After looking for a few months now without really being bothered about anything and nothing really making me want to take then extra money out on top of my mortgage, this pops up...

http://www.cridfords.co.uk/

6th one down in the showroom.

Just can't justify the extra debt espacially at the moment, it's so annoying!

Stupid question but anyone else sick of this credit crunch crap?!

mmm mmm v.nice

not worth the extra debt tho fella, would rape you on petrol + tyres, let alone services

Perhaps I can enlighten you to the joys of Porsche ownership.
Take two cars...a well tweaked S3 and a standard C4S.

I had my S3 3 1/2 years from new.
I did 13500 miles in it, in that time.
In that time, with me driving and my driving style, it had wrecked 2 sets of standard front discs (one standard, one grooved), 2 sets of pads (standard and uprated) and the best of both the discs and pads of the Brembo GT Jr kit I fitted were used.
In that time it had worn out the standard 17" wheels, the remainder of a half worn set of 225/40/18 Pirreli P Zeros and a full set of 225/40/18 Avon ZZR2s (or some such thing)
It had failed it's first MOT on 1 worn out bottom ball joint and needed 3 x suspension bushes changing - all to pass it's first MOT.
Average fuel consumption was 25-27 MPG.
The clutch was iffy at best...and the gearbox 2nd to 3rd synchro was well past it's best.

I had my 996 C4S 3 1/2 years from new.
I've done 13500 miles in it, in that time.
In that time, with me driving and my driving style, it has used 1 pair of rear tyres (which to be fair, suffered 3000 miles round Europe at high speed and 18 laps of the 'ring)
Fronts are just below half down.
It's had a full set of discs and pads front and rear - pads all worn out, front discs worn out and rears half worn and corroded (the 'ring didn't help here)
It passed first MOT with no sign of any bush wear (I was laughed at when I asked if any of the bushes were worn..."Its a less than 10 year old Porsche. I don't think so" was the reply)
Average fuel consumption was 20-25 MPG.
The clutch is perfect.

Servicing costs are about the same...Audi vs Porsche.
The Porsche holds more oil...the S3 wore more stuff out.

So...you do the maths.
My C4S, even with the worse fuel economy, costs no more to run than a tweaked S3 when driven the same way, on the same roads by the same driver.
Which would I rather drive (or have parked on the driveway)?
It's not the S3.

Damian, this whole credit crunch is ********...
It only bothers people who could barely afford things in the first place.

If you can afford it, remember this:
Used cars are worth very little...you may get a good chunk off the C4S.
Nobody's buying at the moment...which makes a deal on finance likely.
You may get a great car with money off and the remainder at a decent rate, just by brass necking it.

If you want it...and can afford it...now seems like a great time to buy up expensice metal. There are deals to be had..

Don't let the running costs put you off...modern Porsches are reasonable to run, all things considered.

Glen you don't have to convince me mate, i'm dying to own that Porsche!!!

I think the main thing is the extra money i'd have to borrow to afford to buy it.

It's just the perfect car for me, C4S, black, red leather, turbo wheels, sat nav, low mileage.

Damn!!!

whats the worse that can happen........sell it on??

Damn!!!

A bit too OTT with the red leather me thinks, but each to their own.

There are some mighty fine cars on there, I want one!!!!

Man i would love to be in the position where i could even consider a Porsche !

Totally agree with the whole credit crunch thing being ********...If you have been living beyond your means and have a 100% mortgage etc, you are indeed screwed already,

if however your in two minds whether or not to get a 911, i am sure your not in this catagory, and at least you know it will hold its money should the sh*t hit the fan down the line..:icon_thumright:

Go for it dude, screw the credit crunch.....

OK OK reality check, do what you can afford, if you want it and can afford it, why stop yourself, you will only kick yourself afterwards...

People naturally assume that a 911 will be MUCH more expensive than an Audi to run...but it's not always the case.

However, I'd not risk running a 911 without an extended warranty (Porsche warranty = £895 per year) as I'd not be happy taking the £16,000 cost of a replacement engine should mine grenade.

They leak too...mine has had oil and water leaks - fortunately all covered by the warranty. Another reason to buy the extended warranty.

