Guys, just a quick one as I'm on my way out to work.

The fiancee just read in the newspaper that a hail storm in Germany has caused damage to THOUSANDS of VAG cars awaiting shipping and this could cause "weeks or months" of delays for people waiting on cars!!!

No doubt we will learn more on the situation throughout the day.

Not good!

Most UK cars are built in Belgium though aren't they?

Still a shame mind.

Sportbacks are built in Belgium, 3 doors are built in Ingolstadt, Germany.

However, it looks like only VW were affected.. :kissmyrings:

30,000 brand new Volkswagen's were damaged by a severe hailstorm outside of a VW factory in Emden, Germany.

The cars were all awaiting delivery to foreign as well as domestic customers when they were struck by a storm of ping-pong sized hail.

According to Volkswagen Spokesman Christoph Adomat, there is no estimate to the cost of the damage, however speculation is north of $100 million. Over 100 VW workers will be pulled from assembly plants across Germany to inspect the damage of each car under special lighting.

Adomat's statement regarding the damage was "“No car will leave unless it is 100-per-cent free of damage.” Also, yes, VW was insured against hail damage.

Are you sure? I remember someone saying that you can tell by your chassis number and from what they said mine was built in Belgium too. It was a 3 door A3.

Also I'm pretty sure there's no factory in or near Emden.

EDIT: Yes you're right sorry, they make Passats there. Not a very big factory.

It's a port where German cars are loaded up for shipment. Porches are also stored there. I've been there and I saw at least a thousand of them.

All Sportbacks are built in Ingolstadt, some 3 door are built in Belgium some in Ingolstadt. I know coz I`ve seen it.:w00t:
There is VW factory in Emden. Only VW cars were damaged by the storm.

My girlfriend bought me t trip to Munich for my birthday some months back along with tickets to visit and tour the Audi factory and Museum in Ingolstadt - it was pretty amazing stuff and as far as i could see and from what the tour guide was telling us was that all A3's are made in the Ingolstadt factory, S3's and all (S3 engines arn't made there though coz i made a point of asking him!!).

All in all, it was well worth the trip - i must post the photo's up actually. Couldnt take photos in the factory though as it was all 'top secret stuff' haha!!!

Dad mentioned this yesterday. He has a Sportback on order for 1st September. We thought they were built in Belgium so should be unaffected?

All Audi engines are made in Hungary.

Newbie here. I ordered my new A3 on Friday. The dealer mentioned the hailstorm as the reason why the new-look A3 they were expecting last week hadn't arrived. Mind you, he also made that the reason for the non-arrival of the new (June 2008) A3 brochures - which apparently were supposed to arrive in a job lot with the car!

Read previous posts mate. Sportbacks are made only in Ingolstadt and only VW cars were affected by storm!!

That's not actually true. Quite a number of Sportbacks are now built at the Audi plant in Brussels.

To view a short film showing the Brussels plant and some Sportbacks in production go to this site: http://tv.audi.com/ and click the 'Behind the scenes' button and click to Play the 'One year Audi in Brussels'. The VW Polo is also built in Brussels and will be the new Audi A1.

I asked around here and apparently this city was hit by the storm too and many cars here were damaged. I wasn't here at the time.

If all those VWs were affected then so should the Porsches have been!

I`am not dennying that. I was referring to VAG cars as it is VW not Audi factory. Some people here have been warried about delays in their orders.

Just to give you some idea of the damage those cars will have received, yesterday in a car park I saw a Nissan Micra with literally hundreds of 1p sized dents on it's roof and bonnet.

So only 900 being Audi, hopefully my week 32 build will still stand!

Saying that it went confirmed build week 32 only back end of last week so suppose the storm being on the 22nd my car wont be affected!
