500 all in. Service was pretty good too because they called my car back to have an update on the remap FOC.

I think I've covered everything...

Needless to say I'm very happy with the way my car is!

A friend of mine has had his Octavia 170 mapped, by Simon @ E-maps, with no problems, whatsoever, and he's covered over 10k since. Plus it was only £350!!!

I had mine done (non-quattro) 5000 miles ago and no problems at all . Blue-fin, they claim around 197bhp but I've never put it on a rolling road.

Also mine is s-tronic and (touch-wood) no gear box problems but I spoke to Superchips long and hard about it and they said their warranty would cover the gear box if Audi refused if anything went wrong as a result of the re-map.

I've just blufined my Stronic 140 and the mid range poke is much better, the rate that it heads to 3 figures is amusing, god only knows what it would be like in a 170bhp car !

Many thanks for the detailed reply!
Wish I could say I was as impressed with this engine in the A4
but unfortunately I’m not hence the remap / chip enquires!
Currently in debate with dealership and customer service over the expected performance and MPG, but that’s another story!
Like you say £700 + Vat isn’t cheap – but if it transforms (hopefully) a £30k dull car that I may be stuck with, it’s a small price to pay!
Have also been lookin into Bluefin as well!

Thanks all

Cheers

With bluefin I think you can still get them on the 7 day trial + you'll get forum discount, might be worth it to see if it makes a difference

No problem.

I haven't driven the 170 as standard (as I said it was done from new) so I have no reference of how a normal 170 is. I dont think I've heard of anyone in an A3 complain with performance but then again it is lighter than an A4! The remap should give nice slab of extra torque which should sort that out. If you go to Richter directly (speak to Craig), you should get it cheaper. Audi usually charge more to make some money from it too.

I've read stories about the trials that you get. When it reverts back to 'stock' after the 7 days, it actually produces less power that when you first took it there. That way you think that there's a bigger difference with the map on and you go and buy it.