You could use a 911 every day...but they aren't too practical, you daren't leave it anywhere for fear of vandalism or theft and nobody will let you out of a junction. Ever. You also get used to people shaking their hand at you like they are shaking coffee beans...that's all I can think they are doing! :p

There is no doubt that if they go wrong...they cost more than Audis to repair (the S3 anyway) but they don't go wrong that often.
Consumables are sensibly priced - C4S discs (330x35mm) are cheaper than the Brembo discs from Seat.

Buy a good one, with a warranty, and look after it (hell, I drive mine hard...but warm it up well and service it properly) and you should be Ok..with it not costing any more than a tuned S3 to run.

..and the C4S to drive?
Oh lordy...it's brilliant!

Hell no!

I commute, do the shopping, and play on the track in my Boxster S and I don't have any trouble living with it day to day...

Go get one :icon_thumright:

I'll be after a C4S when the prices of the 997's drop a bit further.

I used a '77 911 as an everyday car about 4 years ago.

Cold in the winter, hot in the summer, scary in the wet, expensive fuel and servicing...

I loved it though, and christ if i put up with that every day then driving a modern one every day would be a breeze!!!

If you want it (and can afford it) go for it!!!

It would be my everyday car Glen, would you say too impractical?

I convinced myself not...but being honest, it's not an all in one car.
sure, you can use it every day...but snow and ice aren't nice...if for nothing else but the worry of the cost of repairing a clunk against the kerb.
I daren't leave mine anywhere for fear of scratches, parking dings etc.

Std ride height and spoilers maybe isn't that bad...but mine is silly low and thet front splitter makes every journey through speedbump laden towns a palnning nightmare!

There is no room...don'r listen to the Boxster owners telling you they'll be fine! There is over twice the storage space in a Boxster than a C4S!
The front 'boot' is comically small..one decent soft bag and that's it.
The C2 is better...but the 4s are blody awful.
You can't get a weeks shopping from Tescos in there.

There is space in the back with the rear seats folded down...but you have to get whatever you are carring in the back first...not easy.

Sure...you can use one every day...the heater is good, the de-misting great, the air-con great etc...grip is good, as is visibility...but it's other road users that worry me.

I paid £80k for mine...and regardless of what it's worth now, it stil cost £80k of my money...and I don't want parking dings, jealous scratches, kerbed wheels, scuffed spoilers etc. It still looks like new..I want to keep it that way...so for me, no I wouldn't use mine everyday. I could, just wouldn't.

Trips to the electrical shop, B&Q, the dump with rubbish, getting the shopping etc...all not possible in a 911.

Which is why I have a diesel Skoda to smoke about in!

DO IT! I wanted a lotus elise since they came out - the minute I hit 21 and the insurance dropped to below 3k. Bingo got me a red one. It was no 911 but at 21 what ya gonna do. Happiest 2 years of my driving life!

And I would say if you’re even looking at 911's I doubt you fall into the "I borrowed 125% of a 80k house and now I’m screwed cause the payment went up £80" category so any “credit crunch” aint going to make that big a difference to you…and you could get hit by a bus in a week

At the end of the day, only you really know your financial situation and whether or not you can really afford or justify such a purchase. If you buy sensibly then you shouldn't lose too much through depreciation, and as Ess_Three explained (Very informative post thankyou :hi:) running costs are (relatively) reasonable. For most people a car like that is only ever a pipe dream, so if you are genuinely in a position to do it then do it! You only live once, and even if you only keep it a few months, you will never regret it I'm sure.

Thanks for everyones opinions!

I'm sure everyones been in the position when they wanted something but knew it would maybe 'stretch' there funds!

Glen, have you lowered yours?!

I certainly did..
Got a decent redundancy package, plus the value of my old S3, plus as much as I could find down the back of the sofa etc...
It was still tight (with a new house looming too) but when else would I get the change to factory order a new 911?

Glen, have you lowered yours?!

I ordered the 'Lowered Sports Chassis' as an option from the factory.
Bilstein dampers, 20mm lower progressive rate springs (rumoured to be H&R), different ARBs (smaller front I think, and bigger rear) and a different set of alignment figures for the suspension.
It was a £1300ish option.

It's stiffer, sure, but absolutely perfect for sweeping A/B roads and the 'ring.
Probably too stiff for bad roads though...it would be quicker on the standard C4S stuff.

But, that option comnined with the lighter GT3 style wheels (another factory Special Order option) and the Aerokit (a standard option) make it fine car to drive.
