For you techies out there... go on and find the answer!

Why doesn't the Haldex works the other way around... Why isn't it applied on a rear wheel drive car... having permanent rear wheel drive and only sendind power to the front when required?

Would that work at all?

Pedro

Yes it does work - thats exactly how cars like Lamborghini Murcilargo & Gallardo use a version of the haldex system.

Thats isnt how it works and the Bugatti Veyron uses a Haldex coupling to shift power forward in varying amounts.

What are the specific differences between Gen I and Gen II and how would I find out which version mine has ? Very interested in this.

If you have an S3 8P, your upgrade will be the HPP Gen II.

I have the Gen II on my S3.

It is worth every penny IMO, you really feel the difference, especially on low grip surfaces and at the track.

I'm a bit lost here ,all 8P S3's and MKV R32's have the GEN II as Std. The 8L S3 and the MKIV R32 had the GEN I controler.

We can upgrade to the GEN II HPP controler.

Is this correct?

p

I had the upgrade on my R32, well woth the upgrade if you push the car hard. Still majority FWD but it comes in sooner and harder than the stock unit.

Yes, correct, my mistake.
I usually refer to the HPP controller as "the gen II"

It is a unit with a blue cover that replaces the original one. With the proper cable it can work in three different ways: Normal, Sport and Race.

Yeah thats right , or you can just have it in sport mode by default.

As you had one , if you go for the S3 would you get the GEN II HPP again for it?

From what i know the 8P/MkV controller is better than the 8L/MkIV controller.

Do you know of anyone who has has the HPP mod on an 8P S3 ? I've searched the Forums but can't find one. Would be interested in this - I bet you could really feel it at track days.

I will go for it again! It basically gives you a little bit more of a shove from the rear. Why Haldex don't sell the product like that in the first place I really do not know!

Is it easy to install ? And where were you put the switch ?
Thanks
The install is plug and play, really easy, I did it myself.
I still have the cable with the switch in the boot but, with some friends, we are preparing a dedicated button with a microchip to be installed on the dashboard, in the row of ESP and tyre pressure control.

Sorry to ask the obvious (if it is obvious) - where did you buy from ? Haldex themselves ?

Good idea. Needs a thread you think ? Apparently the fitting is not quite plug and play - bit fiddly - but maybe Macs could confirm if we'd need garage time for fitting or if its easy to a DIY job ?

You simply need to lift the back of the car on a couple of jack stands.
Disconnect the cable. Unscrew the bolts, remove the original unit and remove the actuator that remains in. At this point some oil will drain, just a very small quantity, no need to refill.
Then you insert in the HPP unit the actuator and the sensor and then rebolt it back in place.
You reconnect the cable and the job is done!

If you buy the switch cable (strongly recommended IMO), there is a hole in the boot with a rubber cap just above the unit that is perfect to pass the cable in the boot.

How much is the cable on top the HPP unit?

I was thinking about the idea of getting a custom switch/button to put in one of the spare buttons next to the ESP , just a cheap thing with 3 led's on it that move to the next setting when you press it. normal , sport , race.

With my Club we are preparing something like that.
It's a button exactly in the same style of the ESP one. It has HPP written on it and a small window in the upper left corner.
Il will be lighted like all the other buttons when you turn on the lights.
The window will be off in Normal, red in Sport and yellow in Race.

Good thinking Batman! :)

I'd just leave it in sport day to day anyway.

Here's a picture of the work in progress...

^^^^Looks good mate , keep us posted.

Will do...
We are experiencing some inconvenients probably due to interferences and electric peaks during the startup of the car. Hopefully will get them sorted in the next future...

Any chance of some comments about the feel of the car before and after the installation of the HPP..

Thanks

Important things first: forget to experience any change in day to day driving and forget power oversteering.

For how the S3 system is built, it is impossible to have the rear wheels spin faster than the front ones, so no power oversteer.

In low grip conditions (road has to be very cold, or damp, or (even better) wet) you will experience a tendency to "close" the corner when you apply power, but you have to apply it all of a sudden, and even so you will not need to countersteer, just decrease a bit of the steering angle.

On the snow the car will be more predictable but, again, to have it oversteer you will need to go really fast, and on snow it's not healthy...

It dramatically changes the way the car drives, but only when you are close to the limit. At that stage, it literally throws you out of corners and delivers faster laptimes.

When you are in the middle of a corner, with all the tyres squealing and you hammer it down, you clearly feel the back of the car commiting to deliver everything to the road and the car starts to slide a bit on the four wheels, and there you go, towards the next corner with a big grin on your face.
You will soon forget that nasty understeer when you apply power out of a corner.

Thanks for that, kind of what I had expected.. :)
