V-Power has run out in surrey! I've tried 7 different Shell stations and there isn't a drop left! So I settled for BP Ultimate or what ever it's called. Set me back £63 for 50 litres :(

I normally try to ignore the what I'm paying at the pumps and just enjoy the car (averaging 22mpg since new) But I'm really starting to feel the pinch from fuel so I've decided to drive frugally for a while, managed to average 39.4mpg in the first 3 or 4 miles of this tank, it's going to be hard to keep up though! There was a civic type-r all over me on the way home, but I managed to resist!
 
I'm pretty lucky as I don't need my car for work most of the time (have to endure the tube instead!), but I have to admit if I was using my car for the commute I'd be feeling it by now. I've had the car just over 15 months, when I first got it it was just over £55 to fill up and as said it's now nearly a tenner more a tank!
This Government is going to the dogs man, robbing the average tax payer blind!
 
Didn't they have the contaminated fuel issue though???
Screwed everyone's injectors up???? Allegedly!!!

Derv , still shoudn't have happed if it did happed.

I read another test ( don't know where ) that said on testing Tesco99 was up to 102 ron.

Whats V-power 98ron?

the 99 rocks yer socks in tests, though personally I cant tell the difference from using shell to 99 tesco.

Could be interesting to see if theres a reflection on Prosport Saturday!

Was it just diesels???? I thought petrol was caught up in it too.... yep, just found this report from when it happened:

Granted, no doubt a one off, but enough to put me off using it.

Vpower is 99 ron mate.

Good opint from Kontraband - be intereting to find out who was using which fuels, see if there are any common trends?

Looking forward to hearing the results from the RR day
 
yep, me too... and I get more airmiles with tesco than shell so what I burn off in ripping the tarmac I get back to spend on my carbon footprint thru the air. ;)
 
No V-Power in Tyne & Wear area neither, not that Ive found anyway.

Had to fill up on BP Ultimate on Sunday (had about 1/4 tank of VPower still in). Cant say Ive noticed yet.

Neither can you get the 99RON Tesco stuff. I think there a superstore that does it in Teeside but thats an 80mile round trip !!

Must be true what they say.....Its grim up North...

PS - Im sure VPower is 98RON?.
 
I tend to fill up with either Tesco 99 or V Power and can't tell a difference TBH. Doesn't seem to be any shortage of either up in Edinburgh at the moment.

I've never found BP Ultimate as eager higher up the rev range and also find it's at least 3 or 4p more per litre as well :no:
 
I tried to fill up yesterday and both Tesco and Shell were out of their super stuff - could it be a coincidence that they are both 99 RON?
 
I get Super from tesco express, but thought it was only 97Rons. Do ron ron
 
I need to make a trip to dover tonight, but only left with 1/4 tank currently, pretty scared to go out now knowing there are many dry stations around :(

The standard super is 98, the 99 is only in certain stations. I posted a link in another thread somewhere... from greenergy.com or summat that told you the 99 stations.

Nope - it's deffo 99RON.
The old optimax was 98

well... I put the most expensive available... if it is only 97 I am surprised as in Portugal it is 100 ron the BP ultimate...

Having said that not noticed difference to the V power

Would like to try the tesco 99 stuff to see if its any better than Optimax, but can never find a tesco that sells it.
Has anyone got the location maps of garages selling tesco 99 - or know where a location map can be downloaded from ?

i filled up with bp ulitma from being dry of v power in coventry and iv noticed a massive difference. not at low speeds around town but on the mototrways my s3 (8l) if less responsive and "punchy" if that makes sense.
 
Well, approaching the end of my tank of BP Ultimate (needle just about touching the red) I've managed to do 414miles so far, and there is about 50 or so miles left (according to DIS) so thats ~475mile per tank, pretty good for a 300+bhp 4wd car :)

Just hope there is some V-Power in surrey when I go to fill up again!
 
