Dirty Derv thoughts!

Not sure if the 535d has the same bi-turbo unit as the 335d. All i know is that the 335 diesel is rated as one of the best engines BMW have ever made and i can assure you it doesn't sound like a tractor, just loads of low grunt, whistling turbos and enough torque to push you through the back window.

It's all about the thrust.:undwech:
Their respective combinations of power,torque and gearing means that it's entirely feasible the tdi makes as much thrust as the S3, in the lower gears.
 
I dont think the Diesel could replace that punch in the back from the S3 when you drop the clutch at 4k rpm. thats some serious grip and acceleration, amazes me every time!

And the Diesel wont do 165Mph :arco:


But thats me Phantom, everyones different and if the Deisel works better for you, you should go for it
 
On a side note, it'll be interesting to see the difference between me and the S3's on the Switzerland trip. I know an S3 would leave me for dead (especially the boys that are Hammered with over 100bhp more than me!) but everyone is going on about running costs and with diesel 10p more that petrol per litre. Will be interesting to see how much we pay for petrol because we would have all covered the same mileage.
 
It's always a nice can of worms the diesel v petrol debate :)

I've always driven diesels and I have to admit that when I had a 1.8T when mine was in getting sorted, it was a nice change to drive a petrol and have the high revs. It's a different drive altogether though - the power is higher up the rev range as opposed to the low end torque in a diesel.

Still, it's good to hear your views P coming from an S3.

You should easily keep up, we won't be pushing too hard, and your mpg will be roughly double!
 
Personally I now there are outstanding diesels and outstanding petrols... It is a matter of personal choice really. I like the way a petrol drives and the higher revs...

Somehow they are trying to make diesels as smooth and refined as petrols... I wonder why?

We went on a driving holiday with another (petrol driving) couple once.
I got so hacked off with them having to stop to refuel all the time, when I still had hundreds of miles left.
It got to the stage I just said "see you there"
It was nullifying the biggest advantage I had and dragging me down to their level.:keule:
 
Let's get this right , i'm not saying a TDI is better/just as good as my S3 , coz it isn't IMHO..........pulling away from lights or overtaking on or off the M/way day to day on a commute i wouldn't miss the S3 , and the TDI has got alot going for it running cost wise.

Then it goes dark and it's play time and the TDI couldn't live with the S3 end of errand.

Summut to think about though in the future.

That is an inconvenient... I agree... especially on long trips...

But is like having a sexy girlfriend... you just have to live with the fact that lots of blokes are going to look at her... just don't get upset about it! ahahah

Oh normal driving/pushing on a little, it'll keep up no problem. Its when you open up the taps fully where i'll be dropping back. I'm not expecting it to be like that all the time otherwise you'll be stopping at every other petrol station! lol Its overall petrol costs that'll be interesting to see for everyone. V6's S3's and the TDI's.

Should you have not been stopping for breaks anyway? I bet they weren't stopping every half-an-hour. I'm not sure diesel cars were invented so you could drive 8-9 hours non-stop. :whistle2:

I'm happy doing a lot more than that in one go.

Actually, I don't even think they were getting 250-300 miles.
Probably nearer 200 miles to a tank, at motorway speeds.

Apart from the FBSW what makes the interior of the S3 any different to an Sline?
 
Well mines different, ive got the optional bucket seats, the upgraded steering wheel, s3 badges well placed to let you know you are driving the creme de la creme!!!

So knock a second off, that's it down to 6.8s.
Add in someone who can't launch an S3 properly (many people are scared they'll trash their clutch), and you've got a race.:sly:

Well i for one would love to see a tuning chip knock a whole second off your 0-60 time.

Please, show me the evidence and i'll condede to that point. But even so, still at 7 seconds, at which point any S3 driver whos not scared about burning his clutch... Infact, lets take the silly variables out, ANY S3 driver will be well in front. So back to my original point, there is no race... :gaehn:

The diesel car makes you feel you're travelling fast, I know, I had one. But the fact is, its just not that fast :)

Not sure about the arches, but there is a lot more aluminium on the S3, and better brakes, and obviosuly that engine!

Oh, front and rear splitters too, not that they actually do anything!

Also my speedometer (which is in Km.. euro spec) marks 300Km/h!!!

Alluminium surrondings on air vents... and it is and feels like aluminium... not ****** plastic...

Mine are aluminium look! make of horrible plastic! the TT ones are much nicer.

Was more interested in the interior differences, so

S3 badges
Knob
Pedals
Vents

basically an A3 with a splash of chrome.........

Strange... my air vents sorrounding... the one you use to close or open the passage of air are definitly aluminium in mine.. they feel and sound like metal... but got take my doubts next time when in car... taking a scrwdriver with me!!

Strange that... The little holder to direct the air might be plastic but the sorroundings I would bet they are allu.. or at least metal...

For fun we just do 22 mpg... so who said S3 is not economical... all depends on your right foot... leave home 10 minutes earlier and you will see the savings... Also at rush hour what is the point of booting it? to hit the car in front?

You must be driving that seriously seriously gently to get that MPG!

I'm not going to pretend all out maximum attack a 170 is going to be with an S3 cos it isn't but even with a bit of brisk driving it'll do more than an S3 driven in the most economical fashion... I can live with the tractor noise (as some people seem to think it is) for the increase in MPG and accessible power.

If I did less miles and road tax wasn't going the way it is there is a good chance I'd be back in a petrol (maybe an S3 who knows!) but its not looking likely the way things are now.

Good that a hot hatch owner can acknowledge the benefits of other fuels :applaus: used to seeing general slating of them without people realising we choose our cars for different reasons.

lil coz - agree about the turbo noise with the window down, suprised me how loud it is!

What are the comparitive times for the TD 170?

The Audi Driver magazine did a road test on a 3-door 2.0TDI-170 quattro sport in the June 2007 issue. They did not give a 0-100mph figure but their 0-60 was 8.2 secs and 0-80 was 13.3 secs.

Also, more releveant to normal day-to-day driving the 30-50 figures were 3.4 secs in 3rd and 4.7 secs in 4th. The 50-70 figures were 4.7 secs in 4th, 5.8 secs in 5th and 7.0 secs in 6th.

Never said it was faster/slower, was genuinely interested in the differences as some people said it was a much better place to be, which suprised me as I didn't think there was much
 
Can't believe what I am reading, S3 V 170 Diesel, not sure about evil thoughts you have well and truely lost the plot matey it's 100bhp less power, crap noise, no revs, come on get real.
