Cool - 25 items now - thanks guys :).

drnutta - yup, as Marc says, the prices quoted are prior to a discount. Am hoping for at least 20% as we're going to be putting around £500 worth of business their way.

Well the Welsh distributor dude offered 20% for orders in excess of 20 items, so you'd expect PRI to offer something better in exchange for the business.

I might be looking for an extra set of sidelights when the time comes too.

It's only been a week!

We're looking at 3 weeks if you take a look at post 75.

Hey guys,

I dont post much as most things seem to get covered, but i thought some people considering this lamp change might find this info useful.

I did a lighting course at philips not so long ago and was taught about lamps and there colours and how different colours are acheived etc.

One thing we were told is that you cant actually make White Leds, sounds crazy but true, so what they do is make a blue Led and cover it in a triphosphor yellow coating to make WHITE light.

So my long-winded point is if you want white light the lamps are gonna have to be covered in a blue coating. No other way with filament lamps.

Hope this helps and didnt send anyone to sleep.

Wasn't the issue with creating white LEDs due to the fact that they only had two of the three required colours (red, blue, green) available for a long time? I remember seeing something on Tomorrow's World years ago about LEDs saying that they were waiting for the third colour to be available before they could create a "truly white" LED to replace standard household lightbulbs. They were not thinking about vehicle lighting back then.

This is a more sophisticated way to manufacture white LEDs and results in a light with a higher "quantum efficiency", however the method of coating the blue LED in a yellow phospor makes them easier to manufacture than the "multi-coloured white LED", so the phospor based LEDs are more commonly used. These phosphor based LEDs have a lower "quantum efficiency" and suffer from degradation issues that the multi-coloured white ones do not.

Yes there is TWO ways of making Leds create a white light, and in fact i did contradict myself (accidentally) by putting triphosphor which in the case is not correct, should have been yellow phosphor! So sorry for that.

But regarding This post some people seemed to be 'anti' the blue look when the lights are off, my point was simply that i dont think this can be done, mainly because of the type of lamp it is and the fact that it already creates yellow light therefore the only way to get white is to add blue.

What PIAA have done is to coat the tip of the bulb in chrome so as to minimise the amount of blue.

The image below has the PIAA Extreme White on the left and the new PIAA Chrome Mirror White bulbs on the right. As you can see the Chrome Mirror Whites are less blue in appearance.

I see that Audi are now offering an option of full LED headlights on the R8. The new headlight using a total of 54 LEDs providing a colour similar to daylight. Only one small problem, the cost - €3,590. Still I suppose if you can afford an R8 in the first place what's another few thousand Euros!

Yeah, I saw that too. I'm sure they'll trickle down through the range over the next couple of years like Xenons did.

We obviously look at a lot of the same websites.

Hopefully the price will come down a bit as well!

Yeah, according to one of the lads above it is H1 and H7. Although ETKA is showing two H7s in the cluster. Awesome list it as both being H7s too. I'm confused now. Can anybody confirm?

The H11s are only for the S-Line and S3 fogs. The standard sport\SE fogs are H7s.

I tend to agree with your Marc. Having also looked in ETKA it seems that 2007 and 2008 MY shows H7 for Standard/SE/Sport and H11 for S-Line/S3 but 2009 MY just shows the H11.

My Owner's Manual tells me every bulb type except the Fog Lights! It does say that both the Main and Dipped beam bulbs are H7s though.

Hmmm - powerbulbs.com also saying H7 for dip and main beam. Must be H7 for both then Marc :uhm:

Does the A3 use H1's?? I thought the both the dip and main beam are H7's and the older fogs H7 and the newer fogs H11.

I am 99.99999% infact 100% sure they are both H7 as I replaced mine after I bought the car with some different bulbs and I used four H7's, two for dip and two for main beam.

Had a look at the lights on my current and previous A3s this evening and both appear to have H7s for both main and dipped beam.

Any news on when these will be arriving ?

Richard

No change from my previous post (post 75).

Probably looking at around another week - at least.

I'll check in with PRI again end of next week to see if the ship is any closer to the UK.

Just noticed you'd posted Marc - I've emailed PRI this morning to find out if the bulbs are in yet - will post once I have some more news.

EDIT - just heard back - PRI will know either later today or tomorrow where the bulbs are - will let you know once I know more.

Count me in - thanks.

S3 Big Andy - if you want the indictors mate, I'd go for the Philips Silvervision which are nearly half the price of the PIAA bulbs. Order them direct here.

Charlie-don't-surf - can you check that you do need H1 as it might be that you need H7 as Marc has found when checking his bulbs.