I try to go on V Power all the time but in my local Shell station it has run out as well... (central london) but has I do the A3 to Portsmouth quite a lot... Liphook Shell station has always plenty!!!

I was talking to someone at work the other day who is into his sports cars and he is not that impressed with V-Power, he thinks his car doesn't quite run right, bit hesitant at times, or feels like its going to cut out... I've always had doubts about Shell fuel, as few cars I've owned have never felt quite right on V-Power, wasn't sure if it was the cars or just me, but after talking to quite a few people I'm not the only person to be having running issues with their fuel, issues that you probably wouldn't even notice or put it down to something else affecting the car on that day.


Has no one tried the Total Excellium fuel?? thats 99ron... and tbh is basically the same as Tesco 99 fuel ;) The fuel spec will be the same but the only difference that there may be is the additives that are in them, but this would not really have any effect on the performance of the fuel.

I tried Total Excellium once and I noticed a difference after a few tanks had gone through, think I'm going to stick with this fuel. I know that this fuel is top notch!! Working at a Total Refinery has its benifits for information about other refineries and products ;) lol


Tesco only had that problem with their fuel because of the storage company contaminating the fuel when it was in storage, nothing is wrong with the fuel that is produced for Tesco.
 
For me V-Power works very well... I don't care if I use V Power or not what I care is the octane rating...

Also there is a big fuss about brands.... most fuels come from the same oil refinery and maybe, maybe they get some additives later... but nothing that would make them fantastic...

Shell has serviced me well as has BP, Esso or Total... has long is the top fuel my car feels and drives happily without being hesitant at all...

When I put 95 ron it is noticiable but at higher revs only... but it is quite noticiable on mine...

Most petrol stations are supplied by the nearest refinery (Apart from Shell) all refineries blend the fuel to a specification, and then add the additives for cleaning your engine and all that fancy stuff, additives wont improve a fuels performance (ie RON/MON)

Putting 95 Ron fuel in an engine that is set up to run say 97 Ron will mean it is pre-igniting the fuel to early as it cant stand the compression from the piston like 97 Ron can so it wont do you engine any good in the long run.
 
I know that... that is why mine only gets what it needs......

But that pre ignition only happens at higher revs... the fuel ignites it self due to compression.... that is why high revving engines benefit a lot more from higher octane rating fuels and these don't ignite until the moment is right...

I don't really believe that Tesco has a "specification" blend... but OK you seem to be on the inside so I would assume that is the way it is.... each one has it's own blend.

Pre igniting won't do any harm to the engine, performance will drop and some deposits might develop but nothing really to worry... not in the modern cars. The only thing is because combustion happens before piston TDC the performance inevitably drops... more noticiable at higher revving engines.

On the other side a car set up to use 95 won't gain anything from using 99 ron...

But having said this... I would say modern cars would have variable electronic timing and would adapt to fuel octane rating by detecting knocking and adjust accordingly...But I am only assuming on this one...

Each car should use the fuel as intended by its designer... no brainer

Trying 95 ron fuel on my go kart that revs to 20000 can have dramatic effects...

All fuels are blended to a minimum specification... RON is giving as the main spec to fuels, higher ron = higher performance which is part true.

The fuel's 'blending components' are also the key to a fuels performance, its all really down to the amount of quality carbon-carbon bonds etc etc.

This is why running 99 Ron in a car designed to run 97 has improved performance, its got nothing to do with the RON, this just means 99 Ron can be compressed more. Its the quality of fuel that leads to better performance in this case. But setting the car to run using 99 Ron will also help improve the performance.

Cheaper fuel use lower spec components, which doesn't give the performance a higher spec component will. Saying that, because fuels are blended to a minimum spec, who says they have to use high quality components? As long as they meet the pump RON spec.
 
Off course... all makes sense!

The improved "performance" when using 99 ron on a 95 setup car I always assumed it was due not to the octane but to other better quality components on the higher grade fuel...

But I am sure any top brand best fuel should be fine for our cars as they are not race engines at all...
